A regular and balanced diet helps in a better glycemic control in type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The objective of this survey was to examine the current dietary practices and to get a view of the current practice of doctors towards advising diet to their diabetic patients. Methods: A survey form consisting of 21 questions, was specifically designed to understand doctor’s view on recommended or discouraged diet for diabetic patients. The survey form was circulated to the doctors across various geographical locations of India. The obtained response was analyzed and the results were expressed in terms of percentages based on the number of responses obtained. Results: The survey included 644 consulting physicians who responded to the distributed survey questionnaire. Majority of the doctors selected 1800 – 2200 calorie and 1800 calorie diet for healthy men and women respectively and opined that restricting the calorie intake can help in weight reduction as well as a better control of glycemia in diabetic patients. The rice intake should be discouraged in diabetic patients as per 46.7 % of doctors and 48.6% of doctors believed that potato, sweet potato, and carrots should be avoided by patients with diabetes. 61.3% of doctors opined about avoiding mangoes, banana and grapes for diabetic patients. Surprisingly instead of ripe fruits, 26.4% of doctor’s recommended all unripe fruits. Seasonal fruits such as apple, guava, carrots were suggested only up to 200 gm by 46.2% of doctors and up to 400 gm by 30.3% of doctors. Most doctors preferred that dietary fats should only contribute to about 10% -20% of calories and preferred it to be from olive oil. Egg should be consumed without egg yolk as per 60.3% of doctors’ opinion. Artificial sweeteners can be taken as they are considered safe in moderate amount as preferred by 51.6% doctors. In this survey, majority of the doctors agreed on avoiding sweet items and food item with high glycemic index. Conclusion: A good proportion of qualified physicians lack sufficient knowledge of important aspects in nutrition: ideal calorie intake for men and women; glycemic index of fruits and vegetable; recommendation of ripe/unripe fruits or fruit juices; intake of sweets, artificial sweetener and cane sugar. This highlights the need of better training for first-line health-care providers and we recommend dietary management to be included in medical education at all specialty ladders.","PeriodicalId":92021,"journal":{"name":"Current research in diabetes & obesity journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45084713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diabetes complications and its comorbidities contribute to increased death rates. NHS reported that 7% of mortalities in Qatar were caused by diabetes and related complications [1]. National survey conducted in 2012 among Qataris found that the prevalence of diabetes among adult population was 16.7% in both sexes. Proportion of overweight individuals was at 70.1%, hypertensive individuals were 33% while obesity was at 41.4% [2]. This high incidence of diabetes precipitated from the rapid socio-economic development in the country which led to low physical activity, unhealthy food choices and obesity.","PeriodicalId":92021,"journal":{"name":"Current research in diabetes & obesity journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45871638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When energy getting exceed than energy needed, ultimately person lands into obesity. Metabolic syndrome considered as a coexistence clinical sign and syndrome like hypertension, cardiovascular diseases or type 2 diabetes which used to corelate with long term obesity. Metabolic syndrome usually associated of increased circumference of waist, enhanced fasting blood glucose, hyperinsulinemia, reduced blood level of HDL cholesterol, increased peripheral arterial pressure, proinflammatory and prothrombotic states. The etiological factors of metabolic syndrome used to relate usually with two causes: “associated with adipose tissue” and “associated with diabetes”. The fundamental effects of all these metabolic changes leads to increased fat mass, which is considered as basic element of the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. Inadequate physical activity, caloric and highly processed fast foods are also responsible for the development of Metabolic Syndrome. In this current review study, it was discussed how adipose tissue has an influence in the progression of metabolic syndrome and the common denominator that links obesity to insulin resistance, which leads to low grade chronic inflammatory states in children and adolescent.","PeriodicalId":92021,"journal":{"name":"Current research in diabetes & obesity journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44163356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results could provide insights to help improve diabetes care and reduce mental health burden. Methods: Thirty-two people with diabetes (63% female, 75% with type 2 diabetes, 65±8 years old) were anonymously surveyed, providing quantitative demographic data regarding participant characteristics and emotional distress and qualitative data on participant perceptions and experiences. Responses and results were reviewed in current clinical context. Results: Over 50% of participants experienced some distress: 25% had negative perceptions of their current diabetes care. Significantly more women expressed feelings of being overwhelmed by their diabetes. Information about complications motivated them most strongly. This effect was greater in men, with women more likely to experience associated diabetes distress. Qualitative responses provided an insight into the daily challenges faced by people with diabetes, especially women. Themes of blame, guilt and fear were common, with suggestions for improved care in a manner similar to recommendations in psychosocial literature. Conclusion: People with diabetes report experiencing negative attitudes from their diabetes care providers, contributing to diabetes distress, despite extensive literature recommending the opposite care practice. From the patient’s viewpoint, literature recommendations regarding supportive “person-centered” diabetes care and education need to be practiced at diagnosis, as well as during treatment. Perhaps further understanding of gender-specific diabetes educational approaches could also improve mental health outcomes, especially altering focus on complications as motivation in women.","PeriodicalId":92021,"journal":{"name":"Current research in diabetes & obesity journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47804850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
