The system is implemented to execute digital machining and verification, to transmit the NC code data to related machining centers after confirming the properness of virtual machining, and to manipulate the machine through the Internet. Also, this research proposes a basic structure that can monitor the status of machines via the Internet. By applying simulation techniques for machining processes, a simple manipulation and monitoring system of machining centers is realized. Data obtained from 53 construction and manufacturing organisations are analysed. Findings confirm 62 empowerment activities, specifically, their respective influence at four organisational levels (strategic, general, operational, and direct work), and the roles of operatives and management, in effectively performing them. It is shown that almost all levels of an organisation have a significant contribution to play in efficiently performing empowerment activities, whilst senior management (at strategic, general, and operational levels) has greatest influence. The application of this model is substantiated by a case study of a leading clothing manufacturer in Hong Kong. On the technical side, the findings support the notion of harnessing information technologies (the Web, e‐mail, and electronic data interchange) to integrate business processes across the clothing supply chain. That is, information technologies could facilitate SCM, adding more value to customers. On the managerial side, the study highlights that manufacturers can assume a proactive role in leading changes in a supply chain, and that a fair share of gains from co‐operation must exist if collaboration between supply chain members is to be developed. However, the performance evaluation is quite subjective since it relies on the individual judgements of supervisors who have different perceptions of the process performance. This paper presents a performance measurement system to determine the priority in execution of quality improvement according to the performances of processes. Using a model containing a set of strategy‐related performance measures, misdirection of implementation of improvement projects due to subjective evaluation of process performance can be reduced. A fuzzy set of quality measures is introduced to calculate numerical quality rating for processes. The model is simulated and experimented on with a conventional improvement implementation practice. The major idea is to convert the data structure, system behavior and computational aspect of the QCIS into models: object, dynamic and functional models using the object‐oriented modeling technique in a user‐friendly and economical way. Then, based on an SME environment, the paper expounds the methodology by implementing the models into a computerized QCIS. The system is expected to be affordable and self‐developed by most SMEs. The system can manipulate quality data dynamically to keep the quality control information up to date. A number of quality related research studies have reported on the potential of ISO 9000 as a foundation for TQM, and the possibility of the existence of a quality continuum, commencing with ISO 9000 and progressing to TQM. However, there is a paucity of sector specific research in this area. Following a critique of the literature, a UK and Irish research survey involving the 90 leading brewing organisations is analysed and discussed. The paper concludes that considerable complementarity exists between ISO 9000 and TQM. Furthermore, TQM is considered to be best implemented within the controlled environment/quality assurance environment of ISO 9000. The objective of this audit is to estimate the needed flexibility by linking it to the uncertainty experienced in the company’s manufacturing operations. The premise of this approach is that the need for flexibility is triggered by some recurring operational change in the company’s environment. Introduces two distinct classes of flexibility‐related changes on the basis of their source: external and internal. The flexibility audit consists of a structured questionnaire that is designed to identify and prioritize the changes being experienced by the facility. Subsequently prioritizes and links the changes to different flexibility types. Reports the results of the audit in three easy to read tables. Expects the audit to be the first step in any flexible manufacturing design (FMD) effort. In the mid 1980s, Dr Eli Goldratt introduced a new management philosophy called the theory of constraints (TOC). This philosophy contained a new set of performance measures which linked together the strategic objectives and operational capabilities of the organization. This linkage allows for the maximization of profits. Since its introduction, there has been a growing amount of evidence documenting TOC’s ability to more tightly link local decisions to organizational performance than those of traditional cost accounting. This research used a simple Gedunken experiment to evaluate the difference between strategy driven product‐mix decisions based on TOC accounting and traditional cost accounting.
