Couple and family instruments used in grief research are reviewed. These were found to be well-validated and are usually popular in family research. In addition, qualitative research on family grief is reviewed to provide a more dynamic and interactive perspective. Finally, recommendations for further development of family grief assessment instruments are proposed. For future bereavement research, we suggest the use of multidimensional assessments, a multi-method, multi-informant, and multi-level approach to grasp the complex interactions of grief in the couple and family context.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"66 - 78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.821761","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study answers this and related research questions on parental bereavement and divorce. In addition to estimating an excess risk of divorce for bereaved parents, I test whether there are differences in the bereavement effect on divorce risk by family size, time since bereavement, and whether the couple has had another child. Detailed longitudinal data on first marriages taken from administrative registers covering the entire population of Norway and discrete-time hazard models are used to estimate effects of a child’s death on divorce risk. Results show that bereaved parents have higher divorce rates than other parents. This difference is observed across several family sizes and strengthens somewhat over time. Post-bereavement fertility does not affect the increase in divorce risk.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"79 - 86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.821762","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They consider the implications for family members of changed income streams, immediate expenses such as funeral costs and bills and debts outstanding from a period of costly family care. Managing adjustments in household budgeting may have impact on quality of family life and relationships. Economic practicalities often mean new roles and responsibilities within the family which influence emotional and psychological experiences and consequences of bereavement. The authors conclude by considering ways forward in developing economic support for bereaved families and the role of financial institutions, government and bereavement services.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"59 - 65"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.819680","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Viewed systemically, grief may or may not be expressed similarly among family members, based upon the impact of a death on them as well as the meaning they attribute to this death. These intra-family differences are a function of how family members interact and communicate, in part consistent with the developmental phase at which families as intergenerational entities are functioning, wherein developmental shifts in family dynamics may also predict of individual grief over time. The therapeutic and research implications of a systems approach to grief are also discussed here.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"50 - 58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.819679","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focus on three aspects of parent–child relationships: support, criticism and dependence. Widowed persons report significantly less criticism from and more dependence upon children than do married controls, although effects are conditional upon characteristics of the late marriage. Among the bereaved, marital warmth is associated with high levels of support from children post-loss, whereas marital strains are associated with less emotional support from and dependence on children. Widow(er)s who were highly dependent on their late spouse report lower levels of criticism from children. We discuss implications for bereavement and intergenerational relations in later life.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"37 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.819678","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60316980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pervasive model of suppressed and privatized grieving became entrenched in the English psyche for the next 30 years and inevitably reduced the involvement of the family.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"17 1","pages":"11 - 4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.819224","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60316961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is not. We need to explore bereavement in families in diverse cultures – to make sense of unique aspects of grieving in those cultures, including the diverse cultures/ethnic groups in economically developed countries. Three examples of what might be gained from understanding specific relational grief phenomena from other cultures are offered: energy transfer in bereavement, the dead as active among the living and dangerous witches as causes of death. In addition, to understand grief in the family context across cultures, we must be sensitive to cultural differences in what is family and what is grief. Also, there is the question of whether family systems thinking makes sense in diverse cultures. The answer is ‘yes’, for many reasons, including that people in many cultures pay close attention to family matters.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"12 - 19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.819226","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A major aim is to extend coverage from individual to social – in particular interactive – perspectives. We not only illustrate how such approaches complement each other, but also how different conclusions can be reached when interactive phenomena are examined. Intrapersonal studies are first reviewed, covering grief reactions as well as the range of health consequences and risk factors, including intrapersonal coping processes. Results attest to the severe impact of this type of loss across multiple dimensions of parents’ lives. More social approaches are then reviewed. The impact of a child’s death has been shown across diverse social phenomena (which also affect individual grief and grieving), including informal and professional support patterns, effects on the couple’s relationship and on couple coping and communication. Finally, attention is focused on one social dimension in particular, namely, interactive coping processes. We describe our own initial research within this domain, on a phenomenon identified as partner-oriented self regulation (POSR; holding in grief for the partner’s sake). The paradoxical results on POSR (its negative consequences for the partner as well as self) highlight the inherent social – as well as personal – nature of grief and bereavement. Implications for future research are outlined.","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"4 1","pages":"28 - 36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.819229","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, while there has been enormous expansion of research over the past few decades on manifestations and phenomena associated with grief and grieving of individual bereaved persons or categories of bereaved persons, research at the family level has lagged behind. With a few valuable exceptions, the available research in the latter domain has also appeared in diverse sources, scattered across different disciplines, and is thus difficult to synthesize for the interested reader. This suggests the need for synthesis and review of research on bereavement in the family context. There are a number of reasons why we think that a family perspective is important. In addition to the fact that death of a loved one is in itself an interpersonal event, one which affects individuals who live in a social context, the actual grieving process too incorporates important interpersonal components: People do not typically grieve alone; each member of a family is affected (in different ways) by the loss of one of its members, and these persons interact with each other in the process of coming to terms with their loss. Family and individual processes can be expected to interact in intricate ways. For example, it is understood that family dynamics (e.g. conflicted relationships to other surviving family members and to the deceased) affects the course of each person’s adjustment to their loss, while at the same time, the individual reaction of a family member may have ramifications that are experienced throughout the family, affecting dynamics at this interpersonal level too. Also, there are interpersonal as well as intrapersonal consequences associated with bereavement: for example, not only are there individual outcomes relating to mental","PeriodicalId":89367,"journal":{"name":"Family science","volume":"81 1","pages":"1 - 3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19424620.2013.819223","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60317230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
