{"title":"Does Progress Bars’ Behavior Influence the User Experience in Human-Computer Interaction?","authors":"Guillaume Gronier, Alexandre Baudet","doi":"10.17140/pcsoj-5-144","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17140/pcsoj-5-144","url":null,"abstract":"Background: This research focuses on the satisfaction and waiting times perceived by a user during the moments where the interaction between the user and the system is temporarily interrupted (file download, setup of a program, etc.). These waiting times are often sources of anxiety and irritation. They go usually with the presentation of an animated progress bar, allowing the user to visualize the status of the ongoing process. The objective of this research is to study the impact of several progress bars by varying the progress behavior with three different speed. Methods: Three progress bars were tested, each of them having the same display duration of 10 seconds but with different speed. The first progress bar having a speed-up behavior (the progress bar fills to about 30% during the first 5 seconds, then fills completely as it accelerates), the second a slow-down behavior (the progress bar fills to about 70% during the first 5 seconds, then fills completely when decelerating), the third a constant behavior (the progress bar keeps a constant filling rate during the 10 seconds). Eleven hundred twenty seven distinct subjects (controlled IP) were involved, including 105 women and 1022 men. The mean age of the sample was 24.9 years (SD=7.11). Each subject has to play with an online game, which was a pretext to present a standby screen of 10 seconds when one of the three progress bars were displayed in a random manner. Results: The results confirm the existence of a causal link between the perception of waiting time and satisfaction. In addition, a progress bar that follows a slow-down function is significantly more appreciated by the users. An ANOVA-test applied to the comparison of means for each of the progress bars shows that there is a significant difference in the satisfaction of waiting for durations (F(2, 1124)=3.003, MSE=1.099, p=.050, np2=0.270). On the other hand, there is no significant difference in the perception of waiting durations. Conclusions: Our results show in our context of experimentation that a progress bar with a decelerating filling rate provides greater satisfaction than a constant progress bar or a speed-up bar. The results may provide valuable information for the design of human-computer interfaces and for the improvement of user experience. Thus, beyond varying waiting time duration, different levels of users’ arousal could be introduced as well as the user feedback with information relevant to the ongoing processes.","PeriodicalId":92285,"journal":{"name":"Psychology and cognitive sciences : open journal","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87507241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of nudge has generated considerable interest among academics and policymakers. However, ten years later, what is meant exactly by “nudge” is still a matter of debate. In fact, there is a fundamental discrepancy between the (original) narrow definition of Thaler and Sunstein (nudge in the narrow sense, NN) and the (later) broad definition of Sunstein (nudge in the broad sense, NB). These two definitions differ regarding the instrumental use of rationality failures, and accordingly whether the provision or disclosure of information counts as a nudge or not. From a pragmatic perspective, the paper argues for a position that consists of adopting the broad definition of a nudge while acknowledging several types of nudges, which we provide in an integrative view. We suggest that future research should assess the effectiveness of these different types of nudges separately.","PeriodicalId":92285,"journal":{"name":"Psychology and cognitive sciences : open journal","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78715325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For most organizations, a transformation is a ‘must’ and intelligent collaboration, a desired value, is mentioned in much writings and analyses. But it is not simple or often spontaneous. The first step toward a real transformation comes by improving the quality of key conversations, exploiting potential of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) in non-anonymous networks. Collaborative intelligence methods and tools are helping many organizations to do this. This article details the experience of a Spain-based team in implementing transformation processes by drastically improving the quality of key conversations.","PeriodicalId":92285,"journal":{"name":"Psychology and cognitive sciences : open journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41865384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobile health mental health options (i.e., smartphones/devices and apps) are part of a broader framework of e-mental health options. Technology usually offers portability for access anytime/anywhere, are relatively inexpensive and have additional features (e.g., context-aware interventions and sensors with real-time feedback). The evidence-based literature shows that many people have an openness to technology as a way to engage others, change behaviors and obtain clinical services. Skills/competencies for mobile health, smartphone/device and app have similarities and differences from in-person and telepsychiatric care. It is suggested that evidence-based apps be used with an evidence-based approach. Relatively few treatment studies evaluate outcomes for mobile health, directly compare it to in-person and e-behavioral healthcare or compare new technology-based care options to one another. Few studies have assessed the cognitive function related to smartphone/device and app use. At least three facets of cognition that are affected by these technologies: attention, memory and delay of gratification (reward processing). More research is needed with respect tohealth services delivery models, effectiveness, competency outcomes and how a paradigm shift like mobile health re-contextualizes digital healthcare.","PeriodicalId":92285,"journal":{"name":"Psychology and cognitive sciences : open journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46141290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The variables that were examined as possible predictors of self-reported sustainable behavior were: world-minded value orientation, global-human and national sense of belonging/identity, perceived environmental risk, and globalization impact in general and on one’s country. The internal consistency of the measures used to assess the seven variables ranged from 0.73 to 0.83. Results The strongest predictors of greater self-reported sustainable behavior were perceived positive general globalization impact and greater perceived environmental risk, followed by a stronger sense of national belonging/identity and global belonging/identity. There were notable relationships among the predictor variables: 1) National and global belonging/identities were moderately correlated suggesting their co-extensive nature rather than polarization, 2) More positive impact of globalization in general and on one’s country were positively correlated, 3) Stronger world-minded value orientation was related to a stronger sense of global belonging/identity, and 4) Stronger sense of global belonging/identity was associated with higher perceived environmental risk. Conclusion The results are discussed in the context of the superordinate goal theory.","PeriodicalId":92285,"journal":{"name":"Psychology and cognitive sciences : open journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43198610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
