In an international context, the regulation and determination of organisational practice flows both ways, that is to say from headquarters to the local business units and vice versa, creating a so-called ‘paradoxical’ tension of competing forces. Multinationals are the ‘receivers’ as well as the ‘promoters’ of these paradoxical movements of convergence and divergence in management practice. Staff at headquarters are under pressure to take into consideration the norms and rules of their specific cultural context. The example of the Thai subsidiary of a German engineering company is used as a case study to illustrate the paradoxical tensions and dilemmas which arise when gender and diversity issues are managed in two very different cultural contexts.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126550488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results show that both a brand effect and quality management effect can promote consumers to spend more money buying accredited indigenous handicrafts. In the future a reduction of customer transaction costs and an increase of consumers’ trust can be expected. This implies that the implementation of the “Certification System for Taiwan Indigenous Cultural Industry” by the Government of Taiwan will help increase consumers’ recognition of Taiwan indigenous handicrafts. It also implies that the effect of a difference in the price of handicrafts will benefit craftmakers and any technology associated with the certification system. In addition, implementing such a system will contribute to enhanced social security, protection of cultural heritage and promotion of national development.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132937454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We particularly intend to examine how the management of national diversity comprises a means for shaping the perception of collective identities and regulating the organisational behaviours of minority groups. For this purpose, a case study of a large Italian-French company is discussed: the analysis is based on a qualitative investigation conducted in terms of grounded theory. We further show how such managerial language and practices model and form individual and collective identity, reinforcing the establishment of precise criteria of inclusion and exclusion from the organisational life. The dominating group tries to affect the sense of group identity/diversity in order to establish models of action with a view to maintaining the status quo. In this respect the discourse and praxis of diversity management are seen as a mechanism of catalysis acting on national differences serving to reinforce the collective identity building processes and enhance the existing power relations.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116311993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The multi country manpower metrics are influencing the variables of the existing models and also introducing new facets. Level of comfort with foreign cultures (CFC) is a new framework which attempts to read the comfort level of local employees of the country with respect to foreigners and vice versa. This paper attempts to profile the level of comfort of local employees with foreign employees in culturally diverse work places of multinational firms. This study is based on samples from ten countries using comfort with foreign cultures (CFC) questionnaire. The results indicate the nature and level of differences among nations/regions on the comfort level of local employees with foreign employees and they vary. This study also pinpoints specific differences among nations in this respect.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127216085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The global, deindustrialised service economy raises the cultural politics of the landscape, including heritage governance issues relative to spatial theory. The case analysis unpacks the convergence-divergence dilemma, particularly, how the Guggenheim master-brand transfer simultaneously changed the political dynamics and corroded Bilbao’s sense of place. It contributes to our understanding how a cultural hybridisation approach can help to reinterpret the ‘integration- diversity’ dichotomy embedded in iconic branding, particularly its impacts on urban socio-cultural, economic and political institutions.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121247048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multiple inputs must be taken into account, among others specific ‘emic’ knowledge of cultures. Traditional value dimension models also systematically overlook power relationships. To explore this we use a critical approach to culture with special focus on semiotics, seen as a means of interpreting power and status relationships in society through the meanings of signs. Meaning is constructed, dynamic and constantly under review (Magala, 2009) in light of one’s strategic purpose in transactions. As teachers, we use cases mediated by academic, critical and pragmatic analysis to help students gain a rich understanding of multi-cultural business realities. We also make it clear that ‘neutrality’ may not be as neutral as it seems: teachers may have to take sides on cultural and ethical issues.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127681714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a rule, these maps are drawn on the basis of results of paper-and-pencil studies: values, beliefs, and other self-reports. Our map represents an innovation as it is based not only on paper-and-pencil studies but mostly on national statistics reflecting important behavioural variables, such as murder rates, adolescent fertility, road death tolls, transparency versus corruption, and more. The map evidences two dimensions that reflect national culture and create clear geographic clusters. This demonstrates that national statistics can represent meaningful cultural indicators similar to those from paper-and-pencil studies and creating interpretable country maps.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126858785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, we explore the role that the procedural justice theory concept of voice plays for cognitive and affective conflict perceptions of Austrian and Slovenian managers during a strategic decision-making process following an economic crisis. The results of the study suggest that the extent to which TMT members perceive to have a lack of voice in strategic decision-making processes can affect perceived levels of team conflict. Lower conflict levels were reported when (a) decisions were made in groups rather than by one individual decider; (b) there was less informal behaviour during the decision-making process; and (c) when members were following the organisation’s rather than their individual interests. No significant cross-cultural variations could be determined for these tendencies.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123789942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The discussion is based on empirical studies undertaken over a period of five years in a particular cultural field, namely Upper Egypt. Using the example of a national NGO, the authors show how changes in the societal environment force organisations to adapt and redefine their self-understanding and internal value structures. The social theory of Bourdieu (1982, 1983) supplies the theoretical background to our discussion, highlighting the importance of economic, cultural and social capital to the ‘social field’ in which an NGO acts. Furthermore, this theoretical frame can help to illuminate the role of NGOs as representatives of a social class that mobilise social groups for sustainable achievements, while at the same time being forced to adapt to cultural changes in the field in order to maintain their status and functionality as representative institutions. The paper is intended to contribute to the understanding of the highly obscure management situation regarding value shifts and, in particular, to further scholarly work on the dynamics of organisational learning.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130440440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The overall conclusion is that Greek management is influenced by both the European/global business environment and the national/local distinctive characteristics and societal values. Based on the existing literature, it was found that until the end of 2000s, Greek and Western management co-existed in a delicate balance. What remains to be seen are the devastating results of the prolonged economic crisis that has affected not only Greece, but all Southern European countries. The balance is now disturbed and we are only at the beginning of our understanding of this new reality, not only in management and the workplace but in also in our everyday lives.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121770615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
