This travelling and waiting time can be eliminated or minimized by consolidating the tool and gauge cribs near the master crib, extending the totebox system and providing a dispatching system. In the proposed system the tools and gauges will be delivered at the workstation by the dispatchers. The new system would improve the utilization of the tool and gauge crib attendant’s time and reduce the tool and gauge inventory. The case problem revealed that a net annual labor cost saving of about $320,600 and a saving of $242,100 from the reduction of tool and gauge inventory could be achieved. Despite their frequent use, one of the drawbacks that they display is that the state the manufacturing system is in dictates the level of performance of the rule. As no rule is better than all the other rules for all system states, it would be highly desirable to know which rule is the most appropriate for each given condition, and to this end this paper proposes a scheduling approach that employs inductive learning and backpropagation neural networks. Using these latter techniques, and by analysing the earlier performance of the system, “scheduling knowledge” is obtained whereby the right dispatching rule at each particular moment can be determined. A module that generates new control attributes is also designed in order to improve the “scheduling knowledge” that is obtained. Using GROUPTEC, a case study has been devised and applied to a company, belonging to aluminium‐manufactured products branch. Four analyses of the production flow have been performed, that is, the factory flow analysis; group analysis; line analysis, and tool analysis. After the above technique application, the final results related to the technological cells and their components; part families and machinery groups lead to an adequate cell arrangement, with a grouping efficiency of approximately 98.8 per cent. The proposed MOD‐SLC objective is to test the application of Baroni‐Urban and Buser (BUB) similarity coefficient to the manufacturing cell formation (MCF) problem instead of Jaccard’s similarity coefficient. The MOD‐SLC has been compared and evaluated against three cluster formation‐based heuristics for MCF. The three heuristics are: the single linkage clustering, enhanced rank order clustering, and direct clustering algorithm. The MCF methods considered in this comparative and evaluative study belong to the cluster formation approach of solving the MCF problem. The comparison and evaluation are performed using four published performance measures. A total of 25 published and ten hypothetical and randomly generated problem data sets are used in the proposed evaluative study. Results analysis is carried out to test and validate the proposed BUB based MOD‐SLC. Furthermore, operation type and sequence of operation are defined for the prismatic parts by using the databases achieved from the feature recognition module. After a preliminary characterization of products and manufacturing process, a thorough analysis of the production system has been carried out in order to highlight current problems and improvement strategies in the light of lean manufacturing concepts. Subsequently, suggests some corrective actions and also assesses their expected effectiveness in economic terms. In particular, improvement possibilities have been found in the areas of internal logistics through streamlining of materials flow and layout modifications, as well as process quality increase. Reengineering activities are especially aimed towards layout optimization mainly by resorting to a U‐shaped cell‐based architecture. This is the focus of this study. An analytical model was developed for the assessment of which industrial segment shows the potential to be an international player for having the required organisational competencies. The conceptual framework was built around the idea that participation in an interorganisational network depends on the competencies built by each firm and influences the conditions for strategy formulation. A survey about the recent evolution of industry in Brazil was prepared.
