As of now, several studies on neuron-silicon hybrids have been evolved and shown primary success and led to a new emerging multidisciplinary field. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid neural system chip jointing rat spinal cord neurons and large-scale integrated circuits (VLSI) on a single silicon wafer substrate for fast signal recognition, where three modules are designed and interconnected. Recorded simulations show that combining the individual advantages of BNN and VLSI, the chip will have more intelligent and faster signal processing capabilities as compared with traditional ANN method, especially for fuzzy signals. Moreover, it can also resolve the problems of huge memory space in ANN chips and the high complexity for algorithms","PeriodicalId":113815,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings. 2nd International IEEE EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering, 2005.","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132293969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These include a biologically constrained neuronal model, chemical micro-sensor array and associated interface circuitry. We present a spiking olfactory bulb model, a reduced 70 element broadly-tuned chemosensor array (25 different chemsensor tunings), alongside details of their silicon implementation. Our results show that the olfactory bulb model is capable of pattern classification and that the odour delivery, uptake and sensor circuitry, as well as the fundamental units of the neuromorphic model (spike-driven synapse and spiking soma), are all functional. In this study, we try to identify neural correlates of cortico-cortical top-down projections based on the Jastreboff tinnitus model combined with the adaptive resonance theory of Grossberg which has not been applied to the problem of tinnitus so far. In particular, the neural synchronization stability. In single sweep sequences of late auditory evoked potentials is evaluated by the wavelet phase coherence in the time-scale domain. The synchronization stability, which is according to the underlying model linked to the focus of attention on the tinnitus signal, discriminated between a group of compensated and decompensated tinnitus patients. It is concluded that top-down processes according to the adaptive resonance theory basically represent the influences of the limbic and autonomic nervous system in the Jastreboff tinnitus model. The neural correlates of these processes are globally reflected in the synchronization stability of late auditory evoked potentials and may be useful as objective tinnitus decompensation measure","PeriodicalId":113815,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings. 2nd International IEEE EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering, 2005.","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115656662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Noise in the EEG signals makes difficult the formation of a precise diagnosis concerning the existence of cerebral activity in patients who are considered to be in potential cerebral death. In an attempt to guarantee the quality of the diagnosis of ECS, a study was performed at a public hospital in Brazil applying the health care failure and effect analysis (HFMEA) technique. Through this study, problems that interfere with the quality of the EEG exam were identified and subsequently certain actions were proposed to help reduce the risks of these potential problems. These actions certify the functioning of the EEG equipment within the formal standards of safety and quality","PeriodicalId":113815,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings. 2nd International IEEE EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering, 2005.","volume":"1106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116054232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The amount of coherence between coactive motor units was investigated as the frequency and amplitude of common oscillatory inputs to the motoneuron pool were varied. Coherence between simulated motor units was evident at the frequency of the applied common input signal. The frequency range over which significant coherence was observed increased with increasing bandwidth of the common input signal. The magnitude of the coherence increased both with increasing amplitude of the common input and as the ratio of common fluctuations to independent membrane noise increased","PeriodicalId":113815,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings. 2nd International IEEE EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering, 2005.","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125056055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Detecting, sorting and encoding spike data at the front-end will reduce the data bandwidth and enable wireless communication. Without such data reduction, large data volumes need to be transferred to a host computer and typically heavy cables are required which constrain the patient or test animal. Front-end processing circuits must dissipate only a limited amount of power, due to supply constraints and heat restrictions. Two reduced complexity spike sorting algorithms are introduced, one based on integral transform and another on segmented PCA. The former achieves 98% of the precision of a PCA sorter, while requiring only 2.5% of the computational complexity. The latter algorithm is somewhat more accurate but incurs a higher complexity","PeriodicalId":113815,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings. 2nd International IEEE EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering, 2005.","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125087799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three-dimensional lower extremity joint motion and surface electromyographic (EMG) data from the lower extremity muscles were collected before and after a 20-week gait training protocol with surface stimulation of the left dorsiflexors. Results of this preliminary investigation demonstrated carry-over effects of ES on joint coordination and muscle activity, with patterns approaching those of children with typical development (TD). Further, the use of ES appeared to affect the antagonistic muscle to which the ES was applied, which may have important implications for future training programs with ES","PeriodicalId":113815,"journal":{"name":"Conference Proceedings. 2nd International IEEE EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering, 2005.","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123051401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
