It exposes the difficulties users meet for recovering from system errors (recognition, perception and interpretation errors). It shows that in ubiquitous computing, error handling difficulty is exacerbated by systems characteristics such as the unobtrusiveness and the invisibility of the devices, and the users' lack of control and awareness about the pervasive environment. The paper then discusses how adapting good interface design practices to ubiquitous computing applications can improve their robustness to system errors. Good practices include adopting a more user-centred design approach, providing a system image, and making ubiquitous applications more predictable in order to facilitate the emergence of adequate user mental models.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Youngness as well as poor high-order-driving-skills (HODS) are associated with the ND over-representation in road crashes [28]. Most studies focusing on road risks in newly licensed drivers use data referring to crash situations [37], but little is known about difficulties they experience daily while driving. This paper reports the first results of an exploratory study on difficult situations experienced by ND during their first months of driving. 48 young ND were interviewed using the Critical Incident Technique. 92 Critical incidents were obtained representing a wide set of perceived-as-difficult situations by ND that goes beyond typical road crash or near-crash situations. The analysis suggests that poor HODS, lack of collective driving skills and cognitive load due to inexperience might also explain these difficult situations. We plan to clarify the HODS involved in all the collected difficult situations while considering the framework of non-technical-skills (NTS) [14] for the development of training scenario for simulation-based driving education and assessment.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Specific decision making use cases for a demonstrator system were analysed to capture opportunities and requirements for effective human-agent cooperative decision making. These requirements covered agent design, human-machine interface design, context aware computing requirements and human competency. As such, the paper provides concrete examples of how general principles for hybrid decision making can be applied to EAS, and presents a pilot of a method for future requirements elicitation.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Multimodal feedback can improve depth perception in VEs, but this has yet to be implemented and tested in engineering applications with systems which provide haptic feedback to the body. The project reported in this paper will develop a multimodal VE to improve engineers' understanding of 3D spaces. It will test the concept of \"sensory illusions\" where the point of collision in the VE differs to the point of haptic feedback on the body. This will permit the use of fewer vibrotactile devices and therefore the development of a more wearable system. This paper describes related work in multisensory and tactile stimulation which suggests that our perception of a stimulus is not fixed to the point of contact.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... HCI Design Methods: where next? from user-centred to creative design and beyond HCI设计方法:下一步何去何从?从以用户为中心到创意设计等等

HCI design evolved into human-centred and creative approaches to the conceptualising and building of user interfaces. De Haan [1] identified a number of factors underlying the changing nature of HCI design in moving towards ubiquitous computing and the Internet of Things. HCI and new media design focussed on light-weight product as mashups of readily available functions and services, and design became a prototyping, feature-driven and an iterative/incremental activity, with a highly flexible and exploratory approach to product design. Three factors describe the changes in design methodology: increasing extension of user-centred design, increasingly higher level software tools and frameworks, and the application of agile design and design exploration. For each factor, a supporting practice-oriented design method is discussed to illustrate the possible future developments in HCI design. In the conclusion, the paper proposes several recommendations regarding the further development of HCI design.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... It should specify the relevant evaluation dimensions depending on the environment (REAL or VIRTUAL) and task that can be performed (I DO an action, or I WATCH an action). These conditions can have an impact on the mental representation of the object, since they may involve a different perspective taking and spatial reference. A first study highlights that participants produced larger task verbalization (describe an object or simulate its use) in virtual context that in real context, and a second study showed that an observer evaluates the usability of objects more favorably than an actor.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Researchers have suggested that internet users experience difficulty in accessing necessary information and do not pay enough attention to its credibility. We present here the design and implementation of an automated Web Credibility Assessment Support Tool (WebCAST) that considers multiple factors (type of website, popularity, sentiment, date of last update, reputation and review based on users' ratings reflecting personal experience) for assessing the credibility of information and returns a summary indication of the credibility of a website. We use Potentially All Pairwise RanKings of all possible Alternatives (PAPRIKA) method of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to give weights to the scale values on each factor, representing the relative importance of the attributes. An empirical evaluation of the tool was conducted by computing the correlation between the tool-generated credibility scores and that of human judges. The correlation was found to be 0.89, thus verifying the validity of the tool. In the future the proposed tool can be made useful to students in their learning process of credibility assessment.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Ecological Interface Design (EID) offers some interesting tools that can be of help in the design process. The literature on cognitive control also offers a good understanding of operators' cognitive resources. Analysing the activity of both expert and novice operators through these two frameworks may help us to better understand the differences between them. A three-step protocol was followed: 1. the elaboration of a means-end hierarchy, 2. the extraction of schemes via interviews, and 3. the evaluation of the behavioural manifestation of schemes. In the present case study, interviews revealed that both the novice and expert operators of a manufacturing process shared a representation of the global process. However, in contrast with the expert operators, the novice operators did not develop an operative scheme that related to the machine. The results will be used as a basis for the design of a human-machine interface that will aid them to do so.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ...
