Anti-oxidants (including vitamins and flavonoids) are an important group of compounds that are necessary to scavenge harmful free radicals. As a result of the universally functioning cult of beauty, cosmetics manufacturers increasingly often add antioxidants to slow the aging process of the skin. In beauty salons, these preparations are used during cosmetics treatments to facilitate the penetration of active ingredients into the skin, including mesotherapy, iontophoresis, or sonophoresis. Researchers, on the other hand, are looking for new rich sources of antioxidants and for more effective methods of their isolation. Raw materials from common hazel (Corylus avellana L.) are characterized by a very high antioxidant potential, but they are relatively rarely used in the production of any cosmetic preparations. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the hazel vegetation period as well as extraction conditions on the antioxidative activity of alcoholic extracts of selected parts of Corylus avellana L. Materials and methods: Ultrasound-assisted extraction was applied to obtain alcoholic extracts from male inflorescences and common hazel leaves in different vegetation phases. Ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and n-propanol at concentrations of 40%, 70%, or 96/99% were applied as extractants. The antioxi-dative potential was assessed using the DPPH and ABTS methods. Absorbance measurements were made using a spectrophotometer. Results and conclusions: All the tested raw materials from Corylus avellana L. were characterized by a very high antioxidant activity. The highest scavenging capacity of free radicals was observed for dried leaves before and during fruiting determined using the DPPH and ABTS methods. The lowest activities were obtained in extracts in propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol from dried leaves during fruiting and male inflorescences. The results confirm the high content of antioxidants in the studied plant and suggest that raw materials derived from common hazel may be used in the production of cosmetics.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"56 - 66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42858730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between 60 professional musicians, who were divided into 3 groups: cellists, violinists, and musicians playing wind instruments. Pain intensity was assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS). The respondents also assessed the frequency of musculoskeletal disorders, the location of pain, the number of hours of playing the instrument per week, and the playing experience in years. In addition, body weight and height were measured and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Results: Musculoskeletal disorders occurred among 83.33% of musicians, including: cellists (n = 20; 100%), violinists (n = 18; 90%), and musicians playing wind instruments (n = 12; 60%). The pain was more often localised in the lumbar and cervical spine, and less frequently in the upper and lower limbs. Cellists and violinists experience the most intense pain (appropriately Me = 4.50, IQR = 4.00 and Me = 5.00, IQR = 3.50) and of greater frequency (appropriately Me = 3.00, IQR = 2.00 and Me = 3.00, IQR = 6.00) in contrast to musicians who play wind instruments (Me = 1.00, IQR = 2.00); p < 0.01. Conclusions: Musculoskeletal pain is very common among musicians, especially among string players. There is a need for greater awareness and knowledge among musicians of strategies to prevent pain and overload. Playing stringed instruments, including many hours of practice per week and a longer experience in playing the instrument, is conducive to greater intensity and frequency of pain in the musculoskeletal system.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"39 - 46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49143466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, attempts are being made to identify sex in early pregnancy. The method of fetal sex determination based on cytogenetic evaluation of fetal cells isolated from maternal blood and free fetal DNA detectable in pregnant women’s blood, developed in recent years, requires a specialised laboratory. In view of these conditions, it seems obvious and necessary to search for alternative methods of fetal sex determination at the earliest possible stage of pregnancy. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the sex of the fetus in the I trimester of pregnancy. Materials and methods: The initial study included 187 pregnant women who were between 5–10 weeks of gestation (model 1) and the actual study included 240 subjects who were between 5–13 weeks of singleton pregnancy (model 2). A logistic regression model was used to assess the probability of fetal sex based on crown-rump length (CRL), gestational sac volume (GSV), and gestational age. Results: The study indicates that the sex of the fetus can be predicted with a high probability from ultrasound earlier than previously thought. Conclusions: After 7 weeks of gestation, differences in the size of male and female fetuses start to become apparent. Male fetuses have on average higher CRL and GSV than female fetuses. This allows predicting male sex with a significantly higher probability.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"22 ","pages":"9 - 14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41280591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we report the complication of ciliary body hernias resulting from high intraocular pressure in the afflicted eye combined with secondary glaucoma after vitrectomy due to retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a condition previously not described in the literature (PubMed or Google Scholar from 2014–2022). Material and methods: The infant underwent photocoagulation treatment twice due to ROP due to ROP stage 4/5. At 4th months of life, the baby underwent posterior vitrectomy with lensectomy, with the final injection of sodium hyaluronate to the vitreous chamber. The child did not suffer from any autoimmune diseases or keratitis. The only risk factors included photocoagulation and vitrectomy with the reconstruction of both the anterior chambers and the pupil. Results: Following posterior vitrectomy, the child manifested multiple complications, such as hernia of the ciliary body, secondary glaucoma, leucoma, hemorrhage to the anterior eye chamber, keratomalacia, and advanced keratopathy. Autoimmune diseases, avitaminosis, the inflammatory of the cornea (of no iatrogenic etiology) and viral or bacterial infections were excluded. Nevertheless, positive bacterial cultures from natural body orifices obtained in routine examinations during hospitalization could cause a severe course of ROP as well as complicated outcomes of surgical treatment. Conclusions: Vitrectomy is the last resort therapeutic option (ROP stage 4A, 4B, 5), as it might result in keratopathy, cataract, glaucoma, strabismus, or severe hyperopia. Due to severe damage to the eye structures that may occur after surgical vitrectomy in premature infants in the course of ROP, this technique should only be used by experienced vitrectomists with great care and caution, especially in extremely low-birthweight children.