In pursuit of larger, more accurate tradespaces, engineers port existing serial design and evaluation codes onto ERDC's supercomputers. This results in a significant number of producer-consumer, file-mediated codes running simultaneously on Lustre, the distributed file system underlying our HPC systems. In this paper, we compare the performance of Lustre to Linux tmpfs, a shared memory file system that was designed for interprocess data transfer within a single node. Our results suggest that when conducting many file I/O operations in close succession, tmpfs offers tremendous speedup over Lustre-controlled disk storage. For tradespace applications, our results lend credence to a strategy of scheduling and organizing disparate codes in such a way to leverage tmpfs. We believe our results will help guide engineers at other national labs and scientists without HPC expertise to more easily port their I/O heavy serial codes to HPC systems.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"72 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84014758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is estimated that the number of such devices will grow into billions within few years. These devices are highly distributed and have limited storage and processing capacity. To support the computational demand and the latency-sensitive applications of these distributed IoT devices, a new computing paradigm, Fog computing, has been introduced. Fog computing is considered as the promising extension of the Cloud computing paradigm that brings virtualized Cloud services to the edge of network to control the IoT devices. Motile cilia in the nasal and bronchial passages work to propel mucus and foreign matter from the respiratory system. Abnormal ciliary motion results in a wide spectrum of disorders. Currently, defective ciliary motion is diagnosed by visual examination of nasal biopsies for signs of dyskinesia. However, these examinations are highly subjective, lacking a \"common language\" of standardized quantitative metrics to describe the observed motion. Previous work relied on autoregressive representations of optical flow features that were fed into a support vector machine classifier. However, this approach was limited by two critical constraints: the strong parametric assumptions imposed by autoregressive models on the underlying structure of the data, and the requirement for experts to manually select regions of interest to be analyzed in the videos. Deep learning suffers from neither of these limitations. Feature maps are automatically generated from relevant portions of videos. Furthermore, the feed-forward architecture of convolutional neural networks do not impose the strong parametric assumptions of autoregressive models, permitting complex behaviors to be captured. Here, we demonstrate initial results in applying 3D deep convolutional networks to binary classification of ciliary motion. While our preliminary results lag behind those of previous work, there is considerable promise in deep learning for ciliary motion analysis and room for further experimental design.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89375263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To define an SPL, domain analysts must identify the common and variable aspects of systems in the family and capture this information so that it can be used effectively to construct specific products. Often analysts record this information using a feature model expressed visually as a feature diagram. The overall goal of this project is to enable wider use of SPLs by identifying relevant concepts, defining systematic methods, and developing practical tools that leverage familiar web programming technologies. This paper presents a novel approach to specification of feature models: capture the details using automatically generated user interfaces, encode the models in a relational database, and then validate the models and construct specific products using SQL.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"37 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73268284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Procedural video game content provides unique levels for users to experience, reduced allocated memory, and more time for developers to focus on other aspects of a game. The work presented consists of two parts: the implementation and analysis of five different algorithmic approaches that generate a 2D dungeon map, consisting of traversable rooms and corridors; and the application of the original code to a 3D game environment in Epic Game's Unreal Engine 4.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75623641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MLFQ-based systems have the advantage of not requiring data to be saved and updated for each process after each burst of CPU time. Thus, the overhead computation time to run the scheduling algorithm is small. But MLFQs along with other algorithms risk starvation of those processes needing large CPU bursts, which drop down to the lowest-priority queue(N) of the stack of queues. This research extends previous work investigating the safety of reallocating a small quantity of CPU time from higher-priority queues to the final queue in order to prevent starvation called MLFQ-No Starvation (MLFQ-NS). This research explores an extension of MLFQ-NS with the new idea of Intelligent Mitigation (MLFQ-IM) which redirects time not just to the final queue Qn, but also to Qn-1, which is studied through simulation to understand its effectiveness and safety in reallocating a percentage of CPU time to the two lowest priority queues Queue(N) and Queue(N-1) when under heavy load, at and exceeding the maximum CPU processing capacity.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"40 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78780316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rapid growth of IoT applications has increased the demand for experienced professionals in the area. Since few, if any, dedicated IoT courses are currently offered, most Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students will have limited or no exposure to IoT development until after graduation, and inadequately prepared in IoT development to enter into the workforce. Therefore, we have implemented an IoT-based learning framework to facilitate STEM undergraduate education. The design challenges of the novel learning framework are discussed in the paper. Subsequently, we established effective learning approaches to address the challenges. Specifically, we have introduced a lab development kit composed of Raspberry™ Pi/Arduino™ boards and sets of sensors with Zigbee™ supporting to provide wireless communication.","PeriodicalId":91384,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 ACM Southeast Regional Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73193096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
