Assistive technology for cognition (ATC) includes the use of these same systems to compensate for common cognitive challenges following ABI. And although the use of mainstream technologies in this population is a potential boon, it can be difficult for rehabilitation professionals to keep up with the changing world of devices, operating systems, and applications (apps). This article provides an overview of devices and apps currently used as ATC and provides guidelines for device and app selection and a framework for facilitating meta-cognition and generalization through the ATC instruction process. They are especially fearful that these memory lapses signal the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). For some, the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents a transitional state between normal aging and early dementia that precipitates a search for therapies to prevent conversion to AD. The purpose of this article is to describe a continuum of therapeutic approaches for the cognitive challenges experienced by persons with MCI, discuss the growing evidence for promising techniques to address these challenges, and outline a university-based memory strategies intervention program that incorporates several effective strategies.","PeriodicalId":88628,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives on neurophysiology and neurogenic speech and language disorders","volume":"23 1","pages":"1-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1044/NNSLD23.1.23","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57669747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Advocacy and prevention are part of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA’s) scope of practice documents, and speech-language pathologists must have basic awareness of the evidence contributing to healthy cognitive aging. In this article, we provide a brief overview outlining the evidence on activity engagement and its effects on cognition in older adults. We explore the current evidence around the activities of eating and drinking with a discussion on the potential benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, polyphenols, alcohol, and coffee. We investigate the evidence on the hypothesized neuroprotective effects of social activity, the evidence on computerized cognitive training, and the emerging behavioral and neuroimaging evidence on physical activity. We conclude that actively aging using a combination of several ...","PeriodicalId":88628,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives on neurophysiology and neurogenic speech and language disorders","volume":"23 1","pages":"1-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57669759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
