The study sought to establish whether qualities of growth may have manifested during the aftermath of being unsuccessful and how this may have affected the participants’ success. The study adopted a qualitative research method and data were collected by means of individual semi-structured interviews. The data produced 7 superordinate themes, Choosing psychology and undergraduate experience; master’s selection and the first attempt; rejection and the process; preparation and the second attempt; “rejection” remains a constant; accepted but am I good-enough; and acceptance and the new insights. The process of becoming a psychologist, which is filled with uncertainty and growth, resonates with the eventual dynamics psychologists must grapple with in training and in practice. Essentially, being unsuccessful creates a void, an anxiety that unsuccessful applicants should process and, hopefully, accept. Most of the research on stressors experienced in nursing has focused on stress levels among registered nurses, with scant attention being given to nursing students, who are also exposed to substantial stressors. This study investigated stressors, professional quality of life (compassion fatigue, burnout and compassion satisfaction) and meaning among nursing students. One hundred and forty four participants (Mage = 21.59, SD = 3.76, female = 86.81%) completed surveys on professional quality of life and meaning. A subgroup of 16 participants (Mage = 20.31, SD = 1.49, female = 80%) provided qualitative data (nominal group technique, a group interview and narrative sketches). Quantitative data indicated that participants were at high risk for the development of compassion fatigue and burnout. The qualitative findings highlighted sources of stressors that were not identified by means of the quantitative instruments, for example academic workload and financial challenges. The prestigious event was a five day thriller held in conjunction with Unisa's psychology department. It started on Monday, June the 24th and ran until the Friday of the same week. Reflecting on those five days, I can confirm that these are moments I will live to cherish forever. Simply put, they are the epitome of my young career life as an aspiring psychologist. But quite paradoxically, the fulfilment and realisation of this almost impossible dream did not come at a reasonable price.
