However, despite this capacity for originality, Pollock’s life was bracketed by severe binge drinking, alcoholism, and emotional instability. The importance of identity formation for healthy development is illustrated by a psychobiographical study of Jackson Pollock. Pollock’s difficulties in establishing a stable identity seemed to play an integral part in impeding a positive life course. The developmental theory of Erik Erikson was the lens through which Pollock’s life was studied, with a focus on Erikson’s proposed fifth stage of development, Identity versus Role Confusion. From the study it emerged that it was largely the individuals who surrounded Pollock who shaped him into what they wanted him to be with Pollock lacking the stable sense of self to protect him from a society that treated both him and the art he poured himself into as a commodity to be celebrated and vilified on whim. Alcoholism would cause his death at the age of 44, when, while heavily intoxicated, Jackson Pollock drove his car into a tree.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47238656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article aims to share some methodological experiences from the field. Eight one-on-one narrative interviews were conducted with participants who were mothers or female guardians of a child who did not know his or her biological father. The study was located in Johannesburg and explored circumstances that contributed to non-disclosure of a biological father. Participants were recruited through snowballing and were a non-probability sample. They were aged between 33 and 60 years. Each participant was interviewed once. Methodological reflections reported here cover recruitment, interviews and ethics. This article reports a challenge with recruiting middle-class participants when gatekeepers felt that the topic was sensitive and may have legal repercussions for participants. We report on successful recruitment via online platforms and face-to-face community-based announcements. Whilst the response to recruitment was vast, not all interested parties were eligible, including men who did not know their fathers. Women in this study mainly opted for one-on-one interviews instead of focus group discussions. There was a challenge with maintaining complete privacy as some participants themselves agreedto have other family members nearby during the interview. Also, working in this community posed challenges with obtaining member-checking and receiving feedback on the transcripts. This article reports on a number of experiences that are relevant for future similar studies with women in low-income settings. The article suggests an adoption of gender-sensitive recruitment strategies with sensitivity regarding the gendered social gaze that is directed at women who have not disclosed the father’s identity to a child. The positive response from prospective participants indicated willingness from the general population to talk to researchers about unknown fathers. Ethical imperatives such as auditory and visual privacy and the imperative to conduct member checking need to be adapted for local contexts.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45764047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article expands the discussion on the West’s easternisation. It elaborates on the increasing importance assigned to the situation in the West particularly in social psychology – a traditionally Western discipline adopting a seemingly eastern-oriented notion as its central focus. I demonstrate how the notion of situational forces has gained increasing acceptance in social psychology, how its popularity has spread to other disciplines such as philosophy and into general public discourse. I examine the origin of this evolvement (particularly whether it manifests any conscious appropriation of Eastern thought) by tracking the influences on its key figures. The findings suggest that this case of ‘easternisation’ does not result from a conscious uptake of Eastern philosophy, but rather seems to be a separate, independent development within the West. I propose that this may be a natural result of Western dualism and the tendency to swing between perceived opposites, as well as of the Western insistence on observation and empiricism as the primary sources of knowledge.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42736706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research sample consisted of 554 Dutch participants of whom 355 were women and 199 men. The average age of the women was 42.02 years (SD = 10.77) and the average age of the men was 44.62 years (SD =11.06). All participants were engaged in a steady heterosexual relationship. Higher sex drive scores were significantly positively related to the frequency of reported masturbation (B = .14; t(550) = 10.33, p < .001) and the frequency of reported partnered sex (B = .07; t(550) = 5.10, p < .001). Furthermore, women reported a masturbation frequency of about once per two weeks, while men reported a significantly higher masturbation frequency of about twice per week (B = -.77; t(551) = -11.70, p < .001). Regarding reported frequency of partnered sex, no significant gender difference was found (B = -.04; t(551) = -.62, p = .534). Both women and men reported a frequency of about three times per two weeks. With regard to masturbation, a mediation analysis controlled for age with sex drive as a mediator, showed that sex drive significantly mediated the relationship between gender and the reported frequency of masturbation (Z = -9.14, SE = .06, p < .001). The same mediation analysis was performed regarding the reported frequency of partnered sex. For partnered sex, sex drive also had a significant mediation effect, but as a suppressor (Z = -4.85, SE = .05, p < .001). It is concluded that in steady heterosexual relationships, the gender difference in sex drive is responsible for the fact that men masturbate more than women. Possible reasons for this are explored.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48034227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was conducted in Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province of South Africa to explore the perceptions and attitudes of girls about the practice of Inkciyo – virginity testing. Participants were aged 16 to 19 years from St John’s College. Data were collecte through five focus group discussions with eight respondents per group. Audio data were transcribed and translated into English. Data were managed through QSR NVIVO 8. Our findings show that participants started participating in Inkciyo before the legal age of 16. Respondents cite various reasons for participating in Inkciyo including preserving their Xhosa culture, pride, and enjoying community support. Non-participation in the practice was attributed to non-performance of Inkciyo in their communities. We conclude that research is needed to investigate the acceptability of Inkciyo in other communities and to assess its impact on modifying sexual behaviour for positive sexual health outcomes, in particular reducing HIV incidence in these communities.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44799423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
