Idris","doi":"10.4314/bajopas.v14i2.7","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4314/bajopas.v14i2.7","url":null,"abstract":"Tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus) is known in Nigeria as aya in Hausa, “Ofio” in Yoruba and “Aki Hausa” in Igbo, is an edible perennial grass-like plant. Tiger nut tubers can be eaten snacked, roasted, fried or baked and liquid (Kunun aya). Tiger nut contain lipid, protein, and carbohydrate (fiber and starch included). Tiger nut can be used to ‘mop up’ and scavenge free-radicals generated by essential metabolic body reactions and environmental pollutants. The major route of aluminium elimination is by the kidneys.Due to its reactivity, aluminum in nature is found only in combination with other elements like chlorine as in aluminum chloride (AlCl3). Al compound are used in a variety of foodstuffs, medications, domestic water supplies, kitchen equipments. herbs and cosmetics. If the kidney cannot excrete Al, it will accumulate in the body. The aim of this work was to evaluate the protective effects of tiger nut against aluminium chloride induced renal histopathology in the kidney of wistar rats. Twenty adult males and females wistar rats weighing 80 – 170g were grouped into 4. Group 1 - Control group, received normal saline for 14 days, Group 2 – received 1250mg of liquid tiger (ethanolic extract) nut extract daily by oral route for 14days. Group 3 – received aqueous aluminium chloride 500mg/kg followed by 2500mg/kg of liquid tiger nut extract daily by oral route for 14days and Group 4 – received aqueous aluminium chloride 500mg/kg followed by 3750mg/kg of liquid tiger nut extract daily by oral route for 14days. After sacrifice and tissue processing, groups 1 and 2 presented normal renal histology while groups 3 and 4 presented normal renal histology with lymphocytes between their distal convoluted tubules around the medulla. It was concluded that tiger nut has an ameliorative effect on AlCl3 induced histomorphological changes in the histology of kidney and it has no any negative effect on the histology of kidney.","PeriodicalId":8734,"journal":{"name":"Bayero Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":"80 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80027684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of the research was to carry out preliminary phytochemical and antimicrobial screening of the methanol fractions of the leaf of Gmelina arborea. The methanol leaf extract and its fractions were screened for phytochemical and antimicrobial activity using standard procedures. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, phenolic compounds, triterpenes and steroids. Highest zone of inhibition was observed in ethyl acetate fraction with (29mm) against some tested clinical pathogens compared to other fractions screened. MIC ranged between (6.25-12.5mg/ml) was observed in ethyl acetate. MBC of (12.5mg/ml) was observed in ethyl acetate fraction compared to other fractions screened. This study supports the folkloric claims for the use of the plant against some bacterial infections and can be exploited as alternative antimicrobial drug use for the treatment of infectious disease caused by these pathogens.","PeriodicalId":8734,"journal":{"name":"Bayero Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":"201 2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91222176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Blood samples were screened for Hepatitis B virus (HBV) using Diagnostic kit for HBV infection marker in whole blood. Hepatitis B serological markers were determined using polymerase chain reaction and confirmed. The socio-demographic factors associated with HBV infection were determined using structured questionnaires. The total prevalence rates of the five (5) HBV markers were: HBsAg 12(7.3%), HBsAb 5(3.0%), HBeAb 12(7.3%), HBcAb 18(10.9%), and all blood samples were negative for HBeAg. HBVDNA was detected in 3 out of 10 samples. Two out of the three samples were positive for HBsAg, HBeAb and HBcAb whereas one sample was positive for HBsAg, HBsAb and HBcAb. The high prevalence of HBcAb (10.9%) among HBsAg+ (7.3%) and (3.6%) among HBsAg- in this survey indicates that the virus is actively replicating in chronic HBV carriers and consistently increasing the spread within the population in the areas that are targeted.","PeriodicalId":8734,"journal":{"name":"Bayero Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":"396 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74945730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study employed direct digitization using latest Google Earth Image (version 10.3) and National Space Research Development Agency (NASRDA) land use map of the state. Simple descriptive statistics was also used to evaluate units of ecosystems indentified. The results revealed 16 ecosystems of land units within Kano terrestrial ecosystems. Mapping of the study area also revealed anthropogenic cultivation ecosystem Major category of 18,542km2 representing 89% while aquatic ecosystem covered a total 506 km2 with altitude elevation of 480above the sea level (a.s.l.). Shelterbelts and wind breaks were 458 - 498 a.s.l. with >100 approximate number of patches. Results were discussed and concluded as Kano ecosystem land use attributes revealed an interdependence of units with major terrestrial and minor aquatic ecosystems with the serious anthropogenic interferences which result in systemic loss of valuable units of ecosystems, ecosystem services and biodiversity components. Therefore, government should embark on mass awareness campaign on proper land use and sustainable environmental policies framework in the state should be enacted.","PeriodicalId":8734,"journal":{"name":"Bayero Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":"94 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77531382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, the present study focused on the assessment of the heavy metal concentrations in the water from Mairua dam. This research reveals the concentrations of the selected toxic metals (Pb, Cd, Co, Cr and Ni) in water samples. The following trend was observed across the sampling points; Co> Cr> Cd> Ni> Pb. The concentrations of Pb across the sampling points were within the WHO (2011) permissible limits. However the Cd concentrations across the sampling points were within the WHO limits of 0.003 mg/kg with exemption of W1, W2, W3, W4, W5, W8 and W10 respectively. Similarly the concentrations of Co in the analyzed water samples were all above WHO (2011) tolerable limits of 0.01 mg/kg. The elevated level of cobalt in the water may be attributed to leachates from farmlands and domestic waste. The concentrations of Cr across the sampling points were within the WHO (2011) permissible limits of 0.005 mg/kg with exemption of samples W2, W3, W4, W7, W8, W10 and W11 respectively. However, the concentrations of Ni across the sampling points were higher than WHO (2011) permissible limits of 0.01 mg/kg. Nickel is introduced into the environment from both natural and man-made sources. The results obtained for Contamination Factors reveals low contamination (Cf<1) with an exemption of Cd in points W1 and W2. PLI denotes no pollution and Hazard quotient values also showed that the analyzed water has no potential health effects with exemption to Cd. The results also shows that there was no significant difference in the analyzed samples at p<0.005 across the sampling sites. Pollution of the water by Cd may be as a result of anthropogenic activities that are released into the dam. It is recommended to periodically monitor the water.","PeriodicalId":8734,"journal":{"name":"Bayero Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89413337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Parinari polyandra also known as Maranthes is a savannah tree with very conspicuous whitish or pinkish flowers in dense and flattened panicles at the end of the branches. Parinari polyandra is about 8m high with a gnarled and twisted bore. Leaves are 6-13cm long by 3-8cm broad; usually round at both ends and sometimes with a very short pointed tip, leathery dark green and glossy on its top. This present study is aimed at investigating the phytochemicals present in n-hexane extract of the stem bark using FTIR and GCMS spectroscopy. The phytochemical analysis reveals the presence of alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, terpenoid, steroids, tannins and saponins. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) result reveals the presence of aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, amines, phenols, alkenes, anhydride, aliphatic and aromatic compounds. The Gas Chromatography- Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) chromatogram indicated that the n-hexane extracts contain 20 compounds as indicated that could be associated with their pharmacological properties. This study justifies the ethno medicinal uses of the plants stem bark for the treatment of various ailment due to the presence of some phytochemical constituents that found uses in pharmacology.","PeriodicalId":8734,"journal":{"name":"Bayero Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences","volume":"89 8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86494943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
