They were voluntarily transferred to another bus company after this company had won a tender offer from their former employer. 20 drivers from the former employer served as controls. At baseline, 1 month before the transfer, all were monitored for 2 days; blood pressure was measured every 2 hours while awake. On the 1st day, urine samples were collected and blood samples were taken. Eight and 12 months later, a similar data collection took place in the study group. During the follow-up period, 7 drivers in the study group left their job due to dissatisfaction with working conditions and the remaining 13 drivers changed their attitude to the workplace. In accordance with this, the drivers scored worse on questions regarding job satisfaction. Physiological changes measured at 12-month follow-up, showing increases in systolic blood pressure and DHEA-S, suggest that outsourcing and other radical changes in the psychosocial work environment may lead to prolonged stress among employees.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"121 2‐3","pages":"149-160"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50684013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ten males, who had practised meditation for a long time and were participating in a half-marathon race, were studied in a case–control design. The control group was drawn from the pool of applicants to the race who did not practise meditation. Blood samples were taken before, immediately after and 2 h after the race. Immune and blood analysis were conducted. Runners practising meditation had lower lymphocyte counts at rest before the race (p<0.02). Just after the race, both groups more than doubled their white blood cell (wbc) counts (p<0.01); however, no significant effects were observed on the immune cells, neither was any difference between groups seen in the post-exercise period. Long term practice of meditation may influence absolute lymphocyte counts at rest. No effect was observed in the immune response to exercise stress. Four types of groups—normal health (n=74) and three groups of Qi-trainees (group Q1: subjects with CDSB Qi-training for 1–4 months, n=64; Q2: 5–12 months, n=50; Q3: more than 13 months, n=66)—participated in this study. Qi-trainees with over 13 months training had significantly lower scores in all the SOS subscales compared to the controls. A significant negative correlation was found between the Qi-training period and all SOS subscales. The total stress scores of the Qi-trainee groups were substantially lower than those of the controls and there was further reduction with longer training periods. These results suggest CDSB Qi-training is effective in stress management and in decreasing symptoms of stress. In addition to the four main effects, six interaction terms involving all possible two-way combinations of the four main variables were regressed on the dependent variable. While financial strain and vulnerability exert significant negative main effects on immune response as anticipated, these variables interact with one another and with gender to produce complex conditional relationships. The interaction between low education and male gender produces a negative effect on immune response, while financial hardship and vulnerability to stress interact to produce positive effects on immune response. One hundred and five civil aviation pilots were interviewed. Events and difficulties were dated and rated for contextual threat; dating information was also obtained for distress symptoms and air traffic incidents. There were significant relationships between stress and air incidents, between stress and distress, and between distress and incidents. Some symptoms (sleep disturbances, loss of energy and tiredness) were more likely to be associated with reported incidents than others. The results are in line with previous suggestions that the effect of stress on job performance is via distress. Distress-related sleep disturbances may be particularly crucial. Further work using contextual stress measurement is needed to clarify the causal pathways involved. There is widespread evidence that working hours and job stress may explain these differences. In this study the relationship of job demands and job control to sleep disorders was investigated. The subjects were 3079 middle-aged working men. The data were collected with a questionnaire including scales on sleep quality, job stress and lifestyle. The main effects of job demands and job control on insomnia, sleep deprivation and daytime fatigue were highly significant. Some interaction effects of the stressors were also noted. Lifestyle factors were not found as significant mediators or confounders of the effects. The associations between the stressors and sleep disorders were greater in the daytime workers than in the shift workers. The main conclusion is that job stressors have a direct relationship to sleep disorders, independent of working hours and lifestyle. The present study investigated direct and indirect effects of uncontrollability on perceived pain intensity in humans. Forty-eight healthy male volunteers participated in a laboratory experiment using a reaction time paradigm to induce controllable or uncontrollable feedback conditions in two randomly selected groups. Under controllable conditions, unpleasant electric skin shocks were applied, only when the actual time exceeded an individual threshold; under uncontrollable conditions, skin shocks were applied randomly using a yoked control design. Subjective helplessness, perceived pain intensity and additional psychological variables were assessed prior to and after the experiment. The results indicate a strong relationship only between the individually perceived helplessness and pain perception (r=+0.62, p<0.0001) independent of objective stimulus controllability. Neither mood states nor personality traits yielded a significant correlation with perceived pain. After uncontrollable shock exposure, subjects described themselves as slightly more helpless and significantly more activated, anxious, and angry (p<0.05). A path analysis revealed only a modest indirect effect of objective uncontrollability on perceived pain intensity, and a strong independent impact of subjective helplessness. The results underline the importance of subjective feelings of helplessness in pain perception, which should be taken into account in further studies. It was proposed that lack of evidence for this core ‘interaction hypothesis’ was a consequence of an inadequate conceptualization of decision latitude. Taking this proposition into consideration, we re-evaluated the JD-C Model using a sample of 517 Dutch truck drivers. Regression analyses revealed a significant job demands by job control interaction effect as well as significant main effects of the two independent variables on psychosomatic health complaints. However, the magnitude of the interaction effect was very small. Therefore, it was concluded that the interaction hypothesis was not supported in the present study. The level of distress was higher in women, especially in those who are not employed according to their level of education, it was also higher in subjects (21.4 per cent) who feel that their life crisis is ongoing, that they are not integrated into society and have a negative experience as a result of immigrati n.
