Methods: The study enrolled 25 patients (ranging from 57 to 71 years) with signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. They received a combination therapy with arabinogalactan, trehalose and hyaluronic acid one drop three times a day for the first week and subsequently according to their symptoms. Ocular surface disease index score, tolerability and adherence were used to evaluate subjective symptoms of dry eye disease at enrolment (T0), week 1 (T1) and week 4 (T2). Clinical signs were assessed at T0 and T2. The assessment plan included: slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment, uncorrected and corrected visual acuity, ocular protection index, tear film break up time, osmolarity, meniscometry, evaluation of conjunctival hyperemia according to Efron’s classification, the presence of MMP-9, conjunctival and corneal staining and intraocular pressure. Results: The study group showed significant improvement in several clinical parameters after treatment. Ocular surface disease index score was significantly lower at the end of the follow up period, also evaluation of tolerability (ocular burning, ocular itching and blurred vision), before and after instillation, showed a statistically significant improvement at T0 and T1. Improvements in tear film break up time, meniscometry results and conjunctival and corneal hyperemia were statistically significant in the study group (p <0.05). A statistically significant, decrease in MMP-9 levels was also observed. Conclusions: Preliminary findings suggest that the new combination of topical solution based on arabinogalactan, trehalose and hyaluronic acid, could be effective in reducing early inflammatory markers, symptoms and signs, associated with the progression of dry eye disease.","PeriodicalId":91939,"journal":{"name":"Open access journal of ophthalmology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82427601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: This prospective, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted at a tertiary eye care centre in a medical university in India between July and December 2020. 300 healthy participants in age group between 18 to 60 years were recruited from amongst the residents, staff and patients coming for routine examination in Ophthalmology department. Participants with history of systemic/ocular disease, ocular surgery, pregnancy or spherical equivalent refraction >±1D were excluded from study. CH and corneal compensated intra-ocular pressure (IOP-cc) was assessed using ORA. Statistical analysis was done to calculate mean CH in study population. Inter-ocular and gender-wise variability in mean CH was analysed using independent-t test. Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated to study correlation of CH between eyes and with age, gender, IOP-cc and central corneal thickness (CCT). Results: 162 males and 134 females were recruited. The mean age was 37.5±11 years and mean CH in overall study population, males and females were 10.57±1.12, 10.25±0.90, 10.96±1.22 mm Hg. No significant difference in CH, IOP-cc and CCT was observed between eyes. A strong positive correlation was observed in CH between eyes (r=0.75, p<0.001). Conclusions: Mean CH among healthy Indian adult is 10.57±1.12 mm Hg. CH values are higher among females compared to males. CH values between the two eyes in normal individuals are coherent and positively correlated.","PeriodicalId":91939,"journal":{"name":"Open access journal of ophthalmology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91105360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of ICL is a hole in the optical center of the lens, which facilitates the natural flow of aqueous humor. Among the contraindications for ICL implantation are: Corneal pathologies, cataracts, glaucoma, retinal pathologies such as degenerations or detachments, diabetic retinopathy, patients allergic to collagen, pseudo-exfoliative syndrome, pigment dispersion syndrome, pupillary abnormalities, endothelial count less than 2000 mm2, uveitis, under 20 years of age or with unstable refraction. We present the case of a 24-year-old female patient who came to the clinic for refractive surgery due to high myopia, an ICL -18.00 D implant was proposed in the left eye. In the preoperative examinations: the UBM presented an iris plateau with multiple angle-closing cysts. In the optic nerve OCT she presents a moderate and severe decrease in nerve fibers and the visual field with PHG: outside normal limits, MD: -12.84 dB. After the postoperative period, the patient presented with ocular hypertension that was controlled with antihypertensive, he achieved IOP control a month after the operation, but after a few months postoperatively he presented a low endothelial cell count and an anterior sub capsular cataract, for which it was decided to explant the ICL. Finally, cataract surgery was performed and a monofocal IOL was implanted.","PeriodicalId":91939,"journal":{"name":"Open access journal of ophthalmology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80017995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The case taken for this study involves a young female who underwent a kidney transplant due to chronic kidney disease and presented to us with a unilateral painless loss of vision. It has been reported that prompt administration of steroids may be associated with partial recovery of the eye involved. But otherwise, the prognosis in such cases is usually poor. However, since our patient was post-renal transplant and was already taking immunosuppressive drugs, the fear of impending infections due to severely compromised immunity by both steroids and immunosuppressive therapy was there. Hence, a multidisciplinary approach was applied, involving a nephrologist, a physician, and an anesthetist as well. The recommendation for admission in a hygiene room with a dialysis facility in the hospital, monitoring of immunosuppressive therapy, and pulse-dose steroids to be started under the care of an anesthesiologist was the appropriate management.","PeriodicalId":91939,"journal":{"name":"Open access journal of ophthalmology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77958466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Normal vision is essential for normal physical, mental, psychological development and education. In developing countries like India lower socioeconomic status and