The main objective of this research was to establish the planning status and changes in the spatial coverage of settlements, unbuilt areas, number of buildings, building densities and building consolidation levels in Dar es Salaam City between 2007 and 2017. The study deployed a literature review, remote sensing imagery and field verification. The study revealed firstly, that there are three main categories of planning status, two of which are well documented, that is planned and unplanned settlements, and unbuilt areas which are not extensively documented. Between 2012 and 2017, the spatial extent of planned areas remained more or the same, unplanned areas increased and unbuilt-up areas decreased. The city had a total of 367,278 buildings in 2007 and 675,644 in 2017 with an annual growth rate of 8%. The average building density for Dar es Salaam City in 2017 was 4.2 and the highest building density in unplanned areas was 48 buildings/ha while in planned areas, was 22 buildings/ha. The study recommends that concerted efforts are needed to control urban sprawl.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":"31 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135876132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, this study aimed to determine the spatial and temporal influence of vegetation indices on industrial tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) yield. The research was conducted at Barcelos Farm in Anápolis, GO, covering a 55-hectare area. A sampling grid of 61-point pairs, spaced at 90 x 90 meters, was established using a GPS receiver. Vegetation indices were characterized by measuring the Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) index, foliar nitrogen content through the Kjeldahl method, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using both a spectroradiometer and satellite imagery. Industrial tomato yield was assessed during harvest. Through the results, it was observed that temporal variability between vegetation indices and actual foliar nitrogen content exhibited a significant and positive correlation with industrial tomato productivity, particularly during the flowering stage. However, temporal variability between vegetation indices and foliar nitrogen content displayed low correlation across the mapped areas over time. Determining foliar nitrogen content and vegetation indices during the flowering stage is recommended for the industrial tomato crop. The relationship between ground-based remote sensing NDVI and orbital NDVI displayed a 55% positive correlation during the flowering stage.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":"62 35","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135815173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While it has long been understood that economic diversification is needed to support a more stable economic base and a higher standard of living, this has been challenging in Kuwait and other GCC countries. The petroleum revenues of Kuwait cannot last forever, however public and private sector industry is nearly entirely dependent on this source of revenue. Various planning and projects have been undertaken as a means of achieving some measure of economic diversification. This paper undertakes an integrative review to synthesizing the measures undertaken in Kuwait towards the aim of economic diversification and evaluation of those projects, considering current evidence and frameworks. The study found that one area where the economic future needs of Kuwait and the cultural sensibility align is in small business ownership, and this in combination with the latent and undercapitalized, well-educated labor force presents many opportunities for growth, diversification, and innovation by providing for new opportunities for Kuwaiti citizens in Kuwait.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":"22 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135219759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is necessary to determine comparative reference standards, aiming to assist in the interpretation of results obtained in the field and in making decisions about the management to be adopted. The study aimed to propose levels of interpretation of the SPAD index in oregano leaves based on the yield of the crop. The experiment was conducted in protected environment, randomized blocks design was adopted with four replications in 6 x 4 factorial scheme: six levels of water replacement (60, 70, 80, 90, 100, and 110% of the crop evapotranspiration-ETc) and four doses of bokashi (0, 100, 200, and 300 g m-2). For analysis, the data were subjected to variance analysis, multivariate analysis, regression and correlation. Productive management (water replacement and bokashi dose) influences the SPAD index response. Through mathematical analysis of the relationship between SPAD index and relative yield, the sufficiency ranges based on the SPAD index were determined in very low (<37) low (37-44), medium (44-46) and high (>46). The proposed classification of the sufficiency range for the SPAD index allows advances in the productive management of the oregano crop.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135884227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the excessive consumption of post-modern society has contributed to the increase in residues generation, especially in urban centers and, allied to this, the precarious Brazilian scenario regarding the management and logistics of disposal and treatment of residues, ending up trigger great harm in the environmental and socio-economic context. The main objective of this research was to analyze the current context regarding the management of urban solid residues in the city of Sobral-Ce, considering from the adequacy to PNRS, socio-environmental impacts associated with in appropriate residue disposal, as well as measures implemented by the city hall in mitigation of such impacts. The methodology used was descriptive and exploratory research. The results indicate that, despite the existence of public policies (in the initial phase) aimed at the correct disposal of solid residues in the city of Sobral, it was possible to verify during the field research that, in almost all neighborhoods of the city, there is inadequate accumulation of residues. Therefore, it is necessary, even if in the implementation phase, the elaboration of the integrated plans is really effective, as well as measures implemented by the city hall in the mitigation of such impacts.