As a first step toward arguing for the validity of TEPS score interpretation and use, this paper presents an interpretation/use argument (IUA) for the revised TEPS, following Kane’s argument-based approach to validation (Kane, 2013). The IUA for the revised TEPS outlines seven inferences — domain definition, evaluation, generalization, explanation, extrapolation, utilization, and consequence implication — with a warrant and one or more assumptions underlying each inference. Backing or evidence that is needed to support each assumption is also stated in the IUA. As a second step, a validity argument for the revised TEPS is made by describing the backing that has already been collected while pointing out the backing that is still needed. The paper concludes with further research that needs to be conducted to support the validity argument more fully.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43698999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The emergence of new information and communication technology has drastically changed the ways we communicate. This has made it necessary to re-conceptualize the construct of English language proficiency. To respond to such needs and to TEPS test takers’ feedback that had accumulated for more than 15 years, a series of research projects was undertaken to revise the TEPS during the years of 2016-2018. Major changes included a reduction in the number of items and testing time and the addition of new item types (e.g., testlets) and more authentic passage formats (e.g., e-mails, instant messages, online newspaper articles). This paper introduces the background to how the decision to revise the TEPS came to be made and describes the rationale behind the revision of the TEPS test blueprint and specification.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43069649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, LCs were subdivided into three types: (a) language-internal, (b) sociolinguistic, and (c) pragmatic LCs. A total of 160 listening items were chosen from SNULT Chinese and SNULT French tests (80 from each) and then analyzed according to the tripartite, classification scheme of LCs. Results of analyses have revealed that one or more types of LCs were identified in about 61% of 80 items for dialog-based listening comprehension sections of SNULT Chinese and SNULT French, respectively. This result indicates that LCs are largely reflected in SNULT and that these tests can provide appropriate test construction models for assessing communicative competence.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46502751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Towards this goal, we first review, as the prehistory of the TEPS, the tradition of foreign language testing at the Language Education Institute (LEI) of Seoul National University. Second, we survey a series of research projects undertaken to develop the TEPS. Third, we examine several milestones in the history of the TEPS and its family of tests, which symbolize important milestones of further growth, expansion, and transformation in various aspects of test development, production, and administration. Fourth, we discuss major research studies conducted to improve and validate the TEPS. Finally, we conclude the article with future prospects of language assessment and TEPS in Korea.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41718902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 50 reading and listening items each were selected from SNULT German vol. 2. (in press) and SNULT Japanese vol. 2. (2019) and then analyzed by using Bachman’s (1990) Test Method Facets framework. Results of analysis have shown that the reading and listening sections of both tests are so constructed that each question has not only various degrees of difficulties, but also focuses on measuring test taker’s ability to grasp main ideas, to understand details, and to make plausible inferences. These findings suggest that both SNULT German and Japanese tests are equipped with appropriate formats and contents for testing test-takers’ foreign language competence and therefore seen to be valid foreign language testing tools.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48830124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For reliability analyses, multiple sets of data were collected not only from the operational TEPS administrations before and after the revision but also from the four pilot tests administered during the TEPS revision process. Cronbach’s (1951) alpha coefficients were computed for four different section scores of the tests while Feldt and Brennan’s (1989) composite score reliability coefficients were computed for the total scores of these tests. These coefficients are examined and compared across different test forms of the original and revised TEPS. Coefficients of equivalence and stability and correlation coefficients between forms before and after the revision were also examined to see how stable TEPS scores were. The results showed that TEPS section scores and the total score were reliable and that the changes introduced by the revision did not reduce the stability. The total score had high reliability above 0.9 indicating that TEPS can be used as a dependable indicator of Korean English language learners’ English proficiency to inform language-related, decision-making.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":"140 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41283031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty-one KFL students, enrolled in Second-year and Third-year level Korean courses at a university in Australia, completed an online questionnaire. The findings suggested that these students had moderate levels of FLA ( M =2.78), especially regarding speaking ( M =3.16) and listening ( M =3.09). The students also showed high levels of self-efficacy in listening ( M =3.66) and speaking ( M =3.36). Positive correlations were found between FLA and the four skill-specific anxieties, with negative correlations between FLA and levels of self-efficacy in the four specific skills. Speaking self-efficacy was found to be the best predictor of FLA, and a lack of knowledge of Korean was revealed to be the major source of anxiety across all four skills. The students also felt confident when performing routine class activities.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47561407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using a picture description task in which pictures ambiguously illustrated either a giving event (-eykeyREC ... cwuta ‘give ... to’) or a receiving event (-eykeySOURCE ... patta ‘receive ... from’), we found that giving events were predominantly preferred to receiving events. The results of the online sentence comprehension study revealed that 1) give-type verbs were integrated into sentences faster than receive-type verbs overall and 2) the reading-time differences between the verb types were significant when role NPs were canonically ordered (NP-eykey ... NP-(l)ul) but not when they were noncanonically presented (NP-(l)ul ... NP-eykey). We claim that structural and semantic frequency bias associated with -eykey facilitates readers’ anticipatory processing in the integration of upcoming information. We further discuss how the processing differences in giving and receiving events might attribute to the argument-adjunct distinction between recipients and sources.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43891180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both groups of speakers were asked to mark words that they perceived as being prominent, while listening to a speech in real time. The information status of a word was annotated as a function of referential and lexical information, as well as focus. The results show that Korean native speakers perceive prosodic prominence in a similar manner to that of English native speakers. Both groups are more likely to perceive prominence for new or focused words than for given or non-focused words. The two groups, however, differ in that Korean native speakers tend to more frequently perceive prominence for words carrying lexical information than English native speakers. This bias seems to be influenced by parts-of-speech, in alignment with the findings of previous studies.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47933410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study addresses the individual differences in the acceptability judgments of Korean wh- island sentences in terms of working memory. In order to determine if the varied judgments of acceptability are attributable to differences in individuals’ working memory, an acceptability judgment test on various Korean wh- island constructions, and two memory span tests — a reading span test and a digit span test — were administered to 66 adult Korean native speakers. Pearson correlation analysis and a factor analysis were then performed on the participants’ acceptability judgment ratings and memory spans. The results revealed that the individuals’ acceptability judgments for wh- island sentences were not correlated with their reading span or digit span, although the group’s mean acceptability of the constructions gradually decreased as their expected processing complexity increased. These findings indicate that differences in individuals’ working memory are not the source of the observed acceptability variation.","PeriodicalId":89433,"journal":{"name":"Language research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41690424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
