The digital tool provides a comprehensive digital basis for construction that, since the beginning of building industrialization, has been an illusion rather than a reality. Beyond catching up on technology, the digital fabrication tool hereby provokes fundamental changes in the architectural discipline: the mere relation of the digital reality of computers with the physical reality of architecture. As opposed to the experiments in the early days of digitization, the focus is no longer on form, rather it is on the physical improvement of the discipline. This paper therefore presents a review of contemporary attempts within the time frame of the past four years with a thorough analysis and breakdown of the prototypes. In comparison to these examples, and considering the same building materials, another case studies are explored as precedents in history that have challenged the traditional understanding of the production of architectural forms. The understanding of the essential factors that constitute the advanced design process is consequently put into discussion. The relations between these factors and their direct effect over the architectural process has changed with the digitizing processes. This is also discussed and analyzed in regards to the implications and possibilities emerging for an indefinite relation between the tool and the design. The paper suggests a new medium linking the virtual and built environments and highlights the limitations of these new trends.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116563932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sustainability is a paradigm that contains environmental, economic and social factors. Many governments have adopted the sustainability paradigm especially in the MENA region as they are the most affected by global warming. In Egypt, within the government role in paving the way to sustainability; principles of sustainable development has been integrated into the country's policies and programs in reflection to sustainable development strategy of Egypt's vision 2030. However, the concept of sustainability is still considered as a facultative matter that has to be included in architectural education in public universities in Egypt. To test this hypothesis, it requires tracing the sustainability paradigm in architectural educational programs offered in Egypt with special mention to Cairo University. An investigation of the selected architectural programs will be conducted using the selected programs' official literature review and analyzing the development of courses' data, vision, mission, philosophy, objectives and outcomes aiming at evaluating the current situation of sustainability integration in architectural programs and providing a state of art of architectural education in Egypt.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122282184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Architectural education did not change over the last 20 years; this is considered to be one of the biggest weaknesses. School of architecture now a days suffer to meet the transforming architectural practice, more over students are not educated to meet the market demand. The gap between the architectural education and the architectural practice is increasing each day due to the rapid change in technologies and market demand, more over architectural school still has traditional design studio, where students do not practice architecture. This paper aims to prove that linking the architectural education with real projects during the undergrad time, improves the students architectural practices after graduating describing an innovative and very successful final year project course that has been provided several architectural schools.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125440083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper focuses on a parametric model, which has its foundation in contemporary society of information systems. This process gives structure to the decision making which then allows the creative stage of the project to occur. The process of architectural concept is subject of many studies in the field of science of drawing, or in cognitive science or informatics. Its wealth is based on its complexity and the variety of operating conditions that include during its progress. For our purposes, we will focus on the early stages of the project, the moments of conceptual research from which will flow throughout the design approach. This step is the founder of the architectural concept activity is largely associated with the creative dimension. We propose that this model will validate reconstructing the concrete steps of morphogenesis of reference objects. Then we will use the parametric model in a dedicated tool for architectural design. Our choice fell on this issue because the interactivity between the parts is a catalyst for a series of elements that helps the design process by raising the quality and operational modalities of this, creating a real \"new aesthetic\".","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"10 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128744270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The teaching and learning methods used for decades in Architectural learning process should be reviewed taking into account habits of learning and the existing challenges provided by contemporary information technologies for a new generation of students. This paper introduces a pilot study based on using Augmented Reality (AR) as a new tool in architectural learning process. AR is an emerging technology which enables participants to interact with digital information embedded within the physical environment. Egyptian educational architectural institutions today are largely unaware of new concepts such as Augmented Reality opportunities for architectural practice, and the prototypes that are being developed by researchers worldwide. The paper goal is to present how it is very helpful to use such new advanced technology in architectural learning process. Testing its possibilities for graphical and spatial capabilities and recognition improvements for the first year architectural students in the Building Construction course, at the Department of Architecture, Menoufia University, Egypt. The case study was applied at the first semester of the academic year of 2015-2016.