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"59 - 63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49050069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Elevated levels of coagulation parameters are their most significant risk factors and occasionally constitute a contraindication for emergent surgery. Our study addresses the subject of the aftermath of postponing the cauda equina decompression. In this report, we describe a case of a 72-year-old obese man who presented with sharp iliolumbar pain and progressive paraparesis. Clinical examination revealed bilaterally decreased deep tendon reflexes, positive straight leg raise sign on both sides, dysaesthesia, and urinary incontinence. Imaging studies showed a mass filling almost the entire spinal canal at the L3/4 level. The surgery had to be postponed due to the excessively high international normalized ratio. The coagulation system was stabilized on the 5th day of hospitalization, hence the L2-L3-L4 laminectomy was performed. A subdural hematoma was visualized after exposing the meningeal sac. After thorough removal of the lesion and subsequent neurorehabilitation, the patient’s neurological functions improved; however, urinary incontinence symptoms remained. Conclusions: Our unique case report shows potential problems with decision-making regarding the timing of the surgery. Although early decompression is characterized by the best outcome, surgeons are obliged to take into account several factors such as dysregulated coagulation system and if necessary, delay the surgery for the benefit of the patient.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"47 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43651827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Platelets which are “labelled” by autoantibodies are recognized and destroyed first of all in the spleen, and, therefore, splenectomy is one of the treatment options, particularly in cases refractory to conservative treatment. The objective of this study was to determine long-term outcomes of splenectomy in the treatment of IT in adult patients. Materials and methods: Eleven patients, 7 men and 4 women with a mean age of 43 years and IT lasting 30 months on average underwent splenectomy. Indication to surgery was failed conservative steroid therapy in all patients. Outcomes of surgery were assessed in 9 patients on average 5 years following the surgery. Results: In all patients, good response to the treatment was obtained (remission). None of the patients continued therapy against the disease and all had platelet count at the follow-up higher than 100 G/L. No serious complications were observed. Conclusion: Splenectomy is an effective and relatively safe, second-line treatment of IT, in cases in which conservative therapy fails.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":" ","pages":"5 - 8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48164202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The disease begins in childhood and causes rapid aging. Affected children usually appear normal at birth and in early infancy, but then grow more slowly than other children and do not gain weight at the expected rate. They develop a distinctive facial appearance, including prominent eyes, a thin nose with a curved tip, thin lips, a small chin and protruding ears. Hutchinson–Gilford progeria syndrome also causes hair loss, premature skin aging, joint abnormalities and loss of fat under the skin. This condition does not affect intellectual development or the development of motor skills such as sitting, standing and walking. It affects 1 in 4 million children worldwide and so far 150 cases have been reported, mostly boys. The average survival is 15 years. In recent years, there has been significant progress in the understanding of the molecular causes of this rare condition, which contributes to the development of new treatments for this rare condition, to the understanding of the causes of physiological aging in humans and may result in the development of new methods to slow this process.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"42 - 46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44587132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to determine the spatial relationship of the root apices of mandibular teeth in relation to the mandibular canal. Materials and methods: On the frontal plane of 300 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, the spatial mutual position and measurements of the vertical and horizontal distance between the tooth root apices and the mandibular canal were determined. Results: For 23 root types out of 26, the roots of the mandibular teeth were found to exhibit a buccal orientation. The exceptions were the mesial roots of the 1st molars and the mesio-buccal roots of the 2nd molars on the right side, which showed a lingual orientation. The distances were measured for 2053 roots. For the teeth on the left side, the mean measurements ranged 0.23–3.77 mm for buccal roots, and the measurement was 0.21 mm for roots located lingually. For the teeth on the right side, the mean measurements ranged 0.38–2.93 mm for buccal rootsand 0.11–0.32 mm for lingual roots. Conclusions: The predominantly buccal orientation of the root apices of the mandibular teeth in relation to the mandibular canal was demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"15 - 19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45113724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many factors are associated with the development of ASD, including genetic and environmental factors such as nutritional deficiencies, infections, immune system dysfunctions, and allergies. The human gut microbiome is composed of communities of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that influence the central nervous system (CNS). Dysbiosis is defined as an imbalance or maladaptation in the gut microbial community which favors many pathological states and may be associated with some diseases. The changes in microbiota composition in children with ASD may contribute to both gastrointestinal and CNS symptoms. The disorders of the gut-brain axis signaling appear to affect neuropsychiatric disorders, including autism and ASD. The prevention and treatment of dysbiosis in ASD involves modification of the gut microbiome using the supplementation with probiotics – a live active culture.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"34 - 41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43175682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