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135803224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this work was to investigate the phytosociological composition of weeds in intercropped bean and castor hybrids adapted to mechanized harvesting, as well as in monoculture, involving genetic materials with different plant architectures. The design was randomized blocks, with four replications, and the treatments consisted of three bean cultivars with different growth habits and types (BRS Realce; BRS Esteio; Pérola), cultivated in an intercropped system with two small castor hybrids (Agima and Tamar), and the respective monoculture systems of the bean and castor hýbrids. Weed evaluation was performed 25 days after crop emergence. The bean growth habits and the size of castor hybrids directly affect the weed community, in both systems. Cenchrus echinatus and Alternanthera tenella species showed predominance in intercropping and monoculture conditions. The common bean monoculture and castor hybrids system, in general, provide greater problems with weeds compared to their respective monocultures, especially the Poaceae family. The weed species similarity indexes were higher than 75%.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136209467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Addressing the challenges cocoa farmers face and developing sustainable solutions is paramount, as their low-income status may lead to a shift to alternative cash crops, surrendering lands for illegal mining activities (affecting the environment negatively), and a decline in the cocoa bean supply. Existing literature has explored the limited value capture of cocoa farmers. However, it needs to fully elucidate the complex interplay between local and international interests that undermine efforts to improve farmers' livelihoods. This study uses the Sustainable Livelihood Framework and the Global Production Network to assess these dynamics. The analysis uncovers significant obstacles smallholder farmers face in achieving sustainable incomes, including power imbalances and embeddedness within firm networks. Some policy recommendations, including the de-commodification of Cocoa beans, are proposed.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":"183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135259527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within this space, biogas production and use are one choice considered part of a regional sustainable transition. The valuation of different options has become a recurrent and vital activity in connection with strategic energy decisions in the public sector. However, capturing the diverse benefits of biogas is challenging. This study scrutinises the socially and politically bounded practice that (re)produces value(s) by examining the valuation practices related to biogas performed by regional and national actors in Sweden. It finds that although the valuation practice has a degree of formality, it still reflects local needs and specific contexts. A wide range of benefits undergoes a translation process to produce value(s) using qualitative and quantitative rationalities. Still, there is tension between the desire to prioritise quantitative methods while at the same time acknowledging that some benefits are too difficult to quantify. This paper contributes to the literature on the valuation of non-market objects by highlighting the connections between established scientific and economic procedures and performative processes and the importance of rejecting a binary view of quantification and qualification.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136071838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, poor areas and slums suffer from limited educational opportunities and a lack of quality education due to various factors. Many initiatives have been implemented to improve education in public schools. Among these initiatives is the continuing education program of the Ethics Kiosk Project, which is implemented by the Mishkat Nour Foundation in many Egyptian governorates. The continuing education program seeks to solve education problems in slums, specifically for children from 3 to 15 years old. This has been achieved by applying comprehensive and distinctive curricula such as the Cambridge Curriculum, providing support to public schools through the Public Schools Digital Ethics Kiosk System - ERP, implementing foundational curricula, qualifying and training teachers and conducting free remedial lessons in public schools. The continuing education program is the first of its kind in Egypt, which serves slums and poor areas, as hundreds of students, teachers, schools and centers have benefited from it. The researcher aimed to highlight these benefits. The study depends on a qualitative research method as a questionnaire and statistical methods including Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Pearson correlation coefficient and one-sample T-test. Findings revealed several positive impacts of the Cambridge curriculum application, including the quality of education, empowering teachers, strengthening the partnership between schools and families and a significant reduction in dropout rates which indicates the potential of the distinguished Curricula to address educational challenges and achieve sustainable development in slums.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46323827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
