Reflection is related to an understanding of reflexivity which is not solely personal, but also institutional and social. This insight is pursued through an exploration of Graham, Walton and Ward's book Theological Reflection: Methods, where Giddens' reflexivity can be found to relate to the methods explored. This is seen in three key areas: the different scales of social life; the process of bringing into consciousness; and tradition.","PeriodicalId":87951,"journal":{"name":"Contact","volume":"35 1","pages":"22 - 31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81688734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method roots the discipline of theological reflection within the practice of student ministers as part of their prayerful discernment of God's ways of working and their own roles. The steps of the method are outlined in this article using an example from the author's work with student ministers on an exchange to John Wesley College, Pretoria. In the process some general observations are made about the teaching of models of theological reflection.","PeriodicalId":87951,"journal":{"name":"Contact","volume":"132 1","pages":"19 - 32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89473861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper argues that, contrary to popular Christian perception, this piece of musical theatre warrants appreciative study. The contentious burlesque portrayal of key characters is set in a broader cultural and historical perspective. Its theological aspects are often profound, although not wholly unproblematic. It is suggested that the production lifts the veil on ways in which Christian doctrine is received by the wider public and that it invites further reflection, particularly around issues of hell and eschatological exclusion.","PeriodicalId":87951,"journal":{"name":"Contact","volume":"3 2","pages":"32 - 41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91473043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patterns of lay involvement are examined and lay initiatives are encouraged. Modes of leadership which encourage dependency are critiqued and an alternative model of the mutual interplay of dependence, independence and interdependence, rooted in Trinitarian theology, is offered. It pleads for the urban context of society to be central to that task because that is where most people actually live. It asks for the practical nature of theology to be the focus of training. That is admirable. There are, however, issues behind what appear to be relatively simple adjustments to training programmes that need attention if that aim is ever to be fulfilled. Three of these are: the nature of identity in British multiculturalism, the inability to engage in dialogue that ends in practical expression within the churches, and the apparent tussle between ‘academic’ theology and the business of getting on with loving one's neighbour.","PeriodicalId":87951,"journal":{"name":"Contact","volume":"18 1","pages":"31 - 39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80471575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
