The main aim of the study was to gain a clearer understanding of the impact of shift work on the health and wellbeing of campus security guards. The evidence from the study clarifies what many other researchers’ have revealed about the negative impact of shift work on the health and wellbeing of employees. However, more specifically, the study revealed five issues around how shift work has an impact on the health and wellbeing of campus security guards. These issues were deduced through the application of semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. The study showed that shift work has an impact on a number of underlying factors such as disrupted family lives and religious gatherings; limited control leading to stress; working conditions’ impact on health; and disturbed sleeping patterns. All of these had a role in decreasing employees’ job performance and ultimately impacting on the organisation’s effectiveness. Apart from regulation, the study calls on government to be more involved in the health and wellbeing of the South African workforce, especially security guards. The study makes a number of suggestions to that effect.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46951407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Integrating a Fanonian conception of intersubjective recognition with Kohut’s work on narcissism and self-object relations, it is argued that the enduring nature of psychopathology in colonized peoples is readily sustained by denigrating ties to hegemonic colonial selfobjects- the symbolic “gleam†identified so lucidly by Armah in his novel. It is suggested that positing the existence of selfobjects which are actively harmful, instead of necessarily compensatory and/or curative, enhances the dialectical strength of Kohutian self-psychology in previously colonized nations. Such an extension also places self-psychology in explicit dialogue with Fanon’s sociogenic diagnosis of psychopathology; providing one potential interpretative lens through which to explore what processes of decolonization might intimate regarding the psychic reality of the colonizer/colonized dyad.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43521995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It investigates the held perspective of what elements or components create a foundation of a professional. The aim was to explore the need of understanding professionalism as a term and practice at university. Furthermore, the aim was to engage students in a critical reflexive process in order to gain deeper understanding of the discourses that have influence in their lives, and how it impacts both their personal and professional lives. Bandura’s Social Learning Theory and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory were used to substantiate the argument of the study topic. This paper is an integration of two research studies that examine professionalism. Firstly, a systematic literature search was conducted and narrative synthesis approach was used to analyse homogenous studies that investigated professionalism in the healthcare sector. Secondly, a masters’ cohort engaged in a process of sharing life stories to examine the influence of dominant social discourses (race; gender; and class) and how it has given meaning to how they view the world and gives meaning to the things around them. The purpose was to develop critical reflexivity for the students in an educational setting. The outcomes from both research studies suggest that professionalism is a term that is complex to define; while, also promoting the importance of engaging in life story work that necessitates introspection and coming to understand who we are and what world we live in by acquiring the skill to be critically reflexive.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43214731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study is based on a qualitative research method using in-depth semi-structured open-ended interviews and a focus group for data collection. The sample consisted of three adolescents as this was a pilot study. Thematic data analysis method was used to analyse data. The study findings cover the negative and positive experiences and the perceived role of HAART treatment over a longer period of time. The predominant themes identified from participants were disclosure of HIV-positive status and the stigma surrounding a positive status, early childhood experience of parental death, challenges of taking HAART treatment, factors influencing adherence and non-adherence to HAART treatment, and lastly, the impact of religion on HAART treatment adherence. The findings suggest that adolescents who are on HAART treatment over an extended period of time experience drug fatigue. Drug fatigue has far-reaching implications for the health of adolescents, as it has a higher likelihood that poor adherence or even complete refusal to take HAART treatment will occur. Poor adherence or refusal to take HAART treatment will most likely lead to cross infection and further spread of HIV and AIDS. A recommendation was made to include the establishment of a youth and adolescent-friendly centre by the hospital – one that is designated for the provision of tailored adolescent services and sensitive to adolescent developmental stages so as to minimise the likelihood of infected adolescents falling through the healthcare cracks. The introduction of a hospital-based school, an education unit run by dedicated and qualified facilitators focusing on aiding hospitalised learners with catch-up scholarly programmes, was a further recommendation","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43322338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Risk Factors for Virological Failure (RFVF) study compared 158 cases with VF (viral load, VL, >1,000 copies/mL) and 300 controls with virological suppression (VL ≤1,000 copies/mL) after ≥5 months on their first ART regimen at McCord Hospital in Durban, South Africa between October 2010 and June 2012. RFVF participants completed a battery of various psychosocial measures. Using multivariate logistic regression stratified for gender, the association of various psychosocial factors with VF was assessed. It was found that not all factors were equally significant for both genders. The factors that were significantly associated with VF for both genders were younger age, shorter treatment duration and reporting depressive symptoms. The factors associated with VF that differed by gender were religious inactivity, having HIV+ family members, and status disclosure to friends.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":"12 2 1","pages":"2-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46152746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The researcher used Arksey and O’Malley’s six-stage scoping review method. The researcher reviewed articles from Springer Link, Ebsco Host, Pub Med and Psych Info that were found using the keywords ‘depression’; ‘HIV’; and ‘primary healthcare’ and that were published between 2010 and 2015. A final number of 27 articles were included in the scoping review. The review found that symptoms of depression in HIV positive patients can have a detrimental effect on their health-seeking behaviour and disease progression. Patients often do not report psychological symptoms of depression, unless enquired into, and usually focus on their physical symptoms. Additionally, there is a clear relationship between depression and antiretroviral treatment non-adherence and that treating depression with antidepressants or psychotherapy results in increased levels of adherence. Standardised and routine screening for depression in people living with HIV in primary care is the most ideal solution to this problem; a context-specific model that takes into account the shortage of resources in South Africa is greatly needed.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46488299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Learner performance is linked to sufficient psychological, medical and social support. This study was an evaluation of a non-governmental organisation aimed at providing learners with psycho-social support and used the application of an Appreciative Inquiry approach. An Appreciative Inquiry approach is a method for generating change within an organisation by looking at what works in the organisation and facilitating active participation. The main findings from this study were that the programme seems to have positively affected learners’ performance both academically and behaviourally; the programme was perceived to have raised the general standard of academic performance at the school.","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45511898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explored how young adults who were raised as only children experienced interpersonal relationships, specifically their relationships with peers, parents and romantic partners. Qualitative interviews were conducted with seven young adults who are only children. Participants were recruited using snowball sampling. Interviews were analysed using thematic content analysis. Participants described their relationships with their parents as good, often referring to them as friends or older siblings. All participants shared that they had limited experience with romantic relationships. Since many of the participants’ parents were divorced, parental divorce may have influenced the parent-child dynamic and deterred participants from entering into romantic relationships. However, even participants whose parents were married reported few romantic relationships and some believed that this may have been due to not having siblings who could have acted as role models in romantic relationships. The young adults also reported that being an only child did not affect their ability to make friends and viewed personality as more influential in forming friendships than being an only child. Whilst participants reported growing up as only children to be a largely positive experience, all expressed a desire to share a sibling bond. ","PeriodicalId":92427,"journal":{"name":"New voices in psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46400867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
