The cyclic code with majority-logic decoding is used in a cascaded way as an inner code to create a simple and powerful hybrid-ARQ error control scheme. Inner code is used only for error correction and the outer code is used for both error correction and error detection. When an error is detected, retransmission is required. The unsuccessful packets are not discarded as with conventional schemes, but are combined with their retransmitted copies. Approximations for the throughput efficiency and the undetectable error probability are given. A high reliability coupled with a simple high-speed implementation makes it suitable for high data rate error control over both stationary and non-stationary channels. Adaptive error control scheme becomes the best solution for time-varying channels when the optimum code is selected according to the actual channel conditions to enhance the system performance. The main feature of this system is that the basic structure of the encoder and decoder need not be modified while the error-correction capability of the code increases. Results of a comparative analysis show that the proposed scheme outperforms other similar ARQ protocols.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93. By so doing, a learning search algorithm can, after sufficient number of problem-solving, construct a heuristic estimate function h(.) which uniformly approximates to the optimal estimate function h*(.) by arbitrary precision. One of these learning search algorithms, A-B/sub n/, is described and it is shown that, when the number of the previous problem-solving becomes large enough, the worst-case complexity of A-B/sub n/ can be reduced to O(poly(N)), where N is the length of the optimal solution path, poly(N) is a polynomial function of N.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93. Due to the open door policy in China, managers are now aware of the significance of implementing the ISO 9000 quality assurance system in their companies or factories. However, the ISO 9000 quality system is new to a lot of people, so in order to train personnel to have a quick and thorough understanding of the ISO 9000 quality system standard, an expert system is often used. An ISO 9000 expert system is presented which is written in Prolog. It is rule-based and backward chained. The knowledge of this expert system came from a consultant in this domain. The system gives the user the percentage of conformance to a particular statement in the ISO 9001 standard and delivers a quality manual which the user can use to implement the ISO quality system.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93. With multiprocessor machines, many sophisticated operations on image data can be accomplished within reasonable time constraints. In order to efficiently utilize multiprocessor machines, conventional image processing algorithms have to be parallelised. The design of parallel algorithms takes into account many considerations, e.g. interprocessor communication, load balancing, task division, task placement, scalability, network topology, etc. In this paper, the performance of some image processing algorithms running on a loosely-coupled multiprocessor machine is evaluated. The machine consists of a PC host computer and a multiprocessor network consisting of a number of transputers. The configuration of this transputer network is under software control and so different parallelisations of a particular algorithm can be tested on a particular network topology. Three image processing algorithms were selected for parallelisation. They are the Sobel edge operation, the fast Fourier transform and the Hough transform. Parallelism is achieved in various approaches, such as partitioning of tasks or partitioning of data. For a particular network configuration, the performance of different parallelisation approaches for each algorithm was assessed, based on the parallel processing time, overhead time, communication-to-computation ratio, efficiency, etc.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93. A new CFAR detection algorithm of multithreshold in which three tentative estimates of the noise level in the test cell are obtained by independently processing output of the leading and the lagging cells is proposed and studied. The performance of multi-threshold CFAR detector is analyzed in both a benign environment and in an environment of an arbitrary number of interferers in the sample set. A Rayleigh fluctuation target mode (Swerling Case I) is used as a model for the received signal. The results have been applied in Radar Station. The practical testing results show that the multi-thresholds detector has good performance.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":110496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of TENCON '93.
