Palatogingival groove, a morphological anomaly usually reported on the palatal aspect of maxillary incisors, cause periodontal attachment loss and alveolar bone destruction and finally tooth loss. Unknown etiology was reported for the developmental defect, develops in to pathological condition only when the there is a discontinuity in the epithelial attachment. Early diagnosis and proper selection of therapeutic modalities helps in preservation of involved tooth. Milder cases were treated by saucerization, odontoplasty and strict oral hygiene maintenance protocol. Moderate case was treated by open flap debridement, regenerative applications such as bone graft and membrane placement. PGG restored using various restorative material and seal the morphology. Clinical diagnosis become unnoticed in most cases, hence proper diagnosis and therapeutic interventions are of prime importance in PGG management.","PeriodicalId":77222,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pierre Fauchard Academy (Pierre Fauchard Academy. When inflammatory changes occur in the oral cavity, there is an increase in the level of orogranulocytic migratory rate. The oral neutrophil count may be an indicator of the periodontal health status and also it correlates with the severity of periodontal disease. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship of oral neutrophil counts with severity of chronic periodontal diseases and to estimate their levels in response to phase 1 periodontal therapy. Materials and Methods: A total of 66 subjects were selected from the Departments of Periodontics, Annoor Dental College and Hospital, Kerala, India. The subjects were divided into three groups of 22 subjects in each group with two visits. The groups were diagnosed on the basis of gingival index and the number of periodontal pockets. Oral rinse samples of subjects were taken before and 4 weeks after periodontal treatment ((phase 1). Acridine orange was used to stain the cells in the rinse samples. A fluorescence microscope and hemocytometer was used to count neutrophils. Results: There was significant difference in mean value of oral neutrophils before and after treatment for control, moderate periodontitis and severe periodontitis groups. Conclusion: The oral rinse assay was capable to identify a major decrease in oral neutrophil counts in patients who reacted to periodontal treatment (phase 1 therapy). This method is safe, easy, reliable and noninvasive method of quantification of oral neutrophils.","PeriodicalId":77222,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pierre Fauchard Academy (Pierre Fauchard Academy. In this process many times psychological aspect is overlooked. Hence with this pilot study, importance of psychological aspect of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is emphasised. Methods and Material: 15 patients suffering from pain in TMD region who qualify under myalgia pain in DC/TMD Axis I category were selected. Patients were divided into 3 groups; Ibuprofen, placebo and occlusal splint with 5 patients in each group. Pain assessment was done at the first visit, 7th day visit and 14th day visit using a VAS scale. Statistical Analysis Used: Friedman Test was applied to determine overall relief from pain in the three groups. Wilcoxon sign rank test evaluated pain relief between each time interval. Kruskal Wallis Test compared different groups for relief from pain at each time interval. Key Finding: Wilcoxon sign rank test showed a significant pain relief in all three groups from I day to I follow up day and I day to II follow up day. However Pain relief from I follow up to II follow up day was significant only in placebo group. Conclusions: Management of TMD myalgia requires a comprehensive understanding of physical and psychological aspect. This will aid us in formulating a treatment plan comprising pharmacotherapy, placebo or physical therapy or combination of any of these.","PeriodicalId":77222,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pierre Fauchard Academy (Pierre Fauchard Academy. Gingiva is the frequently affected site for such lesions. Along with the clinical presentation, the histopathological investigation of the lesion plays a crucial role for the confirmation of the diagnosis. This case report deals with the surgical management of pyogenic granuloma and irritational fibroma. The first case is treated by using a modified surgical excision in an attempt to prevent the lesion from recurring. On following of both the cases after one month it was observed that the lesions did not recur. Elimination of the cause along with parental counselling are the essential factors for the successful outcome in such cases.","PeriodicalId":77222,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pierre Fauchard Academy (Pierre Fauchard Academy. It can serve as a deterrent among undergraduate dental students both for their academic and career growth. Behaviour modifications are required to change this negative behaviour and Sense of Coherence is one such approach. Aim: To assess the relationship between Sense of Coherence and Procrastination among a group of undergraduate dental students in Chennai city. Material and Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire study was conducted among 358 undergraduate dental students. Thirteen item Sense of Coherence scale and Lay’s Procrastination scale were used to collect data about Sense of Coherence and Procrastination among undergraduate dental students respectively, using google forms. One-way ANOVA and Independent T test were used to test for difference in mean scores between groups based on year of study and gender, respectively. Pearsons correlation coefficient followed by Simple Linear Regression was performed to test for association between Sense of Coherence and Procrastination. Results: The overall mean Sense of Coherence score of the study participants was 49.52 ± 8.13. The overall mean Procrastination score of the study participants was 56.58 ± 10.02. Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient revealed a negative correlation (r = -.255) between Sense of Coherence and Procrastination (p = .000) indicating that with an increase in Sense of Coherence, Procrastination decreases. In tandem, the third year students with lowest Sense of Coherence score showed highest procrastination. Conclusion: Procrastination is negatively associated with Sense of Coherence and hence behaviour modification interventions based on Sense of Coherence are required, to be customized and incorporated in dental curriculum to reduce procrastination among undergraduate dental students.","PeriodicalId":77222,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pierre Fauchard Academy (Pierre Fauchard Academy. One such medical condition is ‘hydrocephalus’. Hydrocephalus is basically a neurological disorder caused by excessive intracranial pressure due to abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles or subarachnoid space of brain and raised intracranial pressure. Ventriculo-Peritoneal Shunt (VPS) is the most commonly used treatment though ventriculo-atrial shunt is also another treatment option. To maintain the intracranial pressure within normal range, the patients are kept on medications which make them more prone for dental malformations and caries. Because of the poor oral hygiene, these patients require a regular dental care. This report discusses the dental management process employed for a five years old patient having hydrocephalus.","PeriodicalId":77222,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pierre Fauchard Academy (Pierre Fauchard Academy. Increase in life expectancy has increased number of geriatric patients with denture wearer. Several well-documented methods of denture labeling have been reported in the literature, which include surface marking, incorporation techniques using metal or nonmetal materials, and engraving. This case series highlights the rehabilitation of completely edentulous patients using conventional complete denture prostheses equipped with these identification devices, which would be a critical contributor in determining the individual’s identity. All of these denture marking methods were simple, inexpensive, time-saving, less technique sensitive, fire resistant, and aesthetically pleasing to the individual patient.","PeriodicalId":77222,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pierre Fauchard Academy (Pierre Fauchard Academy. Melanomas are most common in the cutaneous region and are rare in the oral cavity. They account for about only 0.5% of all malignant tumors in the oral cavity. Oral Malignant Melanomas may go unnoticed since they are asymptomatic clinically but they are aggressive biologically. In the oral cavity, the hard palate and gingiva are the most common sites of involvement. Melanoma tends to metastasize more faster than other skin cancers. Therefore, early diagnosis of malignant melanoma is necessary. Melanomas that are diagnosed early can be cured with minor surgery and the survival rate and prognosis is better when it is detected earlier. We hereby report a case of a 60-year-old male patient with a complaint of swelling in the gingiva that had diffuse black pigmentation, which was diagnosed as a melanoma.","PeriodicalId":77222,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pierre Fauchard Academy (Pierre Fauchard Academy.
