Pastoral Theology as Attention

Summary This paper outlines the action-reflection method, Pastoral Theology as Attention, which is a tried and tested method that has been used in supervision and the teaching of pastoral theology in the Cambridge Theological Federation for the last eight years. The method roots the discipline of theological reflection within the practice of student ministers as part of their prayerful discernment of God's ways of working and their own roles. The steps of the method are outlined in this article using an example from the author's work with student ministers on an exchange to John Wesley College, Pretoria. In the process some general observations are made about the teaching of models of theological reflection.
