A comparative study has shown in a previous work that the SOM algorithm gives the closest result to the ideal case. In this paper, this algorithm is improved due to the consideration of two inputs instead of one. Voltage and phase angle variations are applied as inputs. The proposed idea is tested on an IEEE 39-bus system and an IEEE 118-bus system. Simulation results show that this approach gives more coherent and tightened partitions.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129147929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dimensioning is the first step of cellular network planning that determines the approximate number of base stations (BSs) needed to cover a certain area. The proposed approach takes into account user density, service subscriptions, resource allocation, and interference mitigation. It can be implemented in heterogeneous networks involving macrocells, microcells, distributed antenna systems, relays, femtocells, etc. The proposed dimensioning approach determines the number of BSs based on extensive simulations, and allows to analyze the impact of small cells in offloading macrocell traffic.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126286243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wind farms positive contribution in eliminating grid frequency deviations still a grey area, especially, when wind farms replace considerable conventional generation capacities. This paper offers a detailed algorithm to integrate a hydro pumped storage facility to provide power support during frequency events and also absorb/inject active power to smooth wind power fluctuations. First part of offered research work, presented by this paper, estimates the rated power and energy capacities based on several constrains, including wind speeds and load characteristics. The second part discusses the impact of integrating suggested storage plant on frequency and power smoothing. Additionally, the criterion controlling energy storage and injection by storage plant is highlighted. Considered case study represents a defined sector from a genuine conventional grid merged with real wind speeds records at recommended locations to host wind farms. Results reveal the major technical aspects of required storage facility (e.g., number of pumps, reservoir height and volume as well as integrated generator(s) specifications). Sending and/or receiving of data bits over the PLC channel can be easily affected; therefore, several investigations have been conducted to illustrate interference effects over PLC where intermittent noise plays a major role in this type of communications channel. The in-building network is a non-stable system due to the heavy traffic in the wiring system; therefore the power-line communication system gets affected by the internal and external communications factors. In this paper we apply direct connections to the PLC networks in a “unique” method when the 220V mains are on and when off. Indirect connections are also conducted using different types of equipment and connections and results are presented.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122254665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such problems are frequently regarded as intractable. But we show that it is effective to tackle such problems using stochastic optimization methods, even for real-time use, as in model predictive control. We use Sequential Monte Carlo (particle filter) methods, implemented on Graphical Processor Units which allow massive parallelization. We describe the application of these methods to the problem of air-traffic management in a high-density vicinity of an airport (the terminal maneouvering area). We briefly discuss the applicability of the approach to other transport applications.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131852087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our corners are defined as intersection points of non collinear straight image edges, which are very robust against various image transformations like image scaling, rotation, translation and also to viewpoint and illumination changes. Some light updates on the linking edge step that should be applied in order to extract edges and their intersections that construct the searched corners are also discussed. Experiments conducted on real images demonstrate that the proposed method is able to achieve a very good performance in accuracy, stability and especially computational efficiency in comparison with existing methods.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133550218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper summarizes some relevant problems that arose in the tests of LTE equipment carried out at Telecom Italia Lab (TILAB, thtechnological complexitye R&D center of Telecom Italia), and presents an ongoing project that aims at realizing a flexible hardware/software platform to cope with these problems at reasonable costs. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop a Software Defined Networking (SDN) measurements platform, which permits to easily and dynamically configure the measurement devices involved in the test and monitoring functions according to the requirements defined by the operator. Furthermore, the paper proposes the integration of the designed framework in a realistic lab environment, and discusses the improvements introduced to the actual architecture.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"172 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133923441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It allows for multiple cameras to capture a scene from different views or perspectives to create a 3D output. In this paper, we shall introduce a new method to implement within the codec that enables the merging of multiple matrices of pictures (MOPs) from different participants to produce one output. This proposed technique can be used in several scenarios such as in virtual concerts, where each band member is located at a remote geographical area. At the destination, the received data will be combined to form one output. Additionally, the merging process must be done in real-time in order not to affect the rest of the procedures found in MVC. Three different techniques will be proposed to check the best approach for achieving the required goal. Different criteria or parameters are taken as constraints for the merging process, which are the MOP size, frame dimension, frame rate and number of participants. Experimental results demonstrate a real-time merger from one of the proposed techniques.","PeriodicalId":103316,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2014 - 2014 17th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"131 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131467582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
