The synthesis process is straightforward and environmentally friendly. The nanostructures are characterized by SEM, XRD, FAAS, and UV/Vis spectroscopy for the photocatalytic properties. The X-ray diffraction pattern demonstrated the phase of the anatase TiO2 structure. Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry is used as a simple way to determine the Ag+ content in solutions from the heterogeneous photocatalysis under UV illumination. The research shows that at the end of the degradation process, no silver ions are observed for both dyes – malachite green and methylene blue. The formation of stable intermediates by the reaction of OH with the triarylmethane dye during the photocatalysis resulted in faster degradation of malachite green than methylene blue. In comparison to pure TiO2, the TiO2/Ag films have higher photocatalytic efficiency. The reason is the presence of silver, which leads to a decrease in the recombination of pairs of charges.","PeriodicalId":104760,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140487984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients were divided into two groups – those undergoing treatment with MTX monotherapy and putative optimal response ($$n = 28$$), and those with poor response to therapy with MTX and therefore shifted to treatment with MTX and a biological agent ($$n = 35$$). DNA for SNP analysis was automatically isolated from whole blood through chemagic Magnetic Separation Module I instrument (PerkinElmer chemagen Technologie GmbH, Baesweiler, Germany). The following SNPs in MTHFR gene – 677C>T (rs1801133) and 1298A>C (rs1801131) – were analyzed using High Resolution Melt (HRM) analysis. A real-time PCR (RotorGene 6000, Qiagen, USA) was performed for amplification of DNA prior to HRM analysis.\u0000We did not find any significant difference in the distribution of genotype ($$chi2 = 1.04$$;  df $$= 2/chi2 = 0.60$$; df = 2) and allele ($$chi2 = 0.11$$; df = $$1/chi 2 = 0.03$$; df = 1) frequencies of polymorphisms C677T and A1298C between the two groups. Adverse events (nausea, dizziness, headache, hepatotoxicity) due to MTX were noted among four of the patients. It has many pharmacological properties, including neuroprotective, antioxidative, hepatoprotective, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the ethanolic extract of Ziziphus (EEZ) fruit and its wound-healing effect. The anti-inflammatory activity of EEZ was assessed in vivo by carrageenan-induced paw edema test. NIH-3T3 mouse embryonic fibroblast cells were used to evaluate the wound healing effect of EEZ. The effect of the extract on wound-healing was examined by in vitro scratch test. Also, the level of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the serum of rats was determined using the CRP latex test kit. The ethanol extract of jujube fruit induced wound closure in NIH-3T3 fibroblast cells for 18 h (88.5%) at 1 μumu g/mL concentration. Also, EEZ significantly inhibited carrageenan-induced edema in rat paws. However, a statistically significant decrease in CRP levels was observed in rats pre-treated with EEZ. As a result, Z. jujuba fruit extract had anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects, which might be strongly related to its phytochemical composition.","PeriodicalId":104760,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140487684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and spectral analysis. The results showed that Ho$$^{3+}$$/Tm$$^{3+}$$/Yb$$^{3+}$$-doped NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ has tetragonal phase structures, and doping with rare-earth ions decreases the cell parameters of NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$. NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$:Ho$$^{3}$$/Tm$$^{3+}$$/Yb$$^{3+}$$ generates blue, green, and red lights at 477, 545, and 659 nm, respectively, under an excitation of 980 nm. The emission of these three lights is called a three-photon process. As the doping ratio of Yb$$^{3+}$$ increases, the colour coordinates of samples gradually approach the white region from the red region, enabling NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$:0.1Ho/1Tm/20Yb to exhibit white emission. Doping with Yb$$^{3 + }$$ increases the energy transfer and quantum efficiencies of NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$. When the concentration of Yb$$^{3+}$$ reached 30%, the quantum efficiency of NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ reached the maximum value of 188.37%. Overall, NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$:Ho/Tm/Yb has broad application prospects in the field of white lighting.","PeriodicalId":104760,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences","volume":"100 1-2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140490280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was focused on an assessment of 135 complete humeri from 47 females and 88 males. The surface of olecranon fossa was captured in a 3D image, using a Hand-held Laser Scanner (FastSCAN). The result was a 3D shape comprising two tetrahedrons with a common apex and a common lateral face. This 3D model was determined by five landmarks: the most superior point of the olecranon fossa, the most lateral point of the olecranon fossa seen on the posterior surface, the most medial point of the olecranon fossa, the point on the inferior edge of the olecranon fossa, directly in the middle, and the deepest point into the fossa. Therefore, the volume of the virtual model was equal to the total of the volumes of these two tetrahedrons. The results were processed with SPSS 17.0 using Discriminant Function Analysis. The percentage of cases classified correctly is 92.5% according to the sex determination. This study demonstrates a 3D method which can be used successfully for sex determination, especially in case of highly fragmented bones that impede traditional anthropometric analyses.","PeriodicalId":104760,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences","volume":"29 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138949736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Samples of breast and thighs were divided in three groups – control (C), and treated with infusion of wild basil (T1) or oregano (T2). The meat was stored at 4 °C for 7 days and then at –20 °C up to day 90. The pH, colour, oxymyoglobin (OMb) and metmyoglobin (MetMb) were measured at 0 d, 7 d and 90 d. The antioxidant treatment affected the colour parameters of the chicken meat, as the effect differed according to the muscles and duration of storage. Contrary to breast that exhibited initially decreased yellowness (b*), in T1, the antioxidant treated thigh meat had increased lightness (L*) at 7 d and 90 d, increased b* at 0 d and decreased redness (a*) at 7 d. Duration of storage affected both breast and thigh meat colour, more visible in T1 and T2. Considerable increase in b* was observed in breast, while in thigh meat storage was associated with higher L* and lower a*. Both breast and thigh of the treated groups showed decrease in pH, particularly in the initial stages of storage. The percentage of OMb and MetMb in meat was less affected by the antioxidants. Their effect was stronger in breast, with lower OMb in T1 at the 90th day of storage. Furthermore, this group exhibited dramatic decrease in the OMb in the course of storage. MetMb increased in C and T1 during the storage period. The changes in the myoglobin redox forms in thigh meat are mainly due to storage and are similar to those observed in breast.","PeriodicalId":104760,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences","volume":"58 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138951106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It interacts strongly with cell membranes and plays a protective role in several diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Hence, studies on the interaction of melatonin with lipid bilayer membranes have gained importance. In this regard, the present study aims to analyze the influence of different concentrations (0 to 15 mol%) of melatonin on the thermal and structural properties of zwitterionic stearoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (SOPC) lipid bilayer model systems by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DSC results have shown that melatonin interacts with the membrane in a concentration-dependent fashion, induces patch formation, and alters the phase behaviour by reducing the main phase transition temperature. FTIR data has shown that increasing the melatonin concentration caused a reduction in the wavenumber of C=O and PO$$_{2}^-$$ antisymmetric stretching vibrations corresponding to the ester carbonyl and phosphate groups of SOPC lipids. This indicates the possibility of strong hydrogen bonding of melatonin with the SOPC lipids and nearby water molecules in the environment, suggesting its preferential location near lipid heads at the interfacial region. These results help to understand the organization and interactions of melatonin with membranes and provide insights to develop safe melatonin-based formulations for pharmaceutical applications.","PeriodicalId":104760,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences","volume":"55 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138949745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this retrospective and cross-sectional study, menstruating female patients who applied to the iron deficiency outpatient clinic between April and September 2021 were analyzed. Scores on the picture bleeding assessment chart (PBAC) and complaints of heavy menstrual bleeding were recorded. The chi-square test and confusion matrix were conducted. There were 157 patients in the sample. There were 82 patients who said they did not have heavy menstrual bleeding, while 75 patients said they did ($$chi^2(1)=19.7$$, $$p<0.001$$). Sixty percent of patients who did not report significant bleeding had a PBAC score greater than 100, with a median score of 184. The Chi-square test revealed a significant difference between complaints of heavy menstrual bleeding (yes/no) and PBAC (normal/high). The negative predictive value was calculated to be 40.2, while the false miss rate was 59.8%. Six out of ten patients who are investigated for iron deficiency and whose primary cause is heavy menstrual bleeding may be overlooked by this query. In such etiologic investigations, much more objective methodologies, such as PBAC, should be applied.","PeriodicalId":104760,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences","volume":"39 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138950152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the present investigation is to illustrate a methodology for determining the values of the minimum virtual height (h’F) of the ionospheric F-region. The dependence of the entire ionosphere on the level of solar activity is one of the main factors in the empirical modelling of the ionosphere. Correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between the quantities. The results show a significant correlation, confirming the well-known relationship between solar activity and its impact on the ionosphere. In order to analyze the most appropriate dependence between the solar activity represented by F107 and h’F, a regression analysis was performed by month. The results show that the optimal dependence is close to linear. As a result, an empirical median model for forecasting h’F for the territory of Sofia city, depending on solar activity and season, is proposed. In its concluding part, this study also presents examples of the model's performance in selected months. The resulting errors are ME=0.000 km and RMS=8.180 km, respectively, which is accurate enough for practical purposes.","PeriodicalId":104760,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences","volume":"68 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138950487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though WSNs have numerous advantages, their usage is reduced by node's lifetime and data loss. The aforementioned problems in WSNs were overcome by using energy efficient protocols by various researchers. But most of the authors focused on either trust model or energy efficient model, or analyzed both models using separate algorithms. However, this leads to repeated process and to high energy consumption. Here, the cluster head is selected by using the swarm intelligence algorithm and LEACH protocol. The hybrid ant colony and modified Particle swarm algorithm are used to select the cluster heads. The CH selection depends on the two parameters, namely residual energy and number of successful transmissions of node. The node's trust is assessed using these two parameters (transmission nodes and residual energy), which also assist in ensuring the safety of the data and energy. The proposed system uses a digital signature algorithm known as the modified RSA algorithm to achieve network security when performing cryptography on data. The performance obtained by the proposed method was compared to other existing techniques in terms of throughput, energy consumption, packet delivery ratio, and network lifetime.","PeriodicalId":104760,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences","volume":"14 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138948235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
