Data were collected from 241 college students at three different time points: semester week 2, week 8, and week 14. Results indicated that students experienced increased levels of family disengagement as the semester progressed. Furthermore, a serial multiple mediation analysis indicated that family disengagement at T1 and T3 could be explained by perceptions of less family support, greater loneliness, and increased stress. Finally, a parallel multiple mediation analysis indicated that social support provided by friends (not family or special person support) significantly mediated loneliness over time. The results suggest that family disengagement is a natural process that young adults experience throughout college and provide a greater understanding of the role that social support plays with loneliness and perceived stress.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"5 1","pages":"20 - 29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2014.927384","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60318018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examined whether a videotaped couple conflict decreases child’s short-term attention performance, comparing the effect to the known disruptive impact of watching action films. Participants were 60 children, aged 11–13 years. Children’s performance in an attention task was measured prior to and immediately after video exposure and their skin conductance level (SCL) was assessed throughout stimulus presentation in two experimental conditions: (i) couple conflict condition and (ii) action film condition. Results indicate that the simulated couple conflict more harmfully disrupted children’s accuracy performance (i.e. error ratio) although being less physiologically arousing than the action film. No significant group differences were present concerning concentration performance as a behavioral outcome. The present study adds to the evidence that interparental conflict might be crucial in understanding more profoundly attention difficulties in children.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"5 1","pages":"43 - 51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2014.933742","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60318173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data come from a survey of dual-earner parenting couples (N = 104), with responses from both spouses. Thus, we have access to two views of the same family and information about both spouses’ work. We find differences and similarities in the spillover (e.g. a wife’s work influences her family experiences) and crossover (e.g. a wife’s work influences her husband’s family experiences) of work into family life for parents. Mothers’ job satisfaction is associated with family cohesion for both mothers (spillover) and fathers (crossover). The perceived negative impact of partner’s work on relationships with children is a significant predictor of both parents’ family cohesion (crossover). Results point to the importance of satisfying work that allows parents to nurture relationships with children and workplace policies supporting the family.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"133 - 138"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.871738","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60318302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, three forms of interactions are examined to disentangle their unique associations with relationship satisfaction. Altogether, 1944 married individuals completed questionnaires in a cross-sectional study. Self-report measures of relationship external stress, negative interactions (NIs), positive interactions (PIs), dyadic coping (DC), and relationship satisfaction were assessed. A multigroup path analytical mediation model was used to test whether couple interactions mediate the association between stress and relationship satisfaction. Stress stemming from outside the relationship is highly associated with an increase in NIs and a decrease in DC. Although all interactions covaried significantly with relationship satisfaction, DC outperformed PI and NI. Being supported by the partner in times of need (i.e. after experiencing relationship external stress) seems to be particularly relevant for marital quality.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"110 - 120"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.830633","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a mixed-method approach, it combines qualitative and quantitative methods. During problem-centered interviews feeling ready was argued to be crucial for the decision to have a child. Readiness is considered to be mainly an emotional state of mind and refers not only to the individual itself but also to the partner and to the couple as a unit. Based on the qualitative results, additional questions were included in the ‘Generations and Gender Survey’ allowing to analyze the dimension of being ready also in a national representative dataset. Our quantitative results revealed that the feeling of being ready has additional explanatory power for childbearing intentions among childless men and women in Austria. Emotional factors such as the feeling of being ready are often neglected although they might broaden the understanding of the family formation process.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"20 1","pages":"139 - 147"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.871739","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This exploratory paper examines the relationship between marital status, social resources and loneliness for older people in Wales in three different settings: residential care, extracare sheltered housing and in the community. The results showed that extracare environments provided the conditions for increased social interaction, and this was particularly effective for older widows. However, there was no difference in the levels of loneliness between the three environments. Although the level of social interactions was greater in extracare settings, the exchanges did not necessarily lead to high-quality and emotionally satisfying social relationships. Older widows who talked about friends referred to those people with whom relationships had been developed outside of the facilities. The paper concludes with some implications for families and formal care providers in terms of supporting older people to maintain long-term friendships.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"121 - 132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.870811","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alzheimer’s is probably one of the most relevant, in terms of complexity of treatment and of costs for health care systems. Several studies highlight how the effects of this neurological disease weigh down patients, caregivers, families and society, and probably more complex options of treatment have to be arranged in order to prevent the negative outcomes that are indirectly but strictly related to the disease. In this respect, it is suggested to pay special attention to the consequences on caregivers’ health due to their intense and prolonged assistance. Given that most caregivers are relatives of patients affected by Alzheimer’s, their burden of care should be properly contextualised in the relational context in which it takes place. Theoretical and clinical models of family functioning might shed light on those dysfunctional interactions and reactions to illness which could escalate the psychological distress of caregivers and other family members. Such an understanding might also have tangible consequences on treatment options, where the involvement of family members in psychological and medical treatment could be beneficial for reducing family distress and caregiver burden.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"161 - 168"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.871741","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60318095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This investigation examined both facilitation and conflict between home and work in a sample of 260 working mothers with children up to four years of age. Potential home domain predictors of burnout were examined, using structural equation modeling. A neglected home-related variable is satisfaction with substitute childcare. Thus, a new scale was developed to measure satisfaction with infant day care centers. Results show a substantial influence of home-based variables, thus supporting the need for inclusion of such variables. Parenting appraisals are related to home–work conflict and facilitation, and ultimately show the expected associations with burnout. Satisfaction with infant day care influences burnout through parenting stress and satisfaction with the parental role. These results are discussed in the light of existing literature and implications for practice are considered.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"148 - 160"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.871740","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60318047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, we examine how mother-reported perceived global and parenting-specific social support interact with economic strain and child negative affectivity in the prediction of maternal depressive symptoms and parenting stress. We also examine the extent to which both forms of social support interact with mothers’ familism support beliefs. Findings indicate that parenting-specific social support interrupts the positive associations between economic strain and negative child affect and maternal depressive symptoms, above and beyond the influence of global social support. Moreover, the combination of high familism beliefs and global social support reduces risks for maternal depressive symptoms.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"109 - 98"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.807294","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60316453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
