In what by some in the West is being called the post-modern world, fragmentation as well as contradiction of norms, of sociopolitical interests, and of life-styles and goals have partially obliterated traditions that once guided participants in such social institutions as the family, the school, and the wider community in their efforts to socialize the young. Today's often harsh evidence of social disarray surely testifies in part to the problem.","PeriodicalId":104526,"journal":{"name":"Western European Education","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129571928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most adults can recall incidents of bullying in their schooldays. Indeed, it is not uncommon for people to regard bullying as a natural process, part of the inevitable and turbulent process of growing up. The common perception is that by enduring it and perhaps fighting back, boys and girls are toughened up, and then better prepared for life.","PeriodicalId":104526,"journal":{"name":"Western European Education","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131883129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The only exceptions are those parts of the third world where dire poverty and limited access to education deny children any options other than to assist their families from an early age on in their struggle for survival. In developing countries and highly industrialized nations such as Japan, the United States, the Soviet Union, and the majority of the other nations of Europe the meshing of labor market needs and youth's inclinations and potential within the prevailing political ideology constitutes a formidable and extremely intricate task. The process is fraught with stumbling blocks and dysfunctionalities. For this purpose, a brief description of the system's components and operating mechanisms is given to provide the necessary background for two research reports on the quality of training in the FRG and on the effects of the training system on the educational and occupational opportunities of women. The conclusions drawn from these studies are that there is no uniform system of vocational training but there are very distinct segments with different objectives and of very different quality. One example of this segmentation is the unequal training opportunities that the system provides for women. It is predicted that the German system of vocational training will experience a loss of effectiveness unless it succeeds to adapt on-the-job training to changes caused by new technologies.","PeriodicalId":104526,"journal":{"name":"Western European Education","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128788338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
