Specifically, the paper aims at identifying the transmission channels through which wage spillovers from foreign direct investment occur as well as the impact of technology gap and firm size on the behaviour of the spillover transmission channels. Employing panel data obtained from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys covering the period 2007–2018 and using fixed effects and Two-Step System GMM, we analyzed both horizontal and vertical spillover channels for wage spillovers. Findings from estimations based on all domestic firms indicated that there were no significant wage spillovers from FDI. However, when the technology gap was considered, domestic firms with low technology gaps with foreign-owned firms showed statistically significant positive wage spillovers via backward linkage, demonstration effects, and labour mobility channels and statistically significant negative spillovers via the competition effects channel. Finally, the results showed that firm size had no impact on the behaviour of various wage spillover transmission channels examined.

Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the environmental and social impacts, as well as the best production practices on the properties that adopted the Certifica Minas Café certification program. The research sampled 46 certified properties, which were evaluated in the years 2013 and 2015, based on the same criteria used in the official audits of the program. The results demonstrate that certified properties tend to show significant improvements in the criteria for property management and capacity building of rural workers. On the other hand, certification adoption did not show significant changes in traceability and environmental responsibility despite the reduction of agrochemical pollution found on certified farms. The research also pointed out the challenges faced by program managers. However, we affirm that the Minas Gerais certification program is helpful, but adjustments are necessary to meet the objectives of sustainable coffee production.

In municipalities of developing countries like Ghana, public outcry over the wrong location of waste dumpsites and poor public interest in waste management has called for this study to understand how public participation contributes to efficiency in solid waste management. For those living close to waste dump sites, conditions including odour and smoke pollution are believed to be avoidable when the public participates in decision making on the location of waste dump sites. This study investigated challenges facing Nkanfoa community regarding their involvement in waste management decision making. A mixed method approach was used to gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges associated with public participation in solid waste management. The findings showed that the community members feel their concerns are not factored into the decision making process of the assembly as such a lack of trust between them and the municipal assembly. Also, there is the perception that political office holders interfere in public meetings and are not accountable to citizens hence the public apathy towards collective waste management decision making and their unwillingness to pay for waste services. The study concludes that for community participation in waste management to be effective, there should be online platforms for verification of the extent to which assemblies engage the public in collective decision making and this should be one criteria for allocating more common funds to district assemblies that perform well on this indicator.

Cocoa agroforestry is a farming practice that combines cocoa cultivation with tree planting. It is an essential approach to mitigate the effects of climate change, reduce forest loss, and alleviate poverty; however, its adoption is not widespread within Ghanaian farming communities. The study used a mixed-method approach, including a semi-structured questionnaire (n = 150), interviews, and focus group discussions to gather data. The results of the study suggest that farmers’ willingness to integrate tree species on their cocoa farms is not significantly influenced by factors such as gender, age, level of education, or land ownership. Terminalia superba, Khaya spp., and Milicia excelsa were the more common non-cocoa trees found, and farmers demonstrated good knowledge and understanding of cocoa agroforestry. The main motivation for farmers to plant trees was to build climate resilience, supplement their income, improve food security, and restore degraded lands. However, the main barriers to adopting cocoa agroforestry, as identified by farmers, were a lack of financial support, high transportation costs for seedlings, and insufficient technical support and awareness. The study recommends that farmers raise cocoa seedlings on their farms and receive incentives such as cash, inputs, and a pension scheme to encourage greater adoption of cocoa agroforestry as a REDD+ strategy at Ghana’s cocoa-growing communities.

Educational institutions are instruments used to transform society. However, it is harmless to the economic interests of those with control and power, which impose labels and goals to be achieved. The educational process is shaped by the mantra of competitiveness and non-contextualized innovations within parameters of uncertainty, complexity, and socio-environmental risk. This essay proposes that when politics has signs of social, economic, and ecological exclusion, the School can become a space that catalyzes lifestyles that dignify society and ecosystems. It is concluded that the Schools, especially the public ones, must review in depth its social contract and stop teaching how to learn to live in an unfair world. Finally, the author used a reflexive method and a bibliography review in this essay.

