We hypothesize that 3D-US is a reliable method to determine and evaluate changes occurring in the pelvic floor during normal pregnancy and puerperium, and can be used by any urogynecology specialist with US-imaging experience. We aimed to validate this method for clinical application. Materials and methods: We performed a prospective study of 162 nulliparous pregnant women evaluated at weeks 12, 28 and 36, and at 48 hours postpartum and three months post-delivery. At each of the five visits, we performed transperineal 3D-US of the pelvic floor and 3D-PDA to assess periurethral vascularization. Results: Quantification of the vaginal anterior vaginal wall anchors (AWA) is an anthropometric parameter sensitive to changes in pregnancy and puerperium. Significant differences in AWA were observed according to delivery mode, being lower in vaginal deliveries than cesarean sections and even lower in prolonged labor deliveries and those in which episiotomy was performed. Posterior uretrovesical angle (UVA) increased during pregnancy, partially recovering after delivery although less so in those with epidural analgesia. Urethral sphincter volume (USV) decreased significantly during labor and postpartum. Periurethral vascularization increased during pregnancy and decreased significantly after delivery. Levator hiatus area (LHA) increased during pregnancy and decreased after delivery. Patients who received epidural analgesia and oxytocin showed better LHA recovery. Prolonged labor and greater fetal head circumference increased LHA. The anorectal angle (ARA) increased during pregnancy and decreased postpartum. Conclusion: All 3D-US variables and their changes during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period are measurable using the Virtual Computer-Aided Analysis (VOCAL method) with automatic threshold, which is more reliable and faster for measuring USV. AWA as an important new biometric parameter should be included in the study of the pelvic floor.","PeriodicalId":89580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of biomedical graphics and computing","volume":"5 1","pages":"23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5430/JBGC.V5N2P23","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71216253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One such SAIP tool is the semi-automatedPhilips liver segmentation and analysis package (Endhoven, The Netherlands). The intra- and inter-rater reliability of the livervolumes of 16 participants calculated using this tool was assessed. Methods: Two CT Technologists accessed Abdominal CT data sets and calculated the volume of the liver using the Philips liversegmentation and analysis package. One technologist repeated their calculation. Results: Results demonstrated high intra-rater reliability (ICC 0.9997) and high inter-rater reliability (ICC 0.99994). Analysiswith Bland Altman plots showed the mean bias for both intra- and inter-rater reliability to be close to zero with acceptable limitsof agreement. Conclusions: This study has shown that liver volume measurements using the Philips SAIP (Endhoven, The Netherlands) can betaken reliably by CT technologists, with confidence that the same results would be obtained between different CT technologists.","PeriodicalId":89580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of biomedical graphics and computing","volume":"5 1","pages":"17"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5430/JBGC.V5N2P17","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71216182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we present a mathematical methodology capableof differing 29 non-clinical volunteers with distinct degrees of trait anxiety (high or low) according to the State and TraitAnxiety Inventory (STAI-T) using an electrocardiogram (ECG) data as starting point. Specifically, the wavelet transforms andits statistical measures were used to extract simple patterns from the resting ECG and classify the group as low or high traitanxiety. The Daubechies, Haar and Symlet mother function were used to filter the original ECG data. Then, by means ofthe Weka Learning Algorithm and using only 5 attributes (Pearson Coefficient from Haar and Symlet, Median from Haar andMode of Haar and Daubechies) we achieved a higher level of reliability, 96.90% ( p < .05), with low training percentages. Theresults showed the efficiency of this methodology to classify volunteers according to their anxiety levels through an ECG datacollection.","PeriodicalId":89580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of biomedical graphics and computing","volume":"5 1","pages":"9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5430/JBGC.V5N2P9","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71216155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A modification to the Bland-Altman plot which involves replacing the difference plotted on the vertical axis withthe relative percent difference between two measurements of tumor burden is discussed. Quantifying tumor burden requiressumming skewed individual tumor measurements. This quantity is the same one used in assessing tumor response to therapeuticagents and is familiar to radiologists and clinicians working with cancer patients. The distribution of the relative difference isexplored and revised equations for the limits of agreement are presented. The methods are then applied to positron emissiontomography data studying two radiotracers. Results: The distribution of the relative difference is highly skewed and can be approximated by a negative shifted lognormaldistribution. The limits of agreement for the RD need to appropriately reflect this distribution. The standard equations for the95% limits of agreement assume the differences are approximately normally distributed and may not be appropriate for therelative difference. However, the factors influencing the activity of the motor cortex have not been fully elucidated. Therefore, the presentstudy investigated the influence of the magnitude of bite force on brain activity. Fifteen right-handed healthy subjects (24-32 years; mean age, 27.8 years) were included. Sustained, constant