This coalescence of the two disciplines has resulted in a plethora of new software tools aiding in Biological research. These tools are largely unoptimized and written on the fly without performance largely in mind. These applications are predominately single-threaded and suffer from poor performance. CUDA is a GPU Computing API that will help to resolve poor run-time performance in Bioinformatics tools. The aim of this research is to convert the currently existing bioinformatics code into GPU accelerated and multithreaded CUDA code.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"58 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74365529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a system that allows an intersection traffic signal controller to adapt to the arrivals of a priority vehicle in a non-invasive manner by using real-time vehicle positions collected via V2I. Our scheduling algorithm uses the real-time positions and the intersection's historical timing data to determine a minimum-disruption timing plan that allows the priority vehicle to arrive during a green phase for its signal. The results show that the priority vehicle can achieve noticeable delay reduction with a lower level of delay increase by the other vehicles. The work demonstrates the power of vehicle-to-infrastructure communication in enhancing transportation operation by participating in traffic control.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82324580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The workshop is held at a local HBCU and led by African American undergraduates computer science majors who attend that HBCU. The workshop is focused on a robotic ball called an Sphero that allows users to control its motion and color by writing lines of code. Results from workshop showed an increase of interest in pursuing a career in computing after graduation compared to interest before the start of the workshop.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80790966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty-seven (n=47) students were selected randomly to participate in the preliminary study. A brief questionnaire was administered after participants experienced three different game interfaces. The preliminary results showed that there were statically significant differences between the players' experience with the different game interfaces. Based on initial observation, the calculated means, and statistical analysis, we can postulate that when designing a game interface, it is not always best to utilize a simplistic interface design and that a complex interface may be more desirable in creating a positive impact for players. This is a work in progress, and with extended experimentation with a larger number of participants and a larger variety of games could potentially provide more accurate details in responding to our research questions.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"PP 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84353211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One well known method for implementing reinforcement learning is the SARSA-λ algorithm. The traditional SARSA-λ algorithm is inefficient at finding a moving target because it relies only on the learned values of a stationary Q-table. While this works in static environments (e.g., finding optimal routes through a challenging environment to a stationary goal). The proposed solution to this problem is eSense. eSensex is a dual-layered, dynamic, homeostatic SARSA-λ algorithm with eligibility traces. It gives the AI a temporal sense (so it knows what is around it) to aid in the learning process. The dual-layered descriptor signifies that there are actually two grids in place, one for the navigation within the environment and another one that tracks the area surrounding the agent. Because this second grid moves around on the environment grid, it is dynamic. Additionally, the target the agent is pursuing is also moving, so it is also dynamic. Additionally, since this second grid is centered around the agent it is homeostatic (centered around the agent). Finally, the eligibility traces provide enhanced learning within this environment by providing more feedback per iteration (i.e., more states are updated each iteration). This enhanced configuration has helped eSense learn the target's tendencies while still relying on the Q-table to guide it away from walls and other obstacles. This layered approach provides an improvement to the standard SARSA-λ approach.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84882939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research presented in this paper examines two types of features of Android applications, permission requests and system calls, as a way to detect malware. We are able to differentiate between benign and malicious apps by applying a machine learning algorithm. The model that is presented here achieved a classification accuracy of around 80% using permissions and 60% using system calls for a relatively small dataset. In the future, different machine learning algorithms will be examined to see if there is a more suitable algorithm. More features will also be taken into account and the training set will be expanded.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"112 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73666854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs), the sensing range of a visual sensor is often directional and modeled as a convex triangular shape in 2D and a pyramid-shape in 3D, which renders the k-coverage solutions proposed for WSNs incapable of solving the problem in WVSNs. Moreover, a number of WVSN applications consider 3D indoor space monitoring, which makes previous solutions proposed for 2D WVSN coverage less effective. In this paper, we take an initial step to tackle this challenging problem by considering 2-coverage for WVSNs in 3D indoor space monitoring. To maximize the information that can be captured by 2 visual sensors covering a 3D location, we propose to deploy the visual sensors from different directional angles and further extend 2-coverage to \"2-angular-coverage\" to denote such unique requirements in WVSNs. We demonstrate our simulated WVSN testing platform which emulates a 3D space and highlights our objective to provide efficient 2-angular-coverage in the indoor environment by minimizing the number of visual sensors required to cover the full regions through precision angle view monitoring. We formulate the general problem in a continuous space and then discretize our model via a lattice based approach. In addition, we also create a strategy to determine the degree of coverage for the WVSN, where a given location needs to be covered by at least 2 visual sensors that fulfill the angular-coverage requirement. We design an efficient greedy heuristic and an enhanced-Depth First Search algorithm to solve the discrete version problem, where the latter, if given enough time can return an optimal solution. By extensive simulations, we demonstrate that both our solutions can achieve superior performance on minimizing the number of required visual sensors for 2-angular-coverage in 3D indoor space monitoring.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83321642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Users carry mobile devices and these devices scan, collect and record the data (such as MAC address) of nearby APs at each timestamp. Missed information in the traces poses challenge for discovering mobility behaviors. Specifically, the real geographic locations of access points (APs) are important information that the data does not offer. However, it does not mean these traces are useless, we still can extract meaningful information related to mobility behaviors. First, we propose to discuss campus life in two behavioral categories: Study-Work (SW) and Entertainment-Recreation (ER). And use a new selection rule to divide APs into the two categories. Then we speculate on the behavior of people (SW or ER) at different times based on the two sets. Second, we establish two types of cells representing SW and ER, and then integrate the traces into different cells. Lastly, we introduce visual analytic methods (ST path and flow map) to reveal both general and detailed mobility behaviors.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"306 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78914536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although many different security options exist to protect against these threats, the selection of such options is often left up to the user. In this paper, we review the current literature on mobile security and provide a comprehensive list of recommendations for user safety. We also conduct a user study to ascertain awareness concerning these recommendations. Our results show that users, especially those without strong information technology familiarity, tend to ignore or be unaware of many critical security options. Further work must develop methods to improve awareness and adoption of mobile security. The list of recommendations provided in this paper and the knowledge gained from the user study could be helpful in this regard. We suggest building educational tools to improve user awareness of security vulnerabilities and increase their protection against known mobile threats.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"62 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79187197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
