Abstract
In 1975, the University of New South Wales admitted a group of 63 mature age unmatriculated students. Drawing upon interview data, this paper reports the experiences of 18 of the women students during their first undergraduate year. The students speak for themselves in explaining why they sought admission, how they coped with family responsibilities, and how their expectations and the realities of student life differed. It is suggested that if the intellectual aspirations of many older women are to be satisfied then universities will need to open their doors wider and actively encourage their admission. They will also need to review their teaching and assessment procedures.
