\u0000 \u0000 \u0000ENGELSK ABSTRACT: \u0000 \u0000Anders Petersen: Diagnostic Culture – Depression as a Seismograph for Contemporary Times \u0000 \u0000This article discusses the development of a diagnostic culture. A diagnostic culture is characterized by the fact that not only professionals (doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc.), but also laymen and the general public use psychiatric diagnoses and categories for understanding psychiatric disorders. The question then is how this logic has been able to anchor itself in the overall nexus of society. In this article, I explain how the transition from dynamic to diagnostic psychiatry has paved part of the way for the societal anchoring of a diagnostic culture. I also argue that this perspective should be expanded in order to provide a more nuanced picture. To do that I employ diagnostic sociology – a branch of sociology whose primary subject is diagnoses and what they can tell us about diverse social developments, processes, and especially the contemporary epoch in which we live. I use symptoms of the contemporary diagnosis of depression to analyze and clarify how the diagnosis of depression can be seen as a seismograph of our current epoch. The article aims to contribute to a better understanding of the presences of the diagnostic culture as well as analyzing which type of ideal self that contemporary society strives to be. \u0000 \u0000Keywords: Diagnostic Culture, depression, self-realization, diagnosis of the times, sociology of diagnosis.

This is due to the Greenlandic criminal code from 1954. Prisons had no place in this criminal code – nor in Greenland. The link between guilt and punishment was broken and measures were to be chosen based on what best served the re-entry of the offender into society. Instead of serving a sentence in prison, the country’s offenders were to serve in open institutions in order to retain the connection to the surrounding community. \u0000Now Greenland is expected to open its first prison in 1917, and the idea of Greenland as the country without prisons will be history. However even before the first prison is built, Greenland ranks as the 33rd most punishing country in the world with 309 inmates per 100,000 inhabitants. The purpose is to show how and why Nuuk is contested and how this perspective has changed over time. Using the concept of landscape defined as a relation between the foreground (the way we are now) and background (how we could be) of social life, the article demonstrates how this perspective of the town is connected with the political development in the country. The anti-urban narrative was dominant from the late 1960s when towns were associated with “Danishness” and alienation, but it was increasingly replaced by a more inclusive and complex “Greenlandicness” from around 2000. In landscape terminology it appeared that people lived incompatible “Danish” everyday lives in towns, but dreamt about another life more in agreement with Greenlandic traditions and values. While foreground and background used to be far apart, they have come closer as the town has been appropriated as a Greenlandic landscape. Thus the status of Nuuk has changed towards increasing approval. However, Nuuk is also criticized for carrying on a Danish policy of dominance and centralizing. In this sense it is still considered “a piece of Denmark on rocks”. \u0000Keywords: Greenland, Nuuk, urban studies, landscapes, migration.

Analysis of these interviews uncovered the social workers’ feelings of despair and their atomised sense of loneliness because of having no references to an external network of professionals (e.g. through a union). Pathological gambling is used as an example of the high prevalence of social problems that proposes a current challenge in modern Greenland. The association between pathological gambling, use of alcohol and marijuana is also analyzed. Data was collected in towns and villages across Greenland as a part of the international study Inuit Health in Transition. A total of 2454 persons were interviewed and 2189 of these also filled out a self-administered questionnaire. The study shows that the prevalence of pathological gambling is lower among hunters and fishermen in villages and professionals in towns than in other social groups. In addition the prevalence of harmful use of alcohol and marijuana among pathological gamblers was relatively high. A significant association between pathological gambling and social groups defined by their involvement in the ongoing social transition suggests that people caught between tradition and modern ways of life are especially vulnerable. Furthermore, the association between pathological gambling and other addictive behaviors underlines the importance of a comprehensive approach in understanding these phenomena. \u0000 \u0000Ke
