The comparison shows that its text was not copied from either of these MSS and must be taken into account as an independent evidence of the textual history of the “Physique rime”. Special attention is paid to its prologue that sketches out the principles of humoral theory.","PeriodicalId":76565,"journal":{"name":"Sudhoffs Archiv","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47698261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first edition of the “Last Will” of Basilius Valentinus, printed in 1626 in Jena, included only two parts, although there were five parts announced in the preface. A new expanded edition was published in 1645 in Strasbourg containing the announced five parts. The Leipzig manuscript bears two owner’s marks dating from 1612 and 1620, which prove that this manuscript was written before the first print. In comparing these owner’s marks with the biographical data of the first editor of Basilius Valentinus’ works, Johann Tholde, and the supporter of these works, Joachim Tancke, it is possible, for the first time, to assume an influence of both people on the last published work of the Basilius Valentinus Alchemica Corpus based on historical evidence. In the manuscript written in 1612 or earlier the first three parts of the “Last Will” were already completed, but were not printed until the 1645 edition with two new chapters of unknown origin.","PeriodicalId":76565,"journal":{"name":"Sudhoffs Archiv","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42719420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seeks to clarify two particular instances in which a careful attention to word choice can ameliorate our understanding of Aristotle’s biology. In one, the confusion surrounding the connection of the great vein to the heart is dispelled; in the other, a new interpretation for the connection of the heart to the lungs is put forth.","PeriodicalId":76565,"journal":{"name":"Sudhoffs Archiv","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69180422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Aus Antyllos und Heliodoros“ Zum Problem der doppelten Autorenlemma-Angaben in den medizinischen Sammelwerken des Oreibasios und Aëtios von Amida","authors":"Mathias Witt","doi":"10.25162/sar-2019-0006","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.25162/sar-2019-0006","url":null,"abstract":"Numerous fragments of ancient Greek medical writings otherwise lost have been transmitted in the Byzantine medical compendia by Oribasius (4th cent. AD), Aetius (6th cent. AD) and Paul of Aegina (7th cent. AD). Sometimes, in the compendia by Oribasius and Aetius one single chapter heading does not only indicate one, but two sources, using formulae like “from Antyllus and Heliodorus”. As these double quotations have been misunderstood in the past, this paper attempts to examine their exact meaning by considering all available data, e. g. scholia with author indications (the so-called R2 scholia in Oribasius), parallel Arabic versions of Greek texts and stylistic criteria. The result attained by this process is that in the Greek medical compendia double quotation formulae always indicate that the following chapter is a cento from different passages of the authors mentioned. This does not mean that the same text occurs in both authors or that there is a textual dependency between them, as it has been claimed in the past. Since, in general, changes of authors in such compound passages are either not completely marked by scholia or are not indicated at all, they can only be traced by means of a stylistic analysis and/or parallel (e. g. Arabic) versions of the text in question. The different approaches of identification are comprehensively discussed in the present paper. A comparison between parallel passages in Oribasius’ Medical Collections, the Eclogae and Aetius suggests that the R2scholia to Oribasius’ Medical Collections must have been written prior to Aetius’ lifetime (first half of the 6th century AD).","PeriodicalId":76565,"journal":{"name":"Sudhoffs Archiv","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69180441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From about 1508 he dealt more closely with the theoretical prerequisites of reflection. In his Codex Arundel and on numerous sheets of the Codex Atlanticus we find more than 200 designs belonging to the subject. Afterwards (1513–15), in the service of Giuliano de’ Medici, he planned the process-steps for the production of large concave mirrors. He set great expectations on this technology (ms. G). In this stage he complains about lack of support by two German craftsmen and encrypts his notes in cipher. Several times he remembers the problems of soldering, which his teacher Verocchio had met while soldering the spherical segments on the lantern of Florence cathedral. Numerous are the drawings of precise grinding and polishing machines for the production of mirrors. Leonardo finds a solution to avoid shading if the receptor of the solar rays obstructed the front of a mirror. Burning mirrors should heat fishponds or dyeing tubs, and they would save fire-wood during lime-burning. In the service of Giuliano, commander-in-chief of the papal army, Leonardo may well have trusted in the legend of Archimedes destructing Roman ships by burning mirrors.","PeriodicalId":76565,"journal":{"name":"Sudhoffs Archiv","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69180452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As it will be further illustrated in the subsequent contributions to the special issue, interconnections between historical actors, such as communication, joint membership in organizations, or teacher-pupil relations can be mapped easily and perceived more clearly with the help of historical network analyses. Processes of selection, transfer and reception can be studied in their historical micro-, meso- or macro-dimensions. Chances and risks of this research method are discussed and a bibliography of the field is offered.","PeriodicalId":76565,"journal":{"name":"Sudhoffs Archiv","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69212951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By making use of the historical network analysis, approx. 400 scientists from all over the world mainly working in this field at this time could be identified and their work be evaluated. As a result, a “network star”, the German astronomer and geodesist Carl Theodor Albrecht, was figured out. More than many of his colleagues, he dominantly drove and scientifically influenced the development of a global network of measuring stations that finally made possible a continuous recording of the earth rotation for the first time. Furthermore, the interconnectedness of individual actors around the “network star” Albrecht is visualized by different network graphs using engineering software.","PeriodicalId":76565,"journal":{"name":"Sudhoffs Archiv","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69213383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