clenching with small and large forces comprised the motortask. The spatial extent of the functional magnetic resonance imaging signal in the primary sensorimotor cortex increased withan increasing bite force in all subjects. These findings indicated the possibility of measuring the activated area in the primarysensorimotor cortex during clenching using functional magnetic resonance imaging, which revealed that the brain activity wasrelated to the magnitude of the bite force.","PeriodicalId":89580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of biomedical graphics and computing","volume":"5 1","pages":"28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5430/JBGC.V5N1P28","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71215697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MRI often shows degenerativechanges at more than one level. Degenerative changes can occur in patients without symptoms and clinical diagnosis. Analysesof referred pain distribution from cervical nerve roots have shown only 50% correlation to the classical sensory dermatome. Surgical treatment of patients with cervical radiculopathy attributed to degenerative disease is associated with moderate outcomeresults. Our aim was to assess the diagnostic value of cervical selective nerve root blocks (SNRB) in our Trust in surgical decisionmaking. Methods: The data was collected retrospectively from electronic hospital records on CRIS, PACS and NOTIS on consecutivepatients who underwent cervical nerve root blocks for diagnostic purpose between 1st Jan 2011 and 31st December 2011. Results: Total of 50 patients had cervical SNRB for diagnostic reasons. It influenced surgical decision making in 84% (42) ofthese patients and not in 2% cases. 10% did not have any follow up after cervical SNRB. Decision in favour of surgery wasmade in 71.5% of these 42 patients. Conclusions: In chronic cervical brachialgia, cervical SNRB is extremely influential in surgical decision making, in bothwhether to operate and which levels scenario.","PeriodicalId":89580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of biomedical graphics and computing","volume":"5 1","pages":"23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5430/JBGC.V5N1P23","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71215654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Variations in renal arteries are quite common, and it is very important for renal interventionists to have a good knowledge about the possibility of anatomical variations in renal arteries. The most common reported variations are early division and accessory vessels, however, other rare variations like higher origin of renal arteries, as reported in this case report, should also be taken in consideration. The importance of these variations arise from the increase number of renal interventional procedures performed by interventional radiologists, urologists and general surgeons; in interventional radiology it is very important to know the possibility of higher origin renal artery in order to cover this vessel when performing conventional angiography. It is also important for urologists when performing renal transplant. The embryology of renal arteries dictates the possibility of these variations; theoretically, renal arteries can arise from the aorta along the whole length of rete arteriosum urogenitale which extends from cervical 6th to lumbar 3rd vertebra.","PeriodicalId":89580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of biomedical graphics and computing","volume":"5 1","pages":"20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5430/JBGC.V5N1P20","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71215591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An obstructed kidney produces buildup of urine within thekidney which increases pressure within the kidney. This condition can be a result of several different causes of which pregnancyis one of them. Obstructed kidneys in pregnancy call for relieving by nephrostomy which is a thin, plastic tube (catheter) that isinserted through the skin on the back and into the kidney. It can relieve a build-up of urine in the kidney and prevents the kidneyfrom being damaged. It drains urine directly from one or both kidneys into a collecting bag outside the body. The bag has a tapso it can be emptied. Aims: To find out the rate of nephrostomy tube insertion in pregnant women in North Manchester General Hospital betweenJanuary 2009 – December 2013. To identify problems that emanated from insertion of the nephrostomies. Results: Fifteen patients out of 24,863 deliveries (0.06%) in our catchment area underwent 17 nephrostomy procedures. Allthe nephrostomy insertions were successfully and safely undertaken. There was no immediate complication. The complicationsthat were noted include: subsequent blockage of nephrostomy tubes which required readmission to flush the tubes to renderthem patent, two nephrostomy tubes subsequently fell out which were replaced, there was 1 minor infection which was treatedby oral antibiotics. Surgical causes of obstruction found at post-partum nephrostogram include calculi and ureteric strictureswhich were managed post-partum. All the pregnancies continued to full-term with delivery of normal full-term babies. Conclusions: Percutaneous nephrostomy insertion in the pregnant woman under ultra-sound scan guidance is a safe and effectiveprocedure associated with minimal complications and this allows pregnancy to continue to full term. The fact that theblocked nephostomies could all be flushed easily to unblock the tubes would indicate that if all district nurses are taught how tocarefully flush nephrostomies readmission with blocked nephrostomies would be minimised. Strict adherence to nephrostomyprotocol would partly help reduce complications associated with nephrostomy insertion in pregnancy.","PeriodicalId":89580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of biomedical graphics and computing","volume":"9 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5430/JBGC.V5N1P1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71215440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
