Participants were required to hit 5 baseballs off of a tee with intention to hit line drives up the middle. At the completion of a three-minute rest, the participants were equipped with the resistance tubing training device and asked to perform 20 low effort dry swings. Subjects were then asked to hit 5 baseballs off a tee while wearing a resistance tubing training device and then 5 more off the tee without wearing a resistance tubing training device. Data were analyzed for the pre-device and post-device hits. \u0000Results: A repeated-measures multivariate analysis of variance revealed no significant differences pre-resistance and post-resistance tubing training device for center of mass over base of support (COM over BOS) or segmental velocities (Λ=0.68, F4,6=0.72, p=0.608). Conclusion: The absence of a significant decrease in segmental velocities could expose a resistance tubing training device as an appropriate warm-up tool and beneficial training aid. Because the resistance tubing training device is not detrimental to segmental velocities in the acute sense, it should be considered a practical sport-specific training aid.

Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the relevance of altitude of the habitual place of abode for course times of alpinists in one of the largest backcountry skiing races in the Swiss West Alps: “Patrouille des Glaciers” (PDG) from Zermatt and Arolla to Verbier. Therefore course times and altitudes of the habitual place of abode of 1569 male and 240 female alpinists participating in the PDG in the years 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014 were analyzed. Results revealed that an increase in elevation of about 1000 m (e.g. from 500 to 1500 m above sea level) lead to a decrease in course time of around 80 minutes. Findings can be explained by the effects of reduced oxygen partial pressure at higher altitudes, respectively hypoxia, through induction of several physiological changes in the alpinists’ bodies. Alpinists primarily living at higher altitude are therefore better acclimatized and thus prepared for the race; hence adequate acclimatization is paramount not only for improving course time but also for staying safe whilst participating in the PDG.

Although the Olympic Moves Project was launched in Holland as an Olympic movement in 2003 and has been underway in Japan from 2015, there have been only a few studies that have reported on the actual state of activities on projects in countries around the world and the present state of affairs in Japan. This study describes the content of Olympic Moves projects underway in various countries, along with the status of Olympic Moves in Japan and how the existing program can be strengthened. Holland, Belgium, and South Korea have each held large-scale sports events in their Olympic Moves program, with teenagers from all over the country coming together at famous sports stadiums. In contrast, the events in Japan have been recreational in nature and limited in scope to individual middle schools. We hope that his aspect of the Olympic Movement will continue at many middle schools as a positive, lasting part of Japan's Olympic legacy.

Subjects visited the laboratory three separate times. During visit 1, subjects were familiarized with performance testing procedures and the self-MFR foam rolling and fatigue protocols. For visits 2 and 3, subjects were first (T1) assessed for vertical jump height, velocity and power as well as dynamic reaction time (DRT). Subjects then performed the exercise fatigue protocol followed by either a self-MFR foam rolling treatment (MFR) or seated rest (CON). Immediately after, subjects repeated the performance tests (T2). \u0000Results: CON resulted in a significantly greater percent decline from T1-T2 for average power (p=0.03), average velocity (p=0.02) and peak power (p=0.03) than the MFR treatment. No between-treatment differences were detected for %Δ vertical jump height (p=0.14) or DRT (p=0.20). According to magnitude-based inference analysis, MFR is likely beneficial in attenuating fatigue-induced kinematic decrements (i.e. power and velocity). MFR is possibly beneficial with respect to mitigating acute fatigue-related impairment of jump height and dynamic reaction time. \u0000Conclusion: Results demonstrate the plausible short-term benefits of foam rolling on muscular performance decrements associated with acute muscular fatigue from exercise. Foam rolling following an exercise fatigue protocol blunted attenuation of movement velocity and power during a maximum vertical jump test but failed to alter decrements in direct performance outcomes (i.e. vertical jump height and DRT). Thus, a level of uncertainty remains with respect to the efficacy by which foam rolling blunts performance impairments provoked by strenuous exercise.