To reduce this vulnerability of the agricultural sector, the use of natural sources such as agrominerals, also known as rock dust, is gaining ground. The objective of this study was to characterize and evaluate a new source of natural potassium, extracted from a deposit located in the Brazilian Midwest, through geological characterization and agronomic evaluation through yield tests, soil and foliar potassium content. The tests were conducted in a greenhouse with seven treatments, two soil types and four replications, with millet, soybeans and beans in succession to evaluate the residual effect of the product. The agromineral was classified as a nepheline syenite saprolite with an average K2O content of 11.6%. The effects of the agromineral were promising, especially in the medium term. In the case of beans, at the standard dose of 60 K2O, yields in clay soils were 3.6 Mg ha-1 higher than in the 60 KCl treatment, which obtained only 2.3 Mg ha-1, probably due to absorption or leaching losses, since the effect evaluated was residual in nature. For all the crops evaluated, the agromineral showed an increase in potassium levels in both the soil and the leaves compared to the control group, indicating that it is a potential alternative to gradually reduce the use of traditional chemical fertilizers. Field trials are recommended to validate these benefits, taking into account more realistic environmental variations.

Urban sustainable development frameworks have become common to manage these challenges. However, new frameworks are required as existing global frameworks are not sufficient to meet current challenges nor do they consider future requirements in developing countries. These frameworks currently focus on planning and engineering aspects and lack the flexibility to incorporate local issues factoring in views of stakeholders. Examples of this are issues such as political instability, degradation of public services and utilities and damage to the infrastructure and economic deterioration caused by conflict. \u0000 \u0000This paper reviews and analyses existing sustainable urban development frameworks, it identifies that they have focused on urban sustainable development assessment tools by electing several urban sustainable development factors with rating systems. \u0000 \u0000Through this review, this paper finds several strategies have not been addressed in previous research related to locality specific issues. These include (a) consideration of the views of the public, (b) future urban planning requirements, (c) future domestic property requirements of occupants, and (d) achieving a reduction in domestic energy consumption. \u0000 \u0000Thus, this paper proposes that future frameworks should be designed based on considering stakeholder feedback, experts’ consultation, and validation stage. This is a challenging proposition, however it does, provide significant advantages in highlighting and addressing the community’s priorities for solving problems in the local context, experts’ views, in order to combatting the gaps found between decision-maker’s opinions and public priorities.

Particularly in Brazil, which has an extensive territorial area and native vegetation, emission of greenhouse gases is responsible for harmful socio-environmental effects both externally and internally to the country. Thereby, this study aimed to characterize the GHG in Brazil and identify which sustainable factors influence GHG emissions and how these factors correlate with the variations in temperature between 1990 and 2022. For that, multiple linear regression models were used to develop the regression model and canonical correlation analysis to verify how the adjusted factors behaved with the temperature in this period. The results of this study show that the four adjusted indicators are of economic origin and closely related to the type of economic production in Brazil. Each indicator has a similar correlation with temperature variations. This GHG profile helps public decision makers gain an overview, particularly in relation to the drastic temperature changes and current weather conditions. It is expected that this work will have theoretical implications for a new line of research to be deepened, which can develop practices that allow public managers to plan how to reduce the greenhouse gases indicators analyzed in this research. Therefore this study can contribute as a research tool in the control of greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil.

FAO, in its 2020 report on the state of the world's forests, indicates that forest coverage in Haiti represents 12.6% of its territory; thus, this lack in wooded areas increases its vulnerability to natural disasters. To try recovering in losses of forest coverage and biodiversity at the local level, the organization of farmers in Vallue a rural area of Petit-Goâve (a city in the western department), has mobilized its members, taped to its resources and embarked into reforestation projects while helping to improve habitat in the village. This research analyzes the relationship among biodiversity resources in reforestation projects involving native and exotic species, habitat and landscape transformation in an environment that is vulnerable to natural disasters with the goal to seek for solutions that can benefit rural communities. A field investigation is conducted with 156 families who live in the village and a series of satellite images are analyzed to evaluate the percentage of forest coverage. The results obtained indicate habitats are destroyed by disasters that regularly hit the region; reforestation projects that include exotic species do not have adverse effects on native ones and wooded areas are improved in the village of Vallue. Furthermore, the landscape retains a visual quality that can facilitate the valorization of the territory. It is proposed that reforestation projects with plants that resist to high winds to be used and develop a bio-reactive habitat that may reduce the vulnerability of rural families living in areas too often struck by hurricanes.
