Yet, the application cost for combined modeling in terms of learning and modeling efforts generally remains on high order, thus making combined modeling features largely underutilized by or inaccessible to modelers who are domain experts instead of simulation specialists. In this research, we propose a simplified approach to \"discretize\" the continuous elements in combined modeling by using a batch-based modeling strategy with insignificant loss of accuracy. Each batch denotes the amount of material handled by a resource unit in the discrete system, which is further processed by a plant with continuous characteristics. A practical mining case study is presented to illustrate and verify our approach. The simulation model assisted the mining company in configuring the processes and optimizing the resource allocation and utilization in its mining operations.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. The research aims to demonstrate that it is possible, for embodied software agents, to develop first-person meanings for environmental perturbations. According to the proposed approach, first-person meanings will be created through the agent centrifugal development. We argue that centrifugally developed agents, which create first-person meanings for environmental perturbations, will perform better in identified classes of tasks. They will also contribute to advance the state of the art regarding embodiment, particularly with respect to the grounding problem. For traditional AI, the mind is a symbol processing system that can exist without the body or act in an independent way. Although traditional approaches have successfully solved several problems, they are trapped in the grounding problem. Embodied cognition approach departs from the dominant paradigm by focusing on cognition as an embodied situated activity. Organismic embodiment supporters argue that the systems development method (centrifugally versus centripetally) is decisive to the system autonomy and, thereby, to their cognitive abilities. This research will use models of cellular division and evolution from cellular biology and will propose processes, through which meaning grounding can be achieved as an emergent property of centrifugally developed agents.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. Current approaches examine promoter sequences for particular features, such as the presence of binding sites for a transcriptional regulator, and identify recurrent relationships among these features termed network motifs. To define the expression dynamics of a group of genes, the strength of the connections in a network must be specified, and these are determined by the cis-promoter features participating in the regulation. Approaches that homogenize features among promoters (e.g., relying on consensuses to describe the various promoter features) and even across species hamper the discovery of the key differences that distinguish promoters that are co-regulated by the same transcriptional regulator. Thus, we have developed a an approach based on fuzzy logic expressions to analyze proteobacterial genomes for promoter features that is specifically designed to account for the variability in sequence, location and topology intrinsic to differential gene expression. We applied our method to characterize network motifs controlled by the PhoP/PhoQ regulatory system of Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. We identify key features that that enable the PhoP protein to produce differential regulation in target genes, reflecting distinct kinetic patterns even for the same type of network motif. These findings could not have been uncovered just by inspecting network architecture. We show that the same approach can be generalized to model other regulatory systems.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. The present work wants to show how the use of sophisticated techniques of simulation allows to prevent natural phenomena, responsible of serious damages to persons and things. We have considered the residential and commercial district of a city of southern Italy, built in the area of an old riverbed of outflow of raining waters. However, the main problem is how to build an agent-based model for traffic simulation. This research presents an urban traffic information intelligent control model, which adopts a multi-agents coordination approach for urban traffic information control to coordinate the traffic network. In this paper, we propose a new traffic information intelligent control hybrid model based on multi-agent system that performs the basic interface, planning and supports services for managing different types of demand responsive transportation. In this research, we expose the main features and the behaviors exhibited of the multi-agent system. Based on this model, a simplified multi-agent traffic information control system can be developed that is effective for reducing traffic congestion and air pollution.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. It can reduce PLC development time and the errors that generally occur when PLC programs are manually programmed. For this purpose, we used Timed-MPSG to model the formal specification of the targeted shop floor controller system, after that, the graphical representation of Timed-MPSG is converted to the textual format automatically. Thereafter, the textural structure of Timed-MPSG translated into input code for model checker (SMV) - for the purpose of formal verification. Although, the simulation can be used to verify the written code, however, the use of formal methods for verification is more desirable to validate the state model for hidden errors. After verifying the model against specified properties, written in temporal logic, finally, generation of programmable logic controller code by using one-to-one mapping technique. The similarity in the hierarchical and modular architecture of Timed-MPSG, SMV and IEC standard PLC program, made it convenient to transform from one form to another as described in our proposed method. Furthermore, an illustration of methodology to PLC design and development is explained with a suitable example.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. This paper discusses a test and development environment using Discrete Event System Specification Modeling Language (DEVSML) and the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) framework. The underlying DEVS Modeling Language is built on XML and provides model interoperability among DEVS models hosted at remote network addresses. We describe the client application that communicates with multiple servers hosting DEVS Simulation services and the underlying SOADEVS framework. We show how SOADEVS is positioned to address the need for a DoD Architecture Framework, DoDAF-based net-centric paradigm for test and evaluation at the system-of-systems and enterprise systems levels. The dynamic structure is a salient supplementary of the Real-Time DEVS-based experimental environment we proposed before. By adapting the system organization to the changing internal/external environments while the systems are in progress, the functionality of the experimental environment is improved greatly. Consequently, it is possible to build more reliable and flexible Real-Time systems. This paper describes the abstract simulators for dynamic structure DEVS; moreover, the implementing process is presented to show how the dynamic structure abstract simulators work seamlessly with the regular DEVS simulating engine. Asynchronous variational integrators (AVIs) have recently been introduced to address this challenge for a class of nonlinear elastodynamic problems. In this paper, we introduce a new and efficient parallel algorithm for the AVIs. We propose a new local-minima interpretation of the dependencies in the AVIs. Based on this interpretation, we show that the expected amount of parallelism in the AVIs is proportional to the number of elements of a mesh assuming a uniform distribution of the dependencies. Second, based on the local-minima interpretation, we introduce a parallel algorithm for the AVIs guided by the dependency graph of the computation that avoids using priority queues, thereby improving scalability. Third, we present an efficient multi-threaded implementation of the AVIs and introduce performance-optimization techniques using super-elements. Preliminary experimental results are presented to verify our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014.