lack of proper eye care are responsible for increase in the number of preventable and avoidable causes of blindness as compared to developed countries of the world therefore early detection and treatment of ocular morbidity is important. Aim: To assess the morbidity pattern of ocular disease with respect to age, this will show the trend of ocular morbidities in different age groups. Material and Method: The entire patient in ophthalmology OPD of tertiary eye care center in the past 1 year, were enlisted in this study with their consent. The patients were seen in ophthalmic OPD by ophthalmologist, proper anterior and posterior segment evaluation was done. Patients were divided into different groups according to the age and diagnosis of the disease. Result: Majority of the patients 16441 (46.05%) were found to be in the age group of 31-60 years which shows that common eye diseases are usually linked with age. There was a high prevalence of refractive errors 12098 (33.89%)in the age group till 60 years and cataract 5206 (14.58%) in age group of more than 60 years. Conclusion: It has been observed that majority of patients attending the ophthalmology OPD were between the age group of 31-60 years and beyond and majority were suffering from refractive errors and cataract. Thus this study gives the picture of morbidity pattern of ocular disease in the tertiary health care centre, which is helpful in planning and management of the diseases and denotes that creating awareness among the population is necessary for early diagnosis and treatment of these diseases","PeriodicalId":91939,"journal":{"name":"Open access journal of ophthalmology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80077790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Case Report: A 41-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with complaints of decreased vision in the left eye, periorbital and headache for 2 days. On examination, his visual acuity was full on the right and counting fingers at 2 meters on the left. There was a slight swelling and dimness in the margins of the optic disc on the left, other eye examination findings were normal. The patient was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone at a dose of 1gr/day for three days with the prediagnosis of orbital pseudotumor. However, it was observed that the patient's complaints recurred after methylprednisolone was discontinued. In repeated orbital MRI, at the level of the orbital apex on the left, infiltrating the dural structures, indenting the cavernous sinus, affecting the soft tissue structures adjacent to the nasopharyngeal lumen on the left, are seen. The left optic nerve was found to be slightly thicker than normal, especially at the apex level. For histopathological diagnosis, endoscopic biopsy was performed from the tumor and surrounding tissue from the left maxillary sinus. The biopsy result was reported as adenoid cystic carcinoma. Discussion: The diagnosis of orbital pseudotumor is made in accordance with clinical, radiological and pathological data. Orbital pseudotumor is histopathologically characterized by polymorphous inflammatory cell infiltration accompanied by varying degrees of fibrosis. It is difficult to distinguish an orbital pseudotumor from a true neoplasm. Lymphomas constitute 20% of orbital mass lesions. Our case was initially treated with a preliminary diagnosis of orbital pseudotumor localized in the posterior orbit and responded to steroids. However, lack of complete recovery and recurrence after steroid discontinuation brought to mind other underlying pathologies and directed to further examination and biopsy. As a matter of fact, the patient, who was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma as a result of biopsy, was included in the oncological follow-up and treatment program. It is necessary to be vigilant in terms of malignancy in orbital pseudotumors and not to avoid biopsies in suspected cases.","PeriodicalId":91939,"journal":{"name":"Open access journal of ophthalmology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77979154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite being treatable, the need for knowledge about cataract and its treatment options is a barrier to timely service in developing countries. Improving community knowledge about cataracts can be vital in improving eye care-seeking behavior. Objective: To assess knowledge and associated factors about cataract among adults in Kombolcha, Northeast Ethiopia. Methods: Community-based cross-sectional study was implemented. A stratified multistage sampling technique was used to select 847 study participants aged 18 years or older. A face-to-face interview was applied using a pretested structured questionnaire in the Amharic language. The collected data was entered into Epidemiological Information version 7 and exported to the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20 for analysis. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression with odds ratio were used. Variables with a p-value of less than 0.05 in multivariable logistic regression were considered statistically significant predictors for knowledge about cataract. Results: A total of 771 participants completed the study with a response rate of 91%. Of the total, 86.0% were from urban kebeles, and 50.8% were female. The median age of the participants was 30 years. About 75.6% (583) of individuals were familiar with the word cataract. Overall 537 (69.6%, 95% CI: 66.3- 72.9) had good knowledge about cataract. Higher educational status (AOR: 6.041; 95% CI: 3.106-11.746), being married (AOR: 1.787; 95% CI: 1.174-2.721), history of a previous eye examination (AOR: 1.619; 95% CI: 1.053-2.488) and positive history of cataract (AOR: 10.443; 95% CI: 2.078-52.493) were factors significantly associated with good knowledge about cataract. Conclusion: Considerable proportion of study participants was knowledgeable about cataract. Higher educational status, being married, having a previous eye examination and having a positive history of cataract had a significantly positive association with good knowledge about cataract. Boosting knowledge about cataracts is required for the community segment without formal education.","PeriodicalId":91939,"journal":{"name":"Open access journal of ophthalmology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80005291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
