In order to stabilize all the SSR modes, a unified approach based on modal control theory is proposed to design a damping controller which is a dynamic output feedback compensator using generator shaft speed deviation as a feedback signal. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme, a frequency-domain approach based on eigenvalue analyses and time-domain approach based on nonlinear model simulations are performed. The simulation results show that the proposed modal-control NGH SSR damping scheme can effectively suppress torsional oscillations in the studied system.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93. The influence of bus loads on power system transient stability is one of the main concerns by operators. This problem is studied and a simple method for studying the influence of bus loads on transient stability is presented in this paper. It can avoid recomputing the new power flow and reforming the reduced admittance matrices. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis can be used to speed up transient stability assessment. Some simulation results and comparisons are given.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93. Discussions are given on the effects of the specific combination of system parameters to make the resonance curve triple-valued and on the identified bifurcation set which can be used to assess the power system stability.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93. However, because of the inadequate processing speed and insufficient memory capacity, there has been little work done on full text retrieval systems in the past. With the emergence of very large capacity compact disk ROM (CD ROM), research in full-text retrieval systems is becoming increasingly important. Practical systems based on Boolean retrieval models have appeared. However, in spite of its ability to process structured queries, the Boolean model has been criticised for its inability to provide ranked output as all retrieved documents are considered equally important. Probabilistic models have been proposed by some scholars to solve this problem and have successfully been implemented on a small scale trial basis in indexing retrieval systems. This paper focuses on applying the probabilistic model into the full-text retrieval system.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93. The design procedure of a robust control system is essentially a procedure of minimizing that H/sub /spl infin// norm index. This paper proves that the normality of certain transfer function matrices of a control system is a sufficient condition for minimum H/sub /spl infin// index. Moreover, for the 2-input 2-output case, it is not only sufficient, but also necessary. Thus, the normalization of certain transfer function matrices of a system guarantees the best system robustness property in the sense of minimum H/sub /spl infin// index. This serves as the basis of a new approach to robust control system design-the \"optimization of parametrized normal matrix (OPNORM)\" method. It is also shown here that the weighting function in the H/sub /spl infin// norm index has certain interesting significance in the design of open-loop system eigenloci.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93. This paper presents a new spectral-subtraction-based speech enhancement algorithm which exploits the correlation property of speech signal, the masking characteristic of the human ear, the speech redundancy property, and the frame-to-frame randomness of the noise that is present in the signal for the enhancement. Informal listening tests show that the proposed algorithm greatly improved the quality of the noisy speech even when the speech signal is corrupted by high acoustic noise. As the algorithm has low complexity and uses only a single input, it is well suited to a wide range of speech processing applications.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93.
