A transformational strategy for nurse retention, effectiveness, and extra effort.","authors":"Joan Trofino","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Power sharing with staff nurses is an essential strategy for organizational transformation. The current competitive health care environment requires a powerful team of participants, including staff at all levels, to provide health care in mutual partnership. The challenges of today's competitive and global environment call for collegial relationships among nurse executive leadership, middle nurse managers, and staff nurses. Research has demonstrated that middle nurse managers maintain primary responsibility for staff nurse retention. A higher retention rate was reported among nurses who were very satisfied with their nurse managers. Nurses considered favorably nurse managers who value staff contributions, promote information sharing, and exert influence for a stable work environment. Furthermore, as staff nurse satisfaction increased, effectiveness and extra effort also increased when staff nurses perceived transformational leadership strategies. Strategies for power sharing include serving as role models and mentors, energizing staff, resisting attitudes of staff ownership, reducing staff nurse stress of leader presence, and information sharing and commendations at meetings.</p>","PeriodicalId":80103,"journal":{"name":"Nursing leadership forum","volume":"8 2","pages":"64-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24423634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Perceptions of first-line nurse managers. What competencies are needed to fulfill this role?","authors":"W Dean Care,&nbsp;Sonia A Udod","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>First-line nurse managers have experienced an unprecedented shift in their roles and responsibilities as a result of health care reform. Consequently, there is a need to identify competencies required of first-line nurse managers in a changing health care environment. A descriptive, exploratory study of nurse managers in a western Canadian province was conducted using a combined quantitative and qualitative approach. The research instrument was comprised of three parts: a questionnaire that grouped five categories of competencies (technical, human, conceptual, leadership, and financial management); demographic data; and a critical incident technique that allowed the subjects to elaborate on a specific incident in their practice when they \"performed at their best\" as a manager. Findings revealed that nurse managers' need for knowledge and understanding was greater than their ability to implement managerial competencies. The exploration of competencies of first-line nurse managers has implications for curriculum development in leadership and management courses in nursing programs, as well as managerial development in health care agencies. Results will assist educators and administrators in addressing the changing needs of current and future nurse managers.</p>","PeriodicalId":80103,"journal":{"name":"Nursing leadership forum","volume":"7 3","pages":"109-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"23271566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the purposes of that project was to contribute to the confirmation of terms that have already been identified and/or the identification of new terms that might expand the ICNP. As a first phase of the project, quantitative data were collected to describe the research sites and the nursing staff composition; in the second phase, using focus group methodology, qualitative data were collected and analyzed to describe the collective health nursing practices, and to produce a vocabulary inventory of terms related to nursing phenomena and nursing actions in collective health in Brazil. The Nevada Hospital Association and Nevada legislature have supported statewide educational initiatives. Outcomes of a task force include recommendations to improve articulation agreements between schools of nursing and community colleges, external funding for summer salaries for faculty, efforts to recruit and retain minority and other nontraditional students, reallocation of financial resources among all universities and colleges in the state, reexamination of state-mandated faculty-to-student ratios, and changes in the work environment to encourage nurses to remain in the profession. To address this shortage, the Kennesaw State University (KSU) School of Nursing (SON) has developed and implemented a partnership model to offer second-degree students an accelerated BSN Program. The KSU model builds on a competitive statewide initiative that targets funds to educational and corporate collaborations as well as a growing number of nursing school non-nurse applicants who hold other baccalaureate degrees. To offer the accelerated BSN Program, the KSU nursing faculty developed an accelerated curriculum model that allows completion in 16 months. Further, a six member, collaborative partnership has been constructed to allow this curriculum to be offered to 40 second-degree students both on the KSU campus and as an outreach program in rural northwest Georgia.
