Many plant extracts are a valuable source of natural antioxidants that can be used in the production of cosmetics and cosmetology. Syringa vulgaris L. is a plant that contains flavonoids, one of the most important groups of natural compounds that eliminate free radicals. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the anti-oxidant activity of the extracts prepared from selected S. vulgaris L. parts. We analyzed the influence of the solvent and the extraction time on the antioxidant potential of extracts. Materials and methods: Alcoholic extracts from selected parts of S. vulgaris L. were prepared by ultrasound-assisted extraction, for 15, 30, and 60 min, and their antioxidant activity was evaluated. The analysis of the antioxidant potential was performed by 2,2-diphenyl--1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline--6-sulfonic acid) – ABTS methods using a spectrophotometer. The raw material used to prepare extracts comprised dried leaves and flowers harvested during flowering and dried fruits harvested during fruiting. The solvents applied were methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, and n-propanol at concentrations of 40%, 70%, and 100%. Results: The highest mean antioxidant activity evaluated using the ABTS method was 96.4% radical scavenging activity (RSA) for the leaf extract of S. vulgaris L., prepared in 70% methanol for 15 min. The highest antioxidant potential of the leaf extract determined using the DPPH method was 87.9% for concentrated ethanol applied for the same time. The lowest antioxidant activity was 1.36% RSA in a fruit extract extracted for 30 min, prepared in 99% n-propanol, determined by the ABTS method, and 6.3% RSA as evaluated using the DPPH method. The antioxidant potential was markedly lower for the fruit extracts. Conclusions: The best antioxidant properties were demonstrated by the extracts made from the leaves of S. vulgaris evaluated using both methods. The lowest results were obtained for fruit extracts. The type of extractant used and the duration of the ultrasonically assisted extraction affected the ability of the obtained extracts to neutralize free radicals. The results show that S. vulgaris is a valuable source of antioxidants, especially its leaves and flowers.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"64 - 74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48665568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first group includes diet, physical activity, body position, medicines, and stimulants. These are the most important factors because here the patient can consciously influence the laboratory results. Second group are the patient-independent factors such as gender, population, age, and pregnancy are beyond the control of the patient. The last category includes conditions such as hemolysis, lipemia, and hyperbilirubinemia. They can alter the results of coagulation tests and other biochemistry studies. Hence, clots in a specimen and the presence of hemolysis and the most common factors account for 80% of pre-analytical phase laboratory errors. It is absolutely necessary to implement procedures for monitoring and assessing pre-laboratory error as well as medical staff training regarding the collection, storage, and transport of samples.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"23 - 33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42105324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and methods: Clinical presentation of a 1-year-old child with diagnosed mesodermal disgenesis of the cornea in both eyes, with concomitant microphthalmos, optic nerve hypoplasia, and persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in the left eye, treated with epikeratoprosthesis. Aniridia and buphthalmos of the right eye. Results: Following the thorough diagnostic process of microphthalmos, the deletion PAX6 gene was confirmed in mother of a child. During pregnancy, the mother was suffering from hypothyroidism as well. Conclusions: Continous ophthalmic screening in newborns and infants are of utmost importance in the early detection of congenital malformations of an eyeball. Despite being fairly common in comparison to other innate eyeball anomalies, microphthalmos remains a challenge in successful treatment focused on the improvement of vision. Due to the common co-occurrence of microphthalmos or anophthalmos and craniofacial abnormalities or axial skeleton defects, a crucial role is played by the cooperation between ophthalmologists and other pediatric specialists, including geneticists.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"54 - 58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44644653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After World War II, the main place responsible for tuberculosis management was the National Tuberculosis Sanatorium, known today as Specialist Hospital in Szczecin – Zdunowo. Initially, treatment involved a high-calorie diet, the use of copper or gold salts, tuberculin injections, light therapy, and appropriate environmental conditions. However, positive results had rarely been achieved before the introduction of antibiotics in tuberculosis treatment in the mid-20th century. Interestingly, the prevalence of tuberculosis in West Pomerania in Poland has been significantly lower compared with national figures.