Novel lateral flow technology has allowed for rapid salivary assessment and offers an alternative practical method for monitoring salivary markers such as Alpha Amylase in AFL athletes throughout the in-season. Therefore, the present study aimed to (1) examine week-to-week and month-to-month variations in AFL athletes [sAA] throughout a 16 match period of the AFL in-season, and (2) examine the acute relationship between post-match measure of [sAA] and match-play exercise workloads. Twenty elite male Australian Rules Footballers (24.3 ± 4.2 years, 186.7 ± 7.3 cm, 87.6 ± 8.0 kg) were monitored throughout 16 in-season AFL matches for sAA taken 36-h post-match and exercise workloads (player load) using GPS IA. The present study utilized a linear mixed model analyses for time dependent changes in [sAA] and player load. A significant main effect was found for week-to-week analysis of 36-h post-match [sAA] (F (15, 36)=5.12, p<0.001) and for match-play player loads (F (15, 61)=2.33, p=0.011). Further a significant main effect (F (3 19)=11.88, p<0.001) was found for month-to-month changes in 36-h post-match [sAA]. Finally, high inter- (103%) and intra-subject (110 %) variation of [sAA] were found. The present study presents novel data of trends in 36-h post-match [sAA] for AFL athletes. Results demonstrated a significant changes in month-to-month 36-h post-match [sAA] peaking in the final month of the study. Month-to-month analysis of [sAA] may highlight an accumulative SNS fatigue effect throughout the AFL in-season, however results on a week-to-week basis need to be analysed with caution given the high levels of intra- and inter-subject variation.

The aim of this paper is therefore to develop a differentiated taxonomy for sports with regard to their specific visual-spatial demands. Fundamental to the reasonable progression of this taxonomy is the established interaction of motor and cognitive and in particular motor and visual-spatial abilities. Based on an up-to-date theoretically motivated typology, which categorizes visual-spatial abilities in extrinsic-static, extrinsic-dynamic, intrinsic-static and intrinsicdynamic abilities, a visual-spatial classification of sports is presented. Subsequently, different tests for the acquisition of visual-spatial abilities and thus a possibility to match types of sport to the taxonomy are presented. Finally an overview of various forms of visual-spatial training provides an insight into the benefit of such a classification system in sports practice.

Methods: Twenty healthy college-aged males volunteered to participate in the present single blind, repeated measures study. Three treatments were administered (botanical spray, botanical drops, placebo) at the onset of 30 minutes of 80% VO2 max cycle ergometer exercise. Secretory IgA and Human Alpha Defensin were quantified in saliva samples 30 minutes and 90 minutes post exercise. Results: Analysis via repeated measures Anova revealed a significant treatment effect at 30 min (p=0.030) with post hoc testing revealing a difference between the botanical spray and placebo (p=0.027), but by 90 minutes there was no differences by treatment (p=0.758). There was no difference by treatment observed at either 30 or 90 minutes for human alpha defensin concentrations. Conclusions: Based upon these preliminary data, it appears that a single dose of the tested botanical blend delivered via mouth spray can increase sIgA, one of the primary anti-microbial proteins in the oral cavity, for a short time post exercise.

The purposes of this study were: 1) to collect baseline data on nutrient intake in order to advise athletes regarding nutrition practices that may enhance performance, and 2) to compare nutrient intake of elite and collegiate karate athletes. Thirtyfive female black belt karate athletes volunteered to participate in this study. They were divided into 2 groups: 20 athletes who were members of the national team (elite athletes) and 15 collegiate karate athletes (collegiate athletes). The elite athletes showed significantly higher mean lean body mass and significantly lower body fat and fat mass than the collegiate athletes. The elite athletes showed significantly higher energy intake and more nutrient intakes than the collegiate athletes. There were no significant differences in diet compositions between the elite and collegiate athletes. The elite athletes showed all micronutrient intakes were above 100% of the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) or Adequate Intake (AIs), whereas the collegiate athletes showed micronutrient intakes below 100% of the EAR or AIs for potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, vitamins A and C. Thus, we advised collegiate athletes to consume adequate amounts of carbohydrates and protein. To attain these goals, it is desirable to increase the amount of meals by increasing the intake levels of grains, vegetables, fruit, milk and dairy products, lean meat and fish.

Anthropometry, sprint speed, anaerobic power, leg power, upper- and lower-body strength were measured pre- and post-training. Venous blood was assessed for interleukin (IL-1b, IL- 10, IL-6, TNFα) and Creatine kinase (Ck) concentrations at weekly intervals. \u0000Results: IL-1b and IL-10 concentrations were reduced from baseline after three and four weeks, respectively whereas IL-6 and TNF-α concentrations did not change over the 5-week period. Ck was increased above baseline after three weeks of training and returned to baseline at 5 weeks. Maximal bench press, hack squat, bench pull, and skinfold thickness were all improved after the 5-week training period. \u0000Conclusion: Early increases in Ck may indicate muscle damage in response to an increased volume of physical activity or unaccustomed exercise, while a return to baseline Ck levels may indicate adaptation. Increases in muscle strength confirm positive muscle adaptation and the training resulted in a reduction in basal IL-10 and TNF alpha production which could be characteristics of normal training response. From a practical perspective, the program employed in this study provided a useful training plan to increase physical qualities, and adaptation to muscle damage.
