This tendency affirms traditionally female concerns in a specifically feminist value framework which I have called the ‘integrative feminine principle.≐ The paper argues that the development of this alternative value framework marks the shift of feminism from a politics of pressure representing the interests of a specific group to a complete alternative politics with reference to the whole of society and with universal relevance for the shape and direction of progressive struggle in general in this period.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":85875,"journal":{"name":"Women's studies international quarterly","volume":"4 4","pages":"Pages 481-495"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0148-0685(81)96044-9","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86149280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some feminists have argued that we cannot, and that we must, therefore, look to other methods. This paper examines the problem. First we examine the structure of value—oriented just—in the sense of social justice—theory. Feminist theory, we claim, is a subset of just theory with an additional criterion that it be consciousness-raising. Consciousness-raising here is defined as a conviction based on evidence that sexual equality is a viable option in human history. Two examples of just theory are examined: Myrdal's research on racial equality and peace research. A third method, simulation, is examined. Simulation offers the best possibility of transcending historical inequality without sacrificing the strength of the empirical tradition. In terms of the intellectual skills required, simulation is the most androgynous, and, thus, the method of the future.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":85875,"journal":{"name":"Women's studies international quarterly","volume":"4 1","pages":"Pages 1-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0148-0685(81)96298-9","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75770270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing upon interview data, this paper reports the experiences of 18 of the women students during their first undergraduate year. The students speak for themselves in explaining why they sought admission, how they coped with family responsibilities, and how their expectations and the realities of student life differed. It is suggested that if the intellectual aspirations of many older women are to be satisfied then universities will need to open their doors wider and actively encourage their admission. They will also need to review their teaching and assessment procedures.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":85875,"journal":{"name":"Women's studies international quarterly","volume":"4 2","pages":"Pages 117-131"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0148-0685(81)92810-4","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77896966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