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"20 - 22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44186078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is not as easy, however, to quantify these features. Maintaining objectivity is desired in clinical practice, and is particularly important in research studies. Complex regional pain syndrome causes a functional impairment of the affected extremities and limits daily living activity in the patients. An objective measurement of these limitations is also desired. In this paper we present methods used in contemporary research on CRPS, attempting to objectivize features that are primarily subjective, such as pain and level of impairment. The methods of assessment of these variables are useful in studies on the impact of the disease on patient functioning in daily living. They are also important in a complex assessment of the results of treatment of the condition.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"30 - 35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49483210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the hand, they frequently localize in the distal phalanges and under the nail plate. Most tumours are symptomatic with characteristic features such as spontaneous pain at the end of the digit exacerbated at exposure to the cold, and trigger point tenderness. This study presents results of the operative treatment of 18 patients, 12 women and 6 men, at a mean age of 38 years with glomus tumours in the hand. Most of them (n = 16) were localized in the distal phalanges, 8 of which were subungual. The follow-up assessment was performed in the form of a phone interview at a mean of 4.2 years following surgery. All patients declared pain relief almost immediately after the tumour’s resection. Problems reported by the patients at the follow-up were inaesthetic scars, occasional pain in the operated digit at weather changes, and mild tenderness at the operation site. Three cases of recurrence were noted. These results show that operative treatment of glomus tumours is effective, provides fast relief of troublesome symptoms and is associated with a moderate risk of recurrence.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"1 - 4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42400739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of Pb on the epididymis, an organ in which spermatozoa reach maturity and acquire the ability to fertilize an egg. In particular, it was investigated whether low blood Pb levels could adversely affect the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance in rat epididymides. Materials and methods: The intensity of oxidative stress was measured by changes in lipid peroxidation (by chemiluminiscence method), as well as in protein expression and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Additionally, it was investigated whether the toxic effects of Pb could be alleviated by the simultaneous administration of the antioxidants – tocopherol (vitamin E) or its water-soluble counterpart Trolox. Results: Chronic exposure to Pb resulted in increased lipid peroxidation in the epididymis (manifested by a marked intensification in chemiluminescence from the caput and cauda epididymis). Significantly, when Pb-treated rats were also supplemented with Trolox or tocopherol, the increase in chemiluminiscence intensity was significantly lower, which indicated the beneficial effect of these antioxidants on reduction of Pb-induced oxidative stress. However, a direct beneficial effect of supplementation on the activity and expression of SOD and CAT was not demonstrated. The activity and expression of SOD was not affected by exposure to Pb or to simultaneous administration of antioxidants. The use of tocopherol and Trolox had also no beneficial effect on the Pb-induced reduction in the activity and expression of CAT. Conclusions: The environmental Pb-exposure leading to metal accumulation in whole blood at concentrations below the “threshold level” (5 μg/dL) may cause disruption in the prooxidant/antioxidant balance in rat epididymides containing epididymal spermatozoa.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"9 - 19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45854443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to assess the amount of time spent daily in front of a mobile phone and computer/laptop, the body posture while using these devices, and the occurrence of pain during usage. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of first-year students of engineering and IT at 2 universities in Kielce. The research was carried out using the self-constructed questionnaire technique. The questionnaire was divided into 3 parts: I. personal data; II. mobile phone use; III. desktop computer/ laptop use. The survey concerned mainly the amount of time spent in front of electronic devices, posture, as well as the scale of pain while using the above-mentioned devices. Results: The study involved 135 people (96 men – 71% and 39 women – 29%) aged 19–30 years (±21 years). The use of electronic devices up to about 3 h a day was the most frequent response – 56% of all responses for a mobile phone uses and 62% for a computer/laptop use. The percentage of people who devoted more than 5 h a day to mobile phones as well as using computers over 6 h a day was 4%. The analysis showed that when using the electronic devices, pain was reported for almost every area of the body. Body position while standing and sitting was described in various variants of answers indicated by respondents when using electronic devices. Conclusions: The implementation of correct health-related habits regarding the adoption of the correct body position from an early age results in avoiding pain in the future. Spending too much time on the computer or mobile phone contributes to the occurrence of pain in the study group.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"54 - 60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43868710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
