Participants included 193 Italian young adults along with their parents and friends (one male and one female) who each reported on their own self-enhancement and self-transcendence values. Results showed that young adults were more similar to their friends than to their parents on mean levels of values. Females reported valuing self-transcendence more and self-enhancement less than males. Considering correlational similarity, male young adults' self-transcendence values were similar to their parents' values, whereas their self-enhancement values were similar to those of friends and parents. Female young adults' self-enhancement values were similar to their parents' values; no similarity to friends was found. Findings suggest the importance of considering gender differences when studying the links between young adults' value orientations and those of parents and friends.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"3 1","pages":"34 - 45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2011.704772","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60315208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The general aim of this three-generational study was to measure parent-child value similarity, removing the effect of the social-cultural context in order to uncover that value similarity that stems from the unique and specific relationship between members of a family. Participants were 381 Italian family triads (father, mother, and one adolescent child); for 257 families one grandmother was also involved. Subjects completed the Portrait Values Questionnaire. Findings empirically showed the strong interaction between family and social-cultural context in determining the level of value similarity.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"3 1","pages":"46 - 54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2011.671499","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60315131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whereas high parent-child value similarity among majority families more likely indicates successful internalization of societal values, high intergenerational similarity among migrants may indicate a lack of social integration into the host society. The present paper links parent-adolescent value similarity among migrant/minority and majority families to subjective well-being in two societies, Germany and Israel (Total N = 977 families). Analyses assess intergenerational similarity on all values from the Schwartz value circumplex. Among majority groups intergenerational value similarity is a predictor of life satisfaction. In minority groups it is more so a low distance of a family's value preferences to the modal values of the majority group that predicts life satisfaction – but only in Israel.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"3 1","pages":"55 - 63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2011.671502","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60315198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sample consisted of N = 73 dyads of mothers and their 12–25–year-old children (51 daughters, 22 sons) living in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Mothers and adolescents/emerging adults reported on their general value orientations; in addition, adolescents/emerging adults reported on emotional relationship quality toward mothers. In a subsample of n = 46 mother-adolescent/emerging adult dyads, additional information was available regarding maternal socialization goals, adolescents'/emerging adults' perceptions of these goals, and adolescents'/emerging adults' perceived value similarity with mothers. Attachment/closeness of adolescents/emerging adults toward their mothers was related to higher, whereas dislike and worry were related to lower value consensus/congruence. Furthermore, dislike was linked to lower accuracy of value perception, whereas closeness/attachment and worry corresponded with higher perceived similarity to mothers.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"3 1","pages":"12 - 4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2011.671496","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60315021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its major proposition is that in economically developing countries with a collectivistic background a family model of emotional interdependence emerges from a family model of complete interdependence. The current study aims to identify and compare patterns of family-related value orientations related to family change theory across three cultures and two generations. Overall, N = 919 dyads of mothers and their adolescent children from Germany, Turkey, and India participated in the study. Three clusters were identified representing the family models of independence, interdependence, and emotional interdependence, respectively. Especially the identification of an emotionally interdependent value pattern using a person-oriented approach is an important step in the empirical validation of family change theory. The preference for the three family models differed across as well as within cultures and generations according to theoretical predictions. Dyadic analyses pointed to substantial intergenerational similarities and also to differences in family models, reflecting both cultural continuity as well as change in family-related value orientations.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"3 1","pages":"64 - 74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2011.671503","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60315203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There were three main findings. First, there was large variability in the quality and quantity of language used during linguistic interactions between low-income fathers and their toddlers. Second, fathers with higher levels of education had children who spoke more (i.e. utterances) and had more diverse vocabularies (i.e. word types) than fathers with lower levels of education. However, fathers with more depressive symptoms had children with less grammatically complex language (i.e. smaller MLUs) than fathers with fewer depressive symptoms. In addition to the direct transmission, this study investigates two alternative routes of parental influences: (1) an indirect link between parents’ and children's value orientations via parenting behaviors (based on the identification perspective) and (2) a direct link between parenting behaviors and children's value orientations, independent of parents’ value orientations (based on the need (dis)satisfaction perspective). Regression and dominance analyses were conducted on a three-wave longitudinal dataset of 295 Dutch intact families spanning 10 years. We found direct mother-to-emerging adult transmissions on self-determination; direct father-to-mid adolescent and emerging adult transmissions on work ethic and political traditionalism; indirect parent-to-adolescent transmissions on work ethic and political traditionalism via parental conformity demands; and an independent negative influence of parental autonomy granting on emerging adults’ work ethic and political traditionalism. Apparently, adolescents’ and emerging adults’ values not only reflect their parents’ values, but also their parents’ parenting practices.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"3 1","pages":"22 - 33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2012.716207","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60315616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected over an eight-month period using the qualitative action-project method. Data included joint parent–youth conversations, video recall interviews, and self-report logs. Detailed within-case analysis of the elements, functional steps, and goals revealed the parenting project each parent was engaged in. Comparing across cases, similar parenting projects were grouped together into three sets: (a) striving for child–environment fit: forecasting, coordinating, and assessing; (b) pressing for acceptable change: stepping back or stepping up; and (c) separating: adjusting relations and managing emotions. These descriptive findings illustrate the complexity of parenting during the transition to adulthood and how parenting projects are jointly constructed between parents and young adult children.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"2 1","pages":"250 - 261"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2012.698995","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60315391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article is based on the premise that there is a confluence of factors in Spain – such as its historical legacy and the familism embedded in the cultural framework and lack of family policies, which has contributed to producing a model of unequal gender relations in WFB. In order to test this hypothesis, we carried out a descriptive comparative analysis of family policies (childcare services and parental leave) as well as two statistical cluster analyses using data from module 5 of the 2005 European Labour Force Survey (ELFS) and the 2008 Eurobarometer (EB) in order to analyse the work–family arrangements and dilemmas by a group of European countries. The main finding derived from this empirical data is that different models of family policies prevailing in different countries have had unequal effects on WFB by gender. In particular in the Spanish case, the lack of public policies addressing WFB and family culture has reinforced the role of the mother and family as the main caregivers.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"2 1","pages":"262 - 276"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2012.708152","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60315666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
