This contribution seeks to elaborate some of the observations and key terms in order to illustrate their potential as analytical tools, in particular the terms 'agency' and 'ventriloquism'. To unfold some of the counter-mechanisms, the contribution will use examples from the discourse that emerge from what has been referred to as the 'white saviour complex'.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124928943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We employed an approach of distinguishing three trust objects, namely, trust in peers, trust in the supervisor, and trust in top management. Survey data on interpersonal trust, affective commitment (AC), intention to turnover (ITT), job satisfaction (JS) and job performance (JP) was collected from professionals working in Turkey (N = 134) and the USA (N = 150). Data were analysed using partial least square based structural equation modelling. Findings in general suggested a normative point of view of trust, and discussions from comparative cultural contexts were given. Evidence shows that AC was positively associated with trust in peers and trust in top management in both countries. JS was explained by trust in supervisors in the US sample, whereas trust in top management predicted JS in the Turkey sample. ITT, due to its economic-grained nature, did not associate with any of the trust variables, implying the distinction between social exchange and economic exchange. JP and trust were inversely associated in the samples from both countries, revealing a team effect and contradicting the initial hypothesis. Practical implications were discussed.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131625819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We show that the three bipolar traits of a cultural agency personality (cognitive orientation; figurative orientation and operative orientation) result in eight extremal and contrasting types. The three traits of mindset agency theory are independently created from, but their meaning is closely related to, the bipolar traits of the Sagiv-Schwartz value universe. This can be used to give an empirical meaning to the eight types. Applying this to sociopolitical contexts, this enables one to characterise the flows of predominant streams of political thought in societies and organisations.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116051498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The findings show that almost half of the students score substantially different on intercultural competence after their stay abroad than before. However, this applies to both intervention and non-intervention groups. Moreover, the changes are both positive and negative. Positive developmental scores relate to high scores on four specific competences, and to the factors curiosity, care for cultural difference, time lived abroad, age and gender. Factor analysis of all 13 study variables supports the idea that an intrinsic desire for cross-cultural interaction and an ability to communicate sensitively moderate intercultural learning. Further study is required to test how these factors relate to effective intervention.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126698046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was administered on 300 middle level managers who were representatives of five different private sector banks in Delhi/NCR. Variables in the study were assessed using three validated instruments. Descriptive statistics, Pearson product moment correlation and hierarchical regression were used for data analysis. The results of the study confirmed that mentoring moderates the relationship between managerial effectiveness and employee engagement. Work engagement is an imperative barometer of occupational well-being of both employees and the organisations. Organisations need to increase the percentage of their engaged managers, until they do it they have little hope of increasing engaged workforce. Organisations can make learning and development a priority for creating engaged managers. Understanding of the relationship between these variables will help private banking sector in specific and banking sector in general about the role of mentoring in enhancing managerial effectiveness and thereby increasing the manager's engagement.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127101942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, a multi-case study approach with qualitative data from four hospitals running lean projects was adopted, exploring, through cross-case analysis, what were the enablers and failure motives. A path for a lean culture construction, from practice repetition changing behaviour to change thinking, is presented. The propositions formulated provide a research agenda for future studies. Also, a lean maturity model for healthcare organisations is presented as a starting point for developing a healthcare lean assessment (HLA) instrument. This paper contributes to the recent research stream on cultural aspects of lean, in a culturally rich service setting, healthcare. It brings some new insights to organisational culture change theory in context of lean deployment and provides a framework for understanding lean maturity stages. This paper explores both the hard and the soft side in healthcare settings, absent from many of lean literature. Addressing the healthcare organisational culture change under national culture awareness, it brings a new approach to lean deployment assessment in healthcare settings.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116645615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our analyses rely on GLOBE's dimensions. Considering the influence of both values (should be scores) and practices (as is scores), we identify the inclination towards cultural change of a specific country as the difference between its 'should be' and 'as is' scores of each cultural dimension. Our goal is to find out whether the inclination towards cultural change affects entrepreneurship. The statistical analysis shows that the inclination toward cultural change affects entrepreneurship. Moreover, we find different results in term of statistical significance for different cultural dimensions. Our research sheds new light on the literature on cultural entrepreneurship. Most of the literature analyses the linkage between cultural values and entrepreneurship, and only a few studies refer to cultural practices and on their influence on entrepreneurial orientation.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128984375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Maslach Burnout Inventory was used for measuring burnout levels - emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and personal accomplishment - of physicians. All available 510 resident physicians were surveyed in this study. Approximately, 53% of the participants responded to all of the questions in this instrument. Our findings indicate that burnout levels of resident physicians vary significantly based on medical specialties of the participants. Emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation are significant repressors for personal accomplishment. Implications of occupational burnout on organisational culture are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128174825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although many authors emphasise cultural change as a prerequisite for successful lean transformation in all sectors, there has been little effort to develop a tool that measures actual organisational culture relative to the 'ideal' culture for supporting lean management. In this paper, we describe the development of a new measurement tool that aims to assess the lean features of organisational culture. A new questionnaire was used to conduct the research at an outpatient clinic. The results suggest that further refinement of the questionnaire, namely changes in wording and addition of explanatory examples, is required. If validated, the modified questionnaire could be useful in organisations in which members have basic knowledge of lean management tools and principles.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130510259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the lack of managerial methodologies and knowledge sharing regarding best practices has limited the positive effects from new research and limited achievements. The lean approach can change healthcare organisations that adopt continuous improvement logics and can create substantial business results. This paper focuses on the development and application of lean principles in an oncology unit to increase the service performance levels while following and reducing waste, time, and non-value added activities. The study aims at improving healthcare processes within an oncology department, dealing with four types of cancer: breast, lung, head and neck, and gastric. The five principles of lean thinking were applied to identify the value from a patient's perspective and to follow the value stream. To achieve these ambitious goals, both basic lean tools and advanced techniques were implemented.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"86 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116307472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
