Using cross-sectional data, the results indicated similarities as well as differences between African Americans and Whites in the consequences of parental alcohol use for adult offspring. For both groups, parents’ drinking was positively associated with offsprings’ drinking. And for both groups, parents’ alcohol problems were associated with offsprings’ alcohol misuse. Differences between the two racial groups emerged with respect to paternal behavior. When fathers had alcohol problems, African American offspring consumed less alcohol, overall, but were more likely to misuse alcohol. This pattern was not observed among Whites. For African Americans and Whites, income was positively related to alcohol use, age was negatively related to alcohol use, and men consumed more alcohol than women. Employment, however, was positively associated with alcohol misuse among African Americans and negatively associated with alcohol misuse among Whites.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":88662,"journal":{"name":"Race & society : Official journal of the Association of Black Sociologists","volume":"3 1","pages":"Pages 61-74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S1090-9524(01)00021-3","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"56407541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By investigating entrepreneurial needs, we proscribe a practices-based solution. This strategy suggests that successful practices must be viewed as building blocks for developing successful programs. To put it another way, the program becomes the “house that the practices built”, permitting the kind of flexibility needed to meet the challenges of enterprise development in the complex and constantly changing global economy in any given context.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":88662,"journal":{"name":"Race & society : Official journal of the Association of Black Sociologists","volume":"3 1","pages":"Pages 75-90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S1090-9524(01)00022-5","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136482918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While Frankenberg has argued that Whites must break with the dominant colorblind view of race in order to be successfully active antiracists, these data demonstrate that this is not always the case. Challenging Frankenberg’s work with White women, this sample of both White men and women uses the social movements concept of “framing” to further inform her categories of white racial discourse. This is done by investigating how two organizations frame antiracist activism differently, and analyzing how this divergent framing results in two competing ideologies of white antiracism: reflexive race cognizance, which does not engage with colorblindness, and selective race cognizance, which selectively does so. Exploring how colorblind discourse is used as strategy by movement members, the study concludes with implications for antiracist theory and practice. The findings are important for scholars, teachers, and activists alike.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":88662,"journal":{"name":"Race & society : Official journal of the Association of Black Sociologists","volume":"3 1","pages":"Pages 41-59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S1090-9524(01)00020-1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"56407479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In doing this, they looked to western Christianity, African-American theology, and their own experience of suffering as sources of inspiration, while creating a new religious culture and political orientation to liberate their people from European domination. Hence, Black Theology is in fact an anti-ruling class ideology designed to subvert the existing sociopolitical order. This study examines that ideology treating it as a case study and using Gramscian theory as an interpretive grid. Moreover, it argues that Black Theology informs Gramsci and in so doing, identifies four specific contributions that Christianity is capable of making to a cultural revolution, which include a moral standard, a structured community, an emancipatory language, and a divinely inspired comment to the struggle.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":88662,"journal":{"name":"Race & society : Official journal of the Association of Black Sociologists","volume":"2 2","pages":"Pages 165-193"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S1090-9524(00)00014-0","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"56406997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
