In Germany the developing resistance situation is critical. The resistance data of the most relevant drug-bug combinations are calculated with data from the German Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance (ARS) system. For four of these drug-bug combinations, incidence reduction targets for 2030 (bloodstream infections per 100,000 inhabitants) have been outlined in the German Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy (DART 2030) action plan. The incidence for the gram-positive vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are currently within the target range. However, this is not the case for Escherichia coli with resistance to third generation Cephalosporins and Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, both of which are increasing in incidence. In an EU comparison, the incidence of AMR in Germany ranks in the middle.In addition to the resistance data and incidence, the Measuring Infectious Causes and Resistance Outcomes for Burden Estimation (MICROBE) project presents the absolute numbers of mortalities from infections with antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. In Germany, 40,000 deaths per year are associated with antibiotic-resistant infections, and in almost 10,000 of these cases the death was attributable to the antibiotic-resistant pathogen. This means that more people in Germany are dying from antibiotic-resistant infections than other infectious diseases.The effects on the healthcare system are substantial; the increasing antibiotic resistance in particular leads to greater burden of disease in haemato-oncological diseases and poses challenges to effective perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis.</p>","PeriodicalId":9562,"journal":{"name":"Bundesgesundheitsblatt, Gesundheitsforschung, Gesundheitsschutz","volume":" ","pages":"546-555"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2026-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13132887/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147763409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly at the municipal and federal state levels, closer collaboration between research and public health practice is needed. In Saxony-Anhalt, a cooperation agreement was concluded in 2024 between the City of Magdeburg and Magdeburg University Medicine (UMMD) to institutionally strengthen their existing collaboration. In the same year, a project agreement involving additional public health stakeholders was established to create a sustainable framework for systematic exchange between academia and public health administration.This article presents ongoing collaborative initiatives in Saxony-Anhalt, including projects on the analysis of school entry examinations, in-depth evaluations of Early Childhood Intervention Services (Frühe Hilfen), e‑mental health interventions for children and adolescents, and the public health response to Mpox. These examples illustrate how regional cooperation between academia and practice can be operationalized and highlight the opportunities such collaborations offer for the continued development of the Public Health Service. In addition, knowledge translation formats such as regular coordination meetings, scientific events, and practice-oriented training play a key role in facilitating the transfer of evidence into public health practice.The experiences from Saxony-Anhalt are consistent with the recommendations of the Advisory Board of the Pakt ÖGD, which has called, among other measures, for the establishment of teaching and research public health offices, bridge professorships, and sustainable funding structures. This was evident, among other things, in a state-directed, controlled, hierarchically organized and, in parts, totalitarian competitive sports system. A key component was a conspiratorial, state-controlled program of compulsory doping, which was systematically implemented from the 1970s onwards and affected an estimated 15,000 underage athletes. Performance-enhancing substances, primarily anabolic-androgenic steroids, were administered covertly, without the knowledge, information, or consent of those affected, often before puberty and despite known health risks. In addition to the effects of the doping substances, which enabled training loads beyond physiological limits, there was discipline, pressure to perform, surveillance, isolation, and abuse by sports officials. The resulting impairments to biopsychosocial development are still evident today in the form of serious health damage. Alongside disruptions to hormonal regulatory systems, growth and organ damage, cardiovascular diseases, tumors and degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system, and mental disorders with a lifetime prevalence of up to 98% are of particular concern, especially depressive, phobic, and somatoform pain disorders. Despite the laws providing assistance to victims of doping, the political and legal management of this particular injustice perpetrated by the SED remains unsatisfactory.
