This study investigated the changes in the CRP level caused by an infection from respiratory virus (RV). Nasopharyngeal samples from hospitalized patients with suspected RV infection were used to measure the CRP levels, virus load, virus-virus co-infection, age, sex, and length of hospital stay (LOS). Abnormal CRP levels were detected in 62.3% (3,608 out of 5,788) of all RV-positive samples. The percentage of patients with abnormal CRP levels tended to increase with age. Furthermore, LOS in patients with abnormal CRP levels was significantly longer than that in patients with normal CRP levels. The frequency of elevated CRP levels differed according to the causative virus and the frequency of abnormal levels increased with age. Moreover, LOS was longer in those with abnormal CRP levels. Moon","doi":"10.15324/KJCLS.2017.49.1.1","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15324/KJCLS.2017.49.1.1","url":null,"abstract":"Zerumbone은 야생 생강의 일종인 Zingiber zerumbet Smith의 정유(essential oil)에 포함되어 있는 주요성분으로, 다양한 연구를 통해 혈액종양을 포함한 암, 염증질환, 활성산소 감소 등에 이용할 가능성이 꾸준히 제기되어왔다. 또한 면역세포들의 증식과 세포주기진행, 사이토카인의 생성ㆍ발현에도 효과를 나타낸다고 알려져 있다. 이외에도 간보호, 통증완화, 항동맥경화, 항미생물 등 다양한 생물학적 기능이 보고되었다. 본 연구에서는 zerumbone이 단구의 활성과 기능에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 하였다. 우선, 단구세포주 THP-1세포의 활성이 zerumbone에 의해 증가되는 것을 확인하였다. LPS 처리 후 가장 강한 THP-1 증식 증가는 5 μM의 zerumbone 처리시 나타났으며, 세포 단독 증식 증가는 10 μM의 zerumbone 처리 시 가장 증가하였다. 반면에 50 μM 의 zerumbone 처리 시에는 LPS 존재 여부와 관계없이 급격한 증식 감소가 관찰되었다. The cell viability, electron donating ability (EDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, and inhibitory activity of lipid peroxidation were evaluated for the antioxidant effect of rosmarinic acid. In these cultures, AlCl 3 sowed a cytotoxic effect by decreasing the cell viability in a dose-dependent manner; then, the XTT 50 value was measured at 142.2 M of AlCl 3 after treating the cultured C6 glioma cells with media containing 120 ∼ 160 M AlCl 3 . Therefore, its toxicity was determined as mid-cytotoxic by Borenfreund and Puerner’s toxic criteria; while, vitamin E of antioxidant markedly increased the cell viability on AlCl 3 – induced cytotoxicity in these cultures. This study showed the antioxidant effect of rosmarinic acid via several assays, such as electron donating activity (EDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, and inhibitory activity of lipid peroxidation. From these findings, it is suggested that the oxidative stress is involved in AlCl 3 -induced cytotoxicity, and rosmarinic acid was effective in the protection of AlCl 3 -induced cytotoxicity by antioxidant activity. However, the impact of co-infections remains unclear. Patients with suspected respiratory virus infections, who visited Dankook University Hospital between December 2006 and February 2014, were included to examine the relationship between co-infections and LOS. Multiplex reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reactions were used to identify the causative viruses. LOS was analyzed with respect to sex, age, virus, and co-infection. During this period, 5,310 out of the 8,860 patients (59.9%; median age, 1.5 years) were respiratory virus-positive. In respiratory virus-positive patients with single, double, and three-or-more infections, the average LOS was 7.3, 6.7, and 6.6 days, respectively. Longer LOS was observed for older patients and those with human coronavirus OC43 infections compared with adenovirus or respiratory syncytial virus A infections. The solute carrier family (SLC) is comprised of influx transporters of steroidal hormones, various drugs, and several other substrates. The differential expression of selected DEGs was confirmed using in situ hybridization analysis. SLC23A3 and SLC39A10 were highly expressed in the ovary. The SLC39A10 gene was expressed in the primordial follicle stage, but SLC23A3 was expressed in the growing follicle stage. Contrastingly, the expression of SLC23A3 was increased in granulosa cells at the growing follicle stage. The differential expressions of SLC23A3 and SLC39A10 between the primordial and primary follicles were additionally confirmed by using follicle isolations. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) — widely used to make flames — are one of the important POPs. Prenatal exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as POPs, may affect global DNA methylation in long interspersed nuclear elements (LINE-1), increasing the risk of obesity later in life. Therefore, pregnant Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were used to elucidate whether BDE-47 and BDE-209 transferred through placenta and breast milk cause epigenetic changes in LINE-1 and increase genetic susceptibility to obesity as obesogen during the developmental periods. Global DNA methylation in LINE-1 and gene expression related to obesity were measured in dams and offspring, using a methylation-sensitive high resolution melting analysis (MS-HRM) and direct bisulfite sequencing and quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), respectively. The results of MS-HRM showed global DNA hypomethylation patterns in LINE-1 of exposed offspring (2 of total 4) at PND 4, but bisulfite sequencing showed no difference in both the exposed and non-exposed groups. Gene expression in dams related to -oxidation pathway and those related to adipokines showed different patterns between the two groups. On the contrary, gene expressions of offspring showed a similar pattern. Gene expressions related to -oxidation pathway and obesity were significantly increased when compared with 'at birth', but not PPAR- .
