This effort focuses on malware used for spying on user's activities, remotely controlling devices, and identity and credential theft within a Windows based operating system. As Windows operating systems create and maintain a log of all events that are encountered, various malware are tested on virtual machines to determine what events they trigger in the Windows logs. The observations are compiled into Operating System specific lookup tables that can then be used to find the tested malware on other computers with the same Operating System.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87558970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One reason for this is that computing engineers may not have sufficient preparation in a well-defined software development process and computer scientists do not often have sufficient knowledge of low-level architecture of controller devices. The actual implementation of software for embedded subsystems is usually carried out with the C programming language and might also require assembly language routines called from the C program. Several existing micro-controller development boards include software support for developing C and assembly programs. Examples of these types of boards are: Arduino boards and Silicon Labs Development kits. The software support provided mainly includes software tools such as: C compiler, editor, debugger, utilities for transferring the compiled program to the actual micro-controller board. This paper presents the first version of the high-level systems programming language Systems Computing Language (SCL). This is part of larger ongoing project that has as its goal the investigation of newer approaches, methods, techniques, and tools for improving the software development of embedded systems. The language syntax is defined at a higher level of abstraction than C, C++, and Java. Its compiler is implemented as a pre-processor that generates C code, that will subsequently be compiled and linked with standard tools. This paper provides an overview of systems programming languages, a description of the main features of the SCL language, then presents an example of an SCL program implemented for an Arduino program.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75767368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Batch normalization was recently proposed to reduce the distribution of each layer's input to accelerate the training process. It also reduces overfitting and eliminates the need for using dropout in the fully connected layers, or RELU activation. Batch normalization, in its essence, seeks stable distribution of activation values throughout training, and normalizes the inputs of nonlinear data. In order to determine the usefulness of batch normalization in neural networks that don't use fully connected layers we evaluated the performance of an encoder-decoder ConvNet with and without using batch normalization. We found that batch normalization increased the learning performance by 18% but also increased the training time in each epoch (iteration) by 26%. The code for this work and the datasets are provided in a github repository.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"38 2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79904927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rough set theory was introduced by Pawlak with respect to the study of intelligent systems characterized by insufficient and incomplete information. The VPRS model proposed by Ziarko was an extended rough set model. Over the past twenty years, rough set theory has been an active area of research. The decision tables, their derivations and the corresponding algorithms have played an essential role in these researches. Decision tables can be classified into various categories, such as deterministic decision tables, non-deterministic decision tables, and probabilistic decision tables. A probabilistic decision table is extracted from data based on the VPRS model, in which one observation can have more than one decision. Thus, a probabilistic decision table usually has a boundary region that, however, usually can be treated as a new domain and used to build a new decision table. If applying this method recursively, a hierarchy of linear structure of the decision tables can be constructed, which can be as a classifier to classify unknown objects. After the hierarchy is built, its performance can be improved by two techniques: pruning each table and incremental learning. Pruning the tables can simplify the structure of the hierarchy and remove redundant information, if available, so as to improve its efficiency. The purpose of incremental learning is to reflect the presentation of newly added training objects while retaining knowledge acquired from old data. A common approach to classify unknown objects by holistic-matching methods is \"distance-based classification\" that is often suffered by the variations of unknown objects. When applying the hierarchy as the classifier, in order to overcome such limitations, a method called probabilistic distance-based method was utilized to match unknown objects to the corresponding category. This workshop has four sections. It first introduces the basic concepts of rough set theories, especially the VPRS model and the hierarchy of probabilistic decision tables. Then, the procedure of building the hierarchy and pruning each decision table are covered. After that, it describes how to classify unknown objects, applying the hierarchy as a classifier. Finally, how to perform incremental learning is included.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"52 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85770581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Agile methodology tends to favor Functional Requirements (FRs) while disregarding Non-Functional Requirements (NFRs). Disregarding NFRs can have adverse effects on software that can result in lower quality and increased rate to repair software in later stages. This research is a component of the Capture Elicit and Prioritizing (CEP) methodology. The Prioritizing part of the methdology is covered in this paper. The goal of this research focuses on the prioritizing part to improve the prioritization of NFRs. This study provides methods in NFRs prioritization during beginning stages in agile development process. The Capture Elicit Prioritize methodology prioritizes NFRs by using the αβγ- framework similar to priority of FRs. The αβγ-framework provides unique capabilities to development teams. The interchanging capabilities of the αβγ-framework allows developers to be flexible. Prioritization of NFRs concurs with developing agile software. This accommodates agile developer to plan for budget and time.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"87 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87439379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typical resources available to students during the course selection process such as course descriptions, course syllabi, course evaluations, and comments from previous students provide the same information to all students. However, personalized information about new courses will help individual students better find their right courses and eventually achieve their academic goals. In this paper, we propose a new application of recommender systems for course selection in the education domain. The proposed course tip recommender is based on the multi-criteria rating collaborative filtering-based recommender system, using students' characterizations of courses with respect to a set of course characterization criteria. It can provide individual students with a variety of personalized tips on new courses and serve as a useful personalization tool to guide students in the course selection process.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81771699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dronely uses drones as a way of raising interest in computer science among K-12 students by presenting a user-friendly and intuitive drag-and-drop interface for building programs that have a physically observable effect. Although the language was designed so that simple tasks are straightforward to accomplish, more complex programs can still be implemented in Dronely. However, different users may have different preferences in relation to different aspects of a product or a service and may struggle to extract relevant information from a massive amount of consumer reviews available online. In this paper, we present a framework for extracting prevalent topics from online reviews and automatically rating them on a 5-star scale. It consists of five modules, including linguistic pre-processing, topic modelling, text classification, sentiment analysis, and rating. Topic modelling is used to extract prevalent topics, which are then used to classify individual sentences against these topics. A state-of-the-art word embedding method is used to measure the sentiment of each sentence. The two types of information associated with each sentence -- its topic and sentiment -- are combined to aggregate the sentiment associated with each topic. The overall topic sentiment is then projected onto the 5-star rating scale. We use a dataset of Airbnb online reviews to demonstrate a proof of concept. The proposed framework is simple and fully unsupervised. It is also domain independent, and, therefore, applicable to any other domains of products and services.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83237197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
