We define telepractice and its two modes of delivery (i.e., synchronous and asynchronous). We detail a technology, web-Oral Reading for Language in Aphasia (web-ORLA™), developed to provide aphasia treatment intensively from a distance and subsequently evaluated during a clinical trial. In this article, we describe our experiences using web-ORLA™, highlighting the role of the speech-language pathologist (SLP) and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of this unique combination of synchronous and asynchronous telepractice. Web-ORLA™ was delivered to PWAs in their homes by a digital agent, or “virtual therapist,” who served as a model and provided instructions similarly to a real therapist. An SLP at a distant geographical location monitored the sessions remotely, either synchronously or asynchronously, provided feedback, made appropriate adjustments to the difficulty level of the stimuli, and conducted weekly pr...","PeriodicalId":88628,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives on neurophysiology and neurogenic speech and language disorders","volume":"21 1","pages":"83-93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1044/NNSLD21.3.83","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57669264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Treating Attention To Improve Auditory Comprehension Deficits Associated With Aphasia 治疗注意力以改善失语症相关的听觉理解缺陷

{"title":"Treating Attention To Improve Auditory Comprehension Deficits Associated With Aphasia","authors":"N. helm-estabrooks","doi":"10.1044/NNSLD21.2.64","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1044/NNSLD21.2.64","url":null,"abstract":"Auditory comprehension is rarely unaffected by aphasia, although the extent of these deficits ranges greatly. Regardless of the severity of the deficit, however, problems understanding spoken language have a notable impact on individuals' lives. Speech-language pathologists, therefore, are obligated to employ effective approaches to remediating these problems. This paper addresses ways to treat auditory comprehension starting with a careful examination that identifies preserved and disturbed areas of function and that leads clinicians to think about underlying mechanisms that might be responsible for success and failures. Several lines of evidence support the idea that attentional problems may account for at least some of what appear to be problems with comprehension of spoken language in people with aphasia (PWA). Despite the growing body of evidence that a strong relationship exists between attention and auditory comprehension performance, the prevailing approach to treating auditory comprehension defic...","PeriodicalId":88628,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives on neurophysiology and neurogenic speech and language disorders","volume":"21 1","pages":"64-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1044/NNSLD21.2.64","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57669679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
