The present study reports a choriocarcinomatous change with immunocytochemically hCG-positive cells in the gastric carcinoma. The patients were males, one was 41 years old and the other 42 years old. The tumor of both cases consists of adenocarcinoma and choriocarcinoma. A sequential process of morphological transition of the adenocarcinoma to the choriocarcinoma can be traced. Indirect immunoperoxidase stain (PAP method) for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) demonstrates the localization of hCG in the syncytiotrophoblasts. Small number of cytotrophoblasts are weakly positive. None of the components of adenocarcinoma of both cases is positive for hCG. Human placental lactogen is not demonstrated in both cases. Stain for pregnancy specific beta-1 glycoprotein is weakly positive in the adenocarcinoma of one case but not in the choriocarcinoma. In one case, the concentration of hCG was 19.9 mIU/ml in the preoperative serum and decreased to 1.2 mIU/ml after gastrectomy. HCG production by gastric carcinoma was discussed with regard to possible pathogenesis of gastric choriocarcinoma.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. The papilloma cells were clearly demarcated from the stromal tissue by a basement membrane-like material. However, this structure mainly consisted of two or more layers, occasional breaks in the basement membrane were visible. Within the basal epithelial cells resting on the basement membrane accumulations of actin-like microfilaments could sometimes be observed. Furthermore, in the stromal tissue some myofibroblasts were present in the vicinity of the papillomatous cell complexes and capillary vessels also demonstrated several layers of basement membrane. All the changes presented here are considered to be the result of a permanent interaction between aggressive forces of papilloma cells and the defence mechanism of stromal tissue. The results allow the conclusion that inverted papillomas of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are true neoplasms with very low malignancy.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. We were able to confirm the existence of two kinds of hyperplastic, immature cells i.e. endothelial cells and pericytes in the same tumor. Presence of crystalloid inclusions in the endothelial cells and absence of the Weibel-Palade bodies, as well as a deficiency in factor VIII-related antigen and no tissue fibrinolytic activity, suggested that the endothelial cells in these lesions were immature. Electron microscopic studies appear more decisive in the diagnosis of heterogenous cellular vascular tumors than light microscopy and if available should be used to aid in the final diagnosis. The authors propose that the term cellular haemangioma would be more appropriate in describing this vascular entity.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. The ultrastructural features of this rare and almost always benign tumor are compared with those reported in the literature and with findings in normal and neoplastic interstitial cells of the testis. Tubulovesicular hyperplasia and formation of whorl structures of the endoplasmatic reticulum together with the presence of exocytosis vesicles on the cell surface may be the morphological manifestation of endocrine activity of the tumor. The identity of ultrastructural and optical diffraction characteristics of the crystal inclusions in both cells (hilar and testicular interstitial) favours the assumption of an homology of both cells and their neoplasms.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. In a previous biochemical investigation we have shown that the tissue breakdown is preceded by the loss of proteoglycan. The present study describes the histological changes induced by retinoic acid. A decrease in the intensity of metachromatic staining with toluidine blue was noted already after 1 day and the discoloration was almost complete after 4 days correlating with the loss of proteoglycan. Especially in the perichondrium there was a rapid proliferation of fibroblasts and monocytes. Osteoclast-like cells were missing, but tumor nodules were eroded and split up by penetrating perichondrium. After 4 days of treatment larger necrotic areas were found, initially in the center of tumor nodules only. In other areas the majority of tumorous chondroblasts survived. Tumor nodules appeared partly mesenchyma-like with some fibroblast-like cells suggesting a dedifferentiation of chondroblasts by retinoic acid. we believe that tumor regression induced by retinoic acid involved proteoglycan degradation by chondroblasts themselves and chondroclast-like activity of monocytes and fibroblasts.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. The histological, histochemical and morphometrical findings are reported. These findings are compared with 25 cases of pleural metastatic carcinoma and 25 cases of reactive pleural lesions. Fourty-nine percent of malignant mesotheliomas produced hyaluronic acid, however all cases of pleural metastatic carcinomas failed to produce this substance. All cases of malignant mesothelioma were D-PAS negative while 15 cases of pleural metastatic carcinoma showed reactivity to D-PAS. All cases of malignant mesothelioma and 9 cases of metastases were CEA negative. To distinguish malignant mesothelioma from metastases it is advisable to perform the D-PAS staining first. If it is negative mesothelioma can be confirmed by showing hyaluronic acid activity. A positive CEA staining rules out mesothelioma. In our study it was shown that with these methods 18 of 37 mesotheliomas could be identified with certainty, and 22 of the 25 carcinoma metastases. Morphometrically the malignant mesotheliomas could not be distinguished from the metastases, however the reactive pleural lesions had smaller nuclei than the malignant cells with mean values below 30 mu2. In the malignant cases these values had a range from 36 to 101 mu2. In distinguishing between reactive pleural lesions and malignant mesothelioma the production of hyaluronic acid points to the malignant character of the lesion. Thus histochemistry and immunostaining are important in the distinction of malignant mesothelioma from metastases, while the value of morphometry lies mainly in the seperation of reactive lesions from malignant mesothelioma.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. Two methods are used, each based on a different mathematical model of the 3-dimensional distribution of lines in space. For these analyses specimens of extensor digitorum longus muscle from clinically affected C57BL/6Jdy2J/dy2J dystrophic mice, and from non-littermate controls, were used. The analyses were carried out on transverse and longitudinally orientated semithin sections of these muscles. Although the two methods employed are based on different mathematical models and yield results relevant to each particular model, it is clear that there is a more extensive capillary network present per unit volume of the dystrophic muscle than in control muscles. These findings are relevant to the theories which involve a vascular aetiology for muscular dystrophy. It is apparent that, in order to explore the structure of the capillary network more fully, there is a need for the development of more sophisticated stereological techniques for analysis of capillaries in skeletal muscle.
","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv.