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115605413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students, as a new generation, have evolving skills in dealing with digital technologies, having begun the process in their childhood; therefore, they cannot be educated via conventional methods. This study introduces digital gaming in education as a new, futuristic learning technique to be used in architectural education to attract students to learn, based on the common ground between the processes of designing and playing games, from exploring possibilities under certain constraints to emphasizing decision-making and activity-based collaborations. The research has originated from the lack of studies regarding this subject, especially in the architectural field, aiming to introduce a theoretical approach to investigating the use of digital game-based learning (DGBL) in architectural education as an integration between real and virtual educational environments particularly through the virtual worlds based on the ’Second Life’-digital platform. This study is significant in terms of making design learning fun and constructive, reaching new possibilities in architectural design.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122668268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The learning objectives of advanced design studio include pragmatic thinking through testing new hypotheses, evaluating and applying different parameters, and identifying appropriate decisions. These are only achieved once barriers between design studio and building sciences considerations are overcome by addressing the process of simulation across the domains and levels of the revised Bloom's taxonomy. The Design Studio and building sciences have traditionally been viewed as independent disciplines due to the lack of an integrated framework to connect them. This formulates a sound basis on which to explore the utilization of revised Bloom's taxonomy levels, adapted through the use of the process of digital simulation in design studio as a decision-supporting tool. This paper aims to design a path for the integrating building performance simulation through upgrading the framework of Bloom's taxonomy. To achieve this, the paper adopts qualitative exploratory approach of integrating building simulation software and its application in an Environmental design studio. The importance of the proposed framework is determined through measuring the attainment attributes. The results show that using this methodology in the design studio highlights the gaps in the learning process that students are facing in conventional architectural education.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129513714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although they are already in existence, this paper aims to demonstrate the need to use more compact courses within the architecture curriculum, particularly simulating tools that either measure the current performance of a design or forecast its degree of success in order to cope with environmental needs (indoor and outdoor), accessibility, visual needs, technological variations and other related issues. The advanced digital technologies currently employed almost universally in architectural education generate increasingly virtual and augmented design, resulting from processes that tend to be devoid of imagination of the body. The case studies discussed in this paper involved students’ direct participation in performative acts during the design process, facilitating positive transformative learning through direct experience. These include design briefs for Chelsea College of Arts (London, UK, 2009–2013), modules for the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) (London, UK, 2009-2014), leading to the project ‘Tales from the Woods’ (2014) that transformed august Georgian buildings into an immersive theatre for the occasion of AA’s 167th anniversary; conceived, designed, planned, constructed and performed by the student project team through a process of intensive choreographic workshops. Working with performance inherently provokes layers of architectural design concerns; such as notion of time and narrative; spatial relationships between the bodies, objects, space, and site; movement, occupation and inhabitation; collaboration and logistics; representation and documentation; and communication of the vision in order to create audience experience. The process encourages each student to generate critical and coherent views of the world that they are proposing, while motivating active commitment and solid ownership of the project. This performance methodology in architectural education promotes transformative learning by going through a journey where rational and analytical reflections, as well as emotional intelligence are challenged and nurtured.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130042560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This mutual sway evolves wherever interferences in the built environment are thought-out and can be strengthened or weakened by the many ways in which the practice of architecture can be undertaken. The more familiar we are about the concerns and factors that control what can be made, the greater the opportunities to propose and make appropriate architectures. Apparently, the criteria in any qualification policy should permit flexibility of approach and will – for reasons including cultural choice, political issues, and son on – vary significantly from country to country. However the weighting of the various criteria have to ensure adequate standards both in educational system as in the professional training. This paper develops, deepens and questions about the regulatory entry routes to the professional practice of architecture in the Arab world. It is also intended to provide an informed basis about strategies for conventional and unconventional models of practice in preparation for the next stages of architect’s work experience and professional experience. With the objective of promoting the implementation of adequate built environment in the practice of architecture, a comprehensive analysis of various pathways of access to the profession are selected as case studies, encompassing examples from across the world. The review of such case studies allows the creation of a comprehensive picture in relation to the conditions for qualification of practitioners of the built environment at the level of the Middle Eastern countries and the Arab World.
