The GDA is a device capable of driving a vehicle fully automatically using the same interface as a human driver does. In this paper, the design of the GDA is discussed. The software and hardware of the GDA and its effect on vehicle behaviour are analyzed from a safety point of view. The hardware design of the GDA is adapted to achieve an acceptable level of fault tolerance. The software is designed and verified using formal methods and finally, a simulation model is built in Simulink to design a strategy to maintain safety during component failures and emergencies.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. Runtime behaviour is captured by reverse compilation of LLVM bytecode into augmented, self-profiling ANSI-C simulator programs retaining the LLVM instruction level. The actual global data flow is captured both in quantity and value range to guide function unit layout in the synthesis of application specific processors. Currently the implemented tool LLILA (Low Level Intermediate Language Analyzer) focuses on static code analysis on the inter-procedural data flow via e.g. function parameters and global variables to uncover a program's potential paths of data exchange.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. The idea for USE-eNET arises from experiences with USE-ME (United States -- Europe Multicultural Alliance in Computer Science and Engineering), a 2001--2004 EC-U.S. transatlantic implementation project, in which a consortium of 3 European (Glasgow, Hamburg, Vienna) and 3 U.S. (Chico, Lincoln, ODU Norfolk) universities aimed to develop an international graduate program in modeling and simulation (M&S). M&S programs pose particular problems because of their widely interdisciplinary nature, with no single disciplinary home in traditional university departments. Furthermore, they depend on a wide range of expertise not normally found on a single university campus. USE-ME concentrated mainly on transatlantic exchanges of students for full semesters. In reviewing the experience with USE-ME the participants recognised that sustaining the program would require other modalities for course delivery and student exchange and interaction. These include the use of innovative e-learning techniques that harness the power of simulation technology to provide on-line team projects that involve students on both sides of the Atlantic. They also realized that the challenge of sustaining the USE-ME program is indicative of a much broader range of problems.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. We have extended an existing simulation language: GLIDER, with abstractions to model systems where autonomous entities (agents) perceive and act upon their environments. We are now applying it to the study of multi-agent systems. In particular, an implementation on Biocomplexity [1] is briefly discussed in the paper. We also show how an Inductive Logic Programming system can be used to learn rules in a representation very close to the one used to guide the simulation in the biocomplex system. This establishes the feasibility of embedding (resource-bounded) learners as agents that take part in simulating a complex system, as defined by the theory.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. The abstract simulator of a PDEVS model is normally founded on the assumption of maximal parallelism: multiple components are allowed to undertake at the same time an independent state transition. This paper argues that the hypothesis of maximal parallelism does not allow PDEVS to adequately model and simulate systems where simultaneous state transitions are conflicting to one another. As an example, an original PDEVS model of Merlin and Farber Time Petri Nets is proposed. The realization owes to ActorDEVS, a lean and efficient PDEVS M&S framework in Java, which enables the simulation control structure to be customized. The accomplished experience suggests that some points in the formal definition of PDEVS should possibly be adapted in order to widen the applicability of the language.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. Our goal is to simulate different types of pedestrian movement, from regular to panic. But here we emphasize regular situations which imply that pedestrians analyze environment and choose their route more carefully. And transition probabilities have to depict such effect. The potentials of floor fields [5] and environment analysis [4] are combined in the model obtained. Model parameters adaptivity and modelling of people patience are included in the model. These things make simulation of pedestrians movement more realistic. Some simulation results are presented and comparison with basic model (FF-model [5]) is made.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. The analysis shows that the scheme has several benefits. By eliminating the common mode voltage from the three phases of the machine the motor bearing current is entirely removed. The maximum insulation stress in the motor winding is limited to the peak value of input phase voltage. The power factor at the utility end is controllable. By using matrix converters for power conversion bulky capacitors are eliminated from the drive.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. In order to provide synchronous manufacturing between Capacity Constrained Resources (CCR) and non-Capacity Constraint Resources (non-CCR), an approach was developed based on the Drum-Buffer-Rope (DBR) scheduling system, which was intended for solving problems such as this. The approach was based on a heuristic that integrates Wagner-Whitin's algorithm and finite loading method to determine optimum lot sizes for non-CCR machine's material release schedule. A simulation model was used to analyze whether an improved scheduling approach was appropriate or not. An experimental study was also conducted to determine the time buffers.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. In contrast, Model-Driven Design environments like Rhapsody support capturing domain-specific software design, but offer limited support for simulation. In this paper we describe the use of domain knowledge in empowering simulation environments to support domain-specific modeling. We show how software design pattern abstractions extend the domain-neutral simulation modeling. We applied Composite, Facade, and Observer patterns to an astronomical observatory (AO) command and control system and developed domain-specific simulation models for the system using DEVSJAVA, a realization of OO-DEVS. This approach is exemplified with simulation models developed based on an actual AO system.","PeriodicalId":91410,"journal":{"name":"Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014.
