Nodular lipogranulomas develop from single fat cells, the fat of which is enclosed and phagocytized by lipophages. The small areas grow and become confluent into larger granulomas, which become scars by the formation of reticulin fibers. The rosette-like pattern, the primary degenerative alteration of the fat cells and the progression of the lesion all suggest insufficient blood supply. {"title":"Weight and shape of the human adrenal medulla in various age groups.","authors":"E Kreiner","doi":"10.1007/BF00430889","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00430889","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The weight and shape of the adrenal medulla were studied in 118 adrenal glands obtained at autopsies of 62 patients (38 males and 24 females) between 0 and 52 years of age. In adolescents 15 years and older and adults cases of sudden death only were entered in this study. The weight was calculated using morphometric measurements done on serial sections of the glands. In the new-born, the medulla accounts for less than 1% of the total volume of the adrenal gland. Though there is a rapid growth of the adrenal medulla after birth, the percentage of adrenal medullary volume at all age levels during childhood and adolescence is lower than in adults where it constitutes 9% of the total adrenal volume on the average. This corresponds to an average medullary weight of 0.43 g. In the new-born, the medulla consists of a thin plate made up of immature medulloblasts. Within a few months these are transformed into mature medullary cells; the shape of the medulla soon approaches that of the adult gland: an increase in thickness around the central vein and flat processes into the alae. With increasing age the cortico-medullary border becomes irregular and ragged. Especially in the vicinity of the central vein an intermingling of medullary and cortical cell complexes is found. An unequivocal diagnosis of genuine adrenal medullary hyperplasia can be established only by weighing the dissected medulla or by applying morphometric methods.</p>","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. {"title":"Chromoblastomycosis. Histologically it is characterized by the presence of fungus invariably in the yeast phase and by macrophages in large numbers. The morphology of fungus in both yeast and hyphal phases and its interaction with mononuclear phagocytes were examined using ultrastructural techniques. The major structural difference between the fungus in cutaneous tissue and that from a culture medium was a striking increase in cell wall thickness in the former. In the skin, the organisms were phagocytised by macrophages and enclosed in large membrane limited intracytoplasmic vacuoles. The thick, stratified, electron-dense fungal cell wall was observed in stages of alteration of varying severity. Most common was a granular modification of the outermost layers of the cell wall in contact with the vacuolar content. Fragmentation, splitting and rupture of this and deeper layers was also seen. Several ultrastructural features suggested that cell wall damage resulted from an active host cell digestion. The cell wall changes were in sharp contrast with the usual normal fungal cytoplasmic appearance. Only rare intracellular debris which we supposed to represent dead yeast cells were found. These findings suggested that the yeast responsible for chromoblastomycosis resisted fungicidal activities of cutaneous macrophages which possessed the ultrastructural features of stimulated phagocytes.</p>","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. The predominant cell type was the \"clear epithelial cell\", but transitional cells and degenerative forms (foamy cells) were also found. Standard TEM technique proved unsatisfactory (coarse silver granules, imprecise localization, artefacts). Exposure of the silver-treated aortas to photographic fixer markedly improved the image of the deposits leaving fine, stable, uniform \"residual granules\" about 100 A in diameter. Most of these granules were localized along the intercellular junctions; they also tended to pool in the basement membrane beneath each junction. This image suggests that the Ag+ ions pass through the junction, and react with its contents as well as with the basement membrane beyond it. A scheme is proposed to explain the reaction of Ag+ ions with anions and negatively charged radicals within the junction. It is concluded that the \"silver lines\" represent not only a histochemical effect, but also the visualization of a transendothelial electrolyte pathway.</p>","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. {"title":"Monoclonal antibodies to the human mammary gland. I. The distribution of the antigens detected by four of the antibodies has been examined in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded human tissues by light microscopic immunocytochemistry. The four antibodies stain lactating breast and normal resting breast. Two exclusively stain the luminal membranes of breast epithelial cells. A third antibody stains in addition the lateral membranes of duct epithelial cells. The fourth antibody stains both epithelial and myoepithelial cells. None of the antibodies is breast specific, nor do they stain every epithelial cell within the breast. Instead, each antibody reveals a complex and heterogeneous distribution of staining throughout the normal tissues. Within the breast, the staining by a given antibody is usually segmental and conforms to secretory units and their associated ducts. Similarly heterogeneous patterns of staining are also observed in the extramammary normal tissues. Despite the apparent morphological identity between breast epithelial cells when examined by conventional light microscopy, the hitherto unrecognised \"functional\" heterogeneity, which has been revealed by the monoclonal antibodies could have importance in understanding the biology of the normal breast and the pathology of breast cancer.</p>","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv. No therapy was performed. All three patients who died of prostatic carcinoma fitted into substage A3, all three patients living with metastases fitted into A1. The progression observed is significant when related to the brief interval of time, the size of the prostatic microcarcinoma and the histological grade (well differentiated tubular carcinomas in 5 out of 6 cases). In addition to previously reported ultrastructural features, such as abundant 10 nm cytoplasmic filaments, desmosome-like cell junctions and small cystic spaces surrounded by filopodia or microvilli of the tumor cells, we encountered 10 nm cytoplasmic filaments showing electron dense condensation with a concentrically oriented or whorled pattern and a finger-print-like arrangement and 5'-nucleotidase activity of tumor cell membrane. Among the control soft tissues, 5'-nucleotidase activity was found only in synovial and endothelial cells. Both tumor and synovial cells showed no activity of adenosine triphosphatase, while marked activity of the enzyme was found in endothelial cells. These results support the concept that epithelioid sarcoma is derived from mesenchymal cells undergoing differentiation toward synovial cells during neoplastic transformation.</p>","PeriodicalId":76799,"journal":{"name":"Virchows Archiv